While the whole mobile industry was taken surprise when the microSIM card made it's way onto the Apple iPad and the iPhone 4. Fast forward 2011 , we have the world's largest handset maker going with a microSIM slot in it's latest smartphones including the Nokia ,N9, Lumia 800 and Lumia 710. Motorola used a similar SIM card slot in the DROID RAZR. Now a German company Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has come up with the World's first Nano SIM card which is significantly smaller than even a microSIM card. The main reason handset makers go with a microSIM card is to reduce the thickness of the device. With a Nano SIM card , they are only going to get even more thinner rather anorexic !
The nano SIM card measures only 12mmx9mm compared to a microSIM which measures 15mmx12mm making it 30% smaller. In comparison with normal full size SIM cards , its 60% smaller. The folks behind this crazy idea have not just reduced the size but also managed to shave away a few micrometres of the thickness. Its 15% thinner.
The company will be showcasing the nano-SIM at the CARTES & IDentification 2011 trade show from November 15 to 17.If ...

Lufthansa will be the first airline to offer in-flight internet access on intercontinental routes. The service will be offered under the banner FlyNet in partnership with Panasonic Avionics. FlyNet will be initially available only on select North Atlantic routes but they plan to offer it on the airline's entire intercontinental network by end of 2011.All you need is a WiFi enabled device be it a laptop , iPad , iPhone , iPod , Blackberry or any Smartphone and you can browse the web in the middle of a boring and tiring flight.
The service is expected to offer Download speeds upto 5 Mbps and upload speeds upto 1Mbps . GSM services such as SMS and GPRS will be available soon and you can send text messages or your phone's data plan inside the flight.
This is how the service works according to an illustration on the company's website.
The service will be initially available on Airbus A330 Aircrafts and will be soon available on the Boeing 747 and Airbus 340. And the best part is that the service is not restricted to business class but available to all passengers who are willing to pay.The price would be around 11 euros for 1 hr access ...

Uninor has finally launched GPRS Services on Prepaid in 8 circles UP (West), UP (East), Bihar, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The plans certainly look attractive. No unlimited plans but you can get 60MB for just Rs.9 while Rs.90 will get you 3GB of usage of 30 days. Uninor is highlighting the fact that their network is Uncongested but they certainly need to work on improving their network coverage as signal strength is a issue with Uninor from my personal experience
The limited period free trial offer for internet browsing will be available till May 6. Subsequently, data services will be available through two products – Data 9 priced at Rs. 9 that’s valid for 3 days and allows free browsing upto 60MB and Data 90 priced at Rs. 90 that’s valid for 30 days with 3GB of free browsing. For both plans, usage beyond free data will be charged at 10p per 10kb. Both plans also allow customers free access to popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, orkut, indyarocks, hi5, tagged and Linked-In.

Vodafone users in Kolkata can now get Unlimited GPRS with new bonus cards for as low as Rs.21 for 2 days. Did you ever want to try Mobile Internet and were afraid of Huge bills. If you happen to be in West Bengal's Capital you can definitely try now as Vodafone Essar has launched two new Bonus Cards for its customers in Kolkata. These Bonus Cards come in two denominations of Rs.21 and R.251 and offer unlimited mobile Internet browsing for prepaid customers.
You can recharge with Rs.21 and get unlimited GPRS for 2 days. The Rs.251 Bonus Card give you 30 days of Unlimited browsing.
You can also watch video clips for free and check email on your mobile, access social networking sites - Orkut , Facebook etc. These Data Bonus Cards are available at all Vodafone Stores, Mini stores and retailers across Kolkata.
I think this is great move by Vodafone as most users dont want to pay a fat monthly bill. But sadly this is available only in one city now. Hope it's available all over India soon.
But with plans like these I'm sure speeds will be incredibly slow as I have personally tried a 2 day data pack on Vodafone. But ...

The Chinese Telecom and Network solutions company has managed to achieve record speeds of 564 Kb/s over 2G Networks
In a recent trial conducted for EDGE / Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution Huawei managed to clock 564 Kb/s which is roughly 2 times the current speeds possible over EDGE.
It's an attempt to bring 3G experience over 2G networks which can bring services like Video Streaming etc.
He Gang, president of GSM/UMTS product line for Huawei commented: "This milestone demonstrates Huawei' s continued commitment towards driving GSM evolution, the world' s most widely deployed technical standard with the largest mobile subscriber base. Huawei' s advanced EDGE+ technology enhances flexibility for operators building their 3G networks and provides a seamless high-speed data service experience."
Huawei is calling this technology EDGE+ or we call it EDGE on Steroids !
If such a solution is implemented by Operators in India where we barely get 100Kb/s even in the middle of the night it would be more than welcome. With large scale 3G deployment in India still a distant dream possibilities like the above are a ray of hope .

We are sad to see this move from the Operator as many users got a new connection just for this offer. But if you managed to get hold of an unlimited plan in the really short duration, you must be lucky.
Open question to Docomo – Why did you even release such a plan if it was going to be short term offer and Why was the information that is a limited duration pack not mentioned ?
Thanks for the Tip Shivranjan

I was impressed with the page loading speeds and ability to see video streaming within the browser
Also they have a feature called Smart Fit which lets you the webpage fit inside your screen.
You can zoom in on parts of the page .
The home page and search page have tabs on them and it looks uber cool
I can search for something in google and yahoo, images ,videos and maps .
Video
A windows mobile version is already out there and a symbian version is coming out soon .. cant wait to try tht too..
Hope to get somemore photos if time permits
chk out skyfire
and thanks to Mike
