RIM launched three new handsets in India recently. We got to spend some time with the three and have put down some thoughts. The first in the line is the new Curve 9350 , a CDMA based device.
The smartphone has cut weight and is smaller in size than its predecessors resulting in an extremely pocketable device. The display resolution is HVGA which is a major step up from previous Curve models. The phone runs the new BB OS 7 on a 800 Mhz processor.
The gently curved shape and use of high quality plastics in the Curve 9350 definitely make it a looker. Despite weighing just 99g , the phone does not feel flimsy. The combination of shiny plastic on the battery cover with the matte body make for a rather elegant device.
It might not be the thinnest device in the market right now but at 11mm , it is certainly very easy to grab hold off. Overall nothing to complain about in the dimensions aspect.
The camera on the Blackberry 9360 is a 5MP unit capable of capturing VGA video. A bit of a bummer on that front as we expected it to capture 720p video like every other new smartphone ...

Tata Teleservices which is the telecom unit of the Tata Group will merge both the CDMA and GSM divisions. It is also said to cut jobs by the end of this year based on non-performance, and the CDMA employees will be the one to be affected the most.
This will combine all the CDMA and GSM services in all the circles under 4 four regions that include West & Upper North, East & UP, South and Delhi & Rajasthan. These 4 regions will have 15 mobility business units by combining the circles.
The CDMA services are provided under Tata Indicom and the GSM services are provided by both Tata Indicom and Tata Docomo. Tata Indicom has 93 million subscribers in India with less than 50% of active GSM and CDMA connections.
This company reported a net loss of Rs.119.32 crore in Q2 2011 recently, and this move is to improved the cost efficiency.

As it’s a CDMA device, we were assuming that it will hit either Sprint or Verizon, and we first saw it with Verizon Wireless branding but it looks like the device is now going to hit US Cellular, because they officially announced it. US Cellular is the seventh largest US network, and they are offering several low-end and other mid-range phones. HTC Merge actually looks like a CDMA version of T-Mobile G2, there is a little difference in design and the main difference is that it also features Sense UI. When we first heard about this device last year, the specs felt amazing but now, we are living in the world where dual-core phones are the next thing. Merge comes with Android 2.2, 3.8 inch display, side-sliding QWERTY keyboard, an 800MHz Scorpion processor, a 5 MP camera with flash and a lot of other stuff. If you want to buy one from US Cellular, then you will be able to get it for $149.99 with a 2-yr contact and $100 rebate. ...

Users either resorted to just using a feature phone or paying up a fortune for rather unimpressive smartphones. Fast forward to 2011 and we finally have an option available where we can enjoy the benefits of CDMA networks , the power of the Android platform without selling an arm and a leg!
Samsung recently announced a pair of Android powered budget smartphones called the Samsung Galaxy Pop. What was the difference between them ? Well on e of them runs on CDMA networks while the other on regular GSM. Read on as we review the CDMA variant of the Samsung Galaxy Pop before its wide spread availability.
Hardware
The Samsung Galaxy Pop looks like every other Samsung phone. The front is dominated by a largish screen (for its class) which measures 3.1". Below it are two hardware buttons for calls and one large central menu button. The screen itself is capacitive in nature and gestures are interpreted easily. The touch experience was rather excellent and all touch inputs very immediately detected. Coming from the masses of resistive touchscreen enabled Nokia devices, this definitely feels like a ...

Rumors hint about Sprint planning to launch three new devices: Nexus S 4G, HTC EVO 3D and EVO View, at the CTIA event which is going to be held at the end of March. Sources say that Sprint is getting ready to kick-off at the event with the launch of these new 4G devices.
The first one is the Nexus S 4G from Samsung. As the name suggests, this might be the next version of the Nexus S, equipped with 4G radios. So the new version of Nexus S can be expected with some WiMAX and CDMA capabilities.
The next device, the HTC EVO 3D, is another 3D phone which might be launched to keep up with the latest trend of 3D capable devices and especially to take on the LG Optimus 3D. So this phone might be the successor of HTC EVO 4G combined with 3D capabilities.
The last device is the HTC EVO View, a CDMA version of the Flyer tablet which was introduced at MWC 2011.
So get ready to experience the 4G power and do watch this space for more updates.

Sprint customers were happy that they are getting it, but not anymore, because Microsoft Senior Product Manager Greg Sullivan told CNET that:
“For the worldwide market, the vast majority of phones are GSM phones, so we focused on GSM first and then plan to deliver an update that will have great CDMA support in the first half of 2011. That’s device availability in the first half and we’re very confident of that. That’s probably a conservative estimate.”
So it means no sign of WP7 powered CDMA device this year. As Verizon said that they will carry it next year, so hopefully Sprint will be carrying it too. But don't worry Verizon and Sprint folks, you guys have Androids, a lot of them... and more coming !

