While the COVID-19 pandemic caused most consumer electronics markets to decline in 2020, the worldwide tablet shipment went the opposite way and recorded strong growth of 18.6% YoY in Q2 2020. A total of 38.6 million units were shipped and Apple maintained its top position, followed by Samsung, Huawei, Amazon and Lenovo.
HUAWEI’s HONOR brand today announced new ViewPad 6 and ViewPad X6 models. The ViewPad 6 packs a 10.1-inch FHD screen with 80.6% screen-to-body ratio, while the ViewPad X6 comes with a 9.7-inch HD screen with 75% screen-to-body ratio. HUAWEI’s HONOR brand at its HONOR Smart Life event in China yesterday also introduced the HONOR ViewPad V6, the company’s first 5G tablet powered by Kirin 985 SoC. It has 10.4-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels (WUXGA+), runs Magic UI 3.1 based on Android 10, has support for Magic-Pencil stylus that supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. As the entire mobile devices experience a slow down in sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide tablet shipments have taken an extra hard hit as the International Data Corporation (IDC) has reported that shipments have reduced to 24.6 million units which calculates to a decline of 18.1% YoY. Interestingly, the Detachables market saw a growth of 56.8% YoY, thanks to the popularity of iPadOS tablets.

The tablet market continues to suffer as the global shipments in Q4 2019 dropped to 43.5 million units, marking a decline of 0.6% compared to Q4 last year. Apple continues to lead the market with its highly successful iPad series with Samsung, HUAWEI, Amazon.com and Lenovo taking the next 4 spots in global shipments and market share.
Samsung has announced Galaxy Tab S6 5G, which is the 5G version of the Galaxy Tab S6 that was introduced last year. It is powered by a Octa-Core Snapdragon 855 SoC with Qualcomm X50 5G modem. Other specifications are similar including a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED WQXGA screen, quad-stereo speakers tuned by AKG by HARMAN, in-display fingerprint scanner, 8-megapixel primary camera along with a 5-megapixel 123-degree ultra-wide camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. It features a 10.8-inch QHD+ (2560 x 1600 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display with 90% screen-to-body ratio with 4.9mm slim frame, is powered by an Octa-Core Kirin 990 SoC and runs on Android 10 with EMUI 10 on top. It has a 13-megapixel auto focus rear camera with PDAF and an 8MP in-screen front camera. It comes with Quad-channel Quad speakers, Huawei Histen sound support, are Harman Kardon audio certified.
After leaks, HUAWEI CEO Richard Yu has confirmed that the company will introduce the Mate Pad tablet series at an event in Shanghai, China on November 25th. Image of the MatePad Pro tablet that surfaced recently revealed a punch-hole screen, stylus support and a keyboard accessory. There could be normal and Pro versions of the tablet. LG has just announced its new G Pad 5 10.1-inch tablet in South Korea. It is the successor to LG G Pad 4 and the G Pad 5 10.1-inch comes in WiFi-only and an optional 4G LTE variant.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has reported that tablet shipments for Q3 2019 worldwide have seen growth with 37.6 million units shipped globally, resulting in a year-on-year growth of 1.9%. The top five companies that shipped tablets are Apple, Amazon.com, Samsung, Huawei and Lenovo.

Apple at its special event announced its seventh-generation iPad with a larger 10.2-inch Retina Display. It has support for the full-sized Smart Keyboard, Apple Pencil support, A10 Fusion chip, advanced cameras and sensors. It features an enclosure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum with the same strength, durability and finish as the aluminum in all Apple products. The LTE version has Gigabit-class LTE connectivity. It still has Touch ID below the display.
