Mark Gurman of Bloomberg in his most recent article reports that Apple will use the name “xrOS” for the operating system that will power its upcoming mixed reality AR/VR headset instead of “RealityOS” or “rOS,” which was the original plan for the platform. Qualcomm announced the worlds first 5G-supported extended reality (XR) platform called the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform. It boasts multiple new technologies that Qualcomm claims to give the newer platform 2x the CPU and GPU performance, 4x more video bandwidth, 6x higher resolution and 11x AI improvement over the precious XR platform.
As per the recent report from IDC, the shipments of virtual reality (VR) headsets were down 33.7% year over year in the second quarter of 2018. However, the IDC expects this to be a temporary setback, since the arrival of new products like Oculus Go and HTC Vive Pro, and new brands will have a positive outlook for the quarters ahead. Xiaomi and Oculus at the CES 2018 announced that they are working on two standalone VR headsets – Oculus Go and Xiaomi Mi VR Standalone that will be built by Xiaomi and will be powered the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 Mobile VR Platform. These don’t require cable, external sensors, or a mobile phone.

HTC at the ChinaJoy 2017 announced its first Vive Standalone VR headset for the China market. It will be a premium headset and promises outstanding standalone VR experience and doesn’t require PC to use it, unlike the HTC VIVE headset that was launched recently.
