Google rolls out Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 update

Google released the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 update for eligible Pixel smartphones on May 20, 2025. This update is part of Google’s Quarterly Platform Releases (QPRs), which bring regular fixes, new features, and security improvements to Pixel devices.

What is Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1?

Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 (build BP31.250502.008) is the first quarterly update following the original Android 16 release. It includes bug fixes, performance enhancements, new platform features, and the security patch for May 2025. These updates are sent to Pixel phones through Feature Drops and are also available in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

Key Details

  • Release Date: May 20, 2025
  • Build Number: BP31.250502.008
  • Supported Architectures: x86 (64-bit), ARM (v8-A)
  • Security Patch Level: May 2025
  • Google Play Services Version: 25.13.33
  • API Changes: From API 35 to API 36 (includes Baklava Beta 2 to API 36)

This update does not introduce any app-breaking API changes but offers developers new builds to test how upcoming features might affect their apps. Unlike earlier Android developer previews, these beta builds are stable enough for everyday use.

The update also brings some of the recent Material 3 Expressive design changes. Visual updates affect notifications, quick settings, the lock screen, and the launcher for a fresher user experience.

Availability

The update is available over-the-air for users who enroll with the following Pixel devices:

  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9a
  • Pixel Tablet series

If your device was already part of the Android 16 Beta program and you have not opted out, you will get the QPR1 Beta 1 update automatically.

Notes for Beta Users

Users who wish to move to the stable Android 16 version can opt out of the beta without data loss — but only if QPR1 Beta 1 hasn’t been installed. Once the update is applied, opting out will wipe all data as part of the downgrade process. To avoid this, Google advised skipping the beta and waiting for the public release.

Google recommends using the Android Beta Feedback app included in beta builds to report any user-facing bugs during this testing phase.