Recently we saw the first screenshot of the Verizon 4G LTE sim card, and when we say it, we start thinking that a new Verizon branded device is in progress, and I think Verizon has chosen HTC for it.
Folks over at AndroidGuys got their hands on a phone which is manufactured by HTC, and got a Verizon branding on it. And the interesting thing is that its a world phone, which means that it will run on both CDMA and GSM.AndroidGuys is saying that Verizon will be launching this smartphone in early 2011. Still it's not confirm that is this the first Verizon 4G LTE device, but if it is a world phone as AndroidGuys said, then may be it is.
The phone features a 4" Inch screen, with a four row physical QWERTY keyboard, and it is probably running on a 1.2 GHz processor. And if the device is coming out in 2o11, then it will be running Android 2.2 for sure, or may be Android 2.3.
In the image above, you can see that the phone is compared with the EVO 4G, and it's almost equal to EVO 4G in size. Folks stay tuned with us, we'll hear some ...

The beauty of having a lot of spectrum is we have a lot of flexibility." That means that Sprint is also considering on LTE, not only on 4G (WiMax). There is no doubt in it that LTE is more faster than WiMax. Sprint WiMax partner, Clearwire also said that LTE is a possibility in the future. The competitors of Sprint, known as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are working on LTE Technology too. Dan Hesse also said that a merge with T-Mobile was "logical" if both companies build out LTE networks, but he didn't gave any further information on it, may be both companies are talking to each other behind the scenes. Back in 2008, Sprint tried to merge with T-Mobile, but they rejected it because both companies are on running on different network (Sprint is CDMA and T-Mobile is GSM). And now the rumors are popping out again, I am sure that if T-Mobile and Sprint merge, ...

FCC has recently passed a new Nokia phone (RM-526). The phones picture/sketch got leaked and a friend of mine has made a picture in which he took the leaked picture and created a sketch to show us what the phone looks like. The phone is rumoured to be a CDMA phone for Verizion in America.
The phone has a unique square design with swivel form factor and with the hinge at the top corner. The phone is also expected t be in the upcoming Transformers 2 movie.
Nothing more on this handset is known and if anything comes up, we will let you know.

It's a CDMA handset (ie no SIM card) and features the full touchscreen glass-flip design we told you about earlier. It'll retail around the 150$. Even though this handset won't make it outside of Verizon, it's a sign that Motorola are working on touchscreen handsets, and the ZN4 might be the first result of these efforts. We'll keep an eye on the ZN4 to see how the OS actually performs, in order to predict whether their following touchscreen handsets will be worthwhile or not.

Now Forbes is telling us that Huawei Technologies of China has won a 500 million USD contract from Reliance India for GSM Network hardware and installation and the contract spans 3 years. Airtel and Vodafone are battling it out already in the GSM space and State owned operators are facing losses. Will entry of Reliance make things worse for them ?
Regarding the CDMA scene in India , Reliance and Tata Indicom are the sole players and its a different ball game altogether.
We need to see what Reliance does with its GSM spectrum. It has now got license to operate in 14 circles after it got a nod for its fresh GSM spectrum

I am a Reliance user and have been meaning to upgrade my handset for a very long time. I have a Nokia 6325 which is a neat handset, but lets face it, in the world of 3-5 megapixel cameras, MicroSD memory card options, Bluetooth, GPRS, GSM etc, this handset is antiquated.
But Reliance has few upgrade options that along with features, look super chic too. I don’t want a Black Berry, LG Chocolate hasn’t enough features, and the Nokia handsets by Reliance are just not good looking enough.
And then I come across this news item:
The latest LG Chocolate Phone KW838 can handle both CDMA and GSM cell phone signals. This handset is being marketed in China and it will come equipped with a pair of SIM card slots: one for a CDMA provider and the other for a GSM provider. You can have simultaneous access to two phone numbers; press the G button for GSM and the C button for CDMA. Rounding out the specs for this China-bound phone are a 3 megapixel camera, 3-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, and microSD expansion.
And I think, isn’t that just amazing?? The phone looks pretty good too! Why can’t our service providers get smarter handsets ...

Reliance seems to be singing the Blogging song with their latest Reliance Mobile Blog Ad on TV screens across India.
Reliance Mobile Blog is the latest addition to the features of their mobile offerings. The classical song which plays is " You got the whole world in your hands ". With mobile penetration sky rocketing in India this new feature seems to be mainly targetted at Youth. The AD shows a pretty young girl who encourages users to share your dairy on reliance mobile world. The advert seems impressive and well taken. It seems like the AD is taken in Singapore. I checked out the Official Site and found that users are uploading mainly images and videos. So this might well be termed as Multimedia Mobile Blogging . But my worry is that since such a service is data intensive, how much time will it take for me to upload an image/video etc. I badly want to get my hands on a reliance phone and try out this service.

By mid-2008, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, BSNL, will offer CDMA services to mobile users across the country.
The application rendered by BSNL for a full-fledged CDMA mobility license has been approved. Since BSNL is State-owned, it was exempted from shelling out Rs 1,651-crores entry fee, performance bank guarantee fee etc for the CDMA license.
“The initial investment for this project will be approximately $500 million,” said BSNL CMD, Kuldeep Goyal.
BSNL has 70 million customers nation-wide and intends to expand the numbers with the introduction of CDMA services. They claim that they will be able to take 20% of the market share under their fold in one year. Do Reliance and TATA Indicom have something to mull over?
Even while most CDMA users swear by the reliability of our connections, we feel short changed as far as choice of handsets goes. We can only hope that BSNL can redeem us and in the process, maybe, guarantee switch-over customers as well.
