Facebook withdraws support for Blackberry 10 and BBOS

Facebook has apparently decided to pull the plug on support for Blackberry 10 and BBOS. This move follows, the company’s decision to stop Whatsapp for the platform.

Facebook has decided to discontinue essential APIs for Blackberry by the end of 2016 and as a result, will render the existing app useless. Blackberry has released an update for the official Blackberry Facebook app that replaces the native app with a simpler web interface. This update will become mandatory by March 31st.

The move will render a lot of the functions of Facebook unavailable for users. Users will no longer get messages, notifications, comments etc pushed to their phone. They also won’t be able to integrate Facebook contacts with Blackberry contacts.

Blackberry are also asking users to let their voices be heard on social media using the hashtag #ILoveBB10Apps in the hope that a public opinion would change their minds and make them continue support for a while longer at least. However, considering that the platform is slowly, dying, we aren’t sure just how helpful it would be.
