Samsung has just signed a joint venture with Corning to to manufacture a new range of speciality glass substrates for its OLED equipped devices.
If the name Corning sounds familiar to you, its probably because you've heard of Gorilla glass. Gorilla glass is one of the strongest materials used for displays in smartphones.
The venture will be based in Korea and will combine Samsung's OLED expertise with Corning's Lotus Glass technology.
This would enable Samsung to widen the range of smartphones that will use their technology. It will also help it to compete with LG and other makers who provide displays to brands such as Apple.

Apple had just recently announced that it had managed to sell 37.04 million iPhones, 15.43 million iPads and 15.4 million iPods in Q1 2012. Now it has revealed plans to reward Apple employees following the record breaking quarter results.
During a session at Town Hall with employees, Apple CEO Tim Cook has just announced some new employee benefits. Employees of the company will be able to purchase Apple products at a discounted rate. Macs will receive a 500$ discount and iPads will receive a 250$ discount.
The privileges are expected to kick off by June 2012. However in order to enjoy the benefits, the employee must have worked at Apple for a minimum period of 90 days and the offer can be used only every three years so the employees might have to choose wisely. Also, the discount on Macs does not apply to the Mac Mini.

Microsoft has just made a correction to a statement they previously made. It seems that Windows Phone 7.5 does indeed lack support for NFC.
Last week, Will Coleman (Developer Evangelist and Product Manager at Microsoft UK) stated that Windows 7.5 does support NFC and that OEM manufacturers can enable it if required.
The statement has now been corrected by a Microsoft spokesperson who stated that Windows Phone 7.5 does not support NFC but Microsoft expects NFC enabled Windows devices to ship within the next year.
Microsoft currently holds around 14 NFC related patents and they have promised to bring support for NFC and more hardware choices to Windows Phone in 2012.

Football fans always seems to know best, or at least that's what I feel whenever I find myself in a company of one. And I am sure there are a couple of football fans here. Well, don't you ever wished you could control your own real life footballers? Sony Ericsson and Umbro thought they could. They teamed up together to create a live football game called the Kasabian Football Gaming Live.
Check out the video below where Tom from the pop band Kasabian and England striker Darren Bent battles it out via their very own footballer minions, from the comfort of their Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phones. I can only imagine a certain rich Russian oligarchs in London will be hoping to equip this on his team next.

In a new report published by Strategy Analytics, Samsung have snatched the top spot in the global smartphone market, shipping 27.8 million smartphones in the last quarter.
That's nearly 20 million more than they shipped just one year ago, with the company showing dramatic growth at the expense of its two biggest competitors, Apple and Nokia. The figure is good for a 23.8% share in the global market for the past quarter, compared with 14.6% for Apple and 14.4% for Nokia.
Apple may yet retake the top spot however, as these figures don't include the launch weekend of the iPhone 4S, which saw sales of over 4 million units in just three days. The new phone has revitalised Apple, even in the face of growing Android competition.
Nokia will also looking to fight back in the last quarter of the year, with its stable of Windows phones to soon be available. The Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, Nokia's first Windows phones, have been critically well received and should sell well. The company is also expected to boost its fortunes with the launch of its feature phone line Asha.
Samsung won't be resting on its laurels either, though. The company is expected to keep up the ...

Apple has rejected the settlement offer from Samsung. The offer would have allowed Samsung to sell their Galaxy Tab 10.1.
It would have also enabled a speedy court decision. Apple rejected the offer and claimed that Samsung has infringed numerous patents.
Apple attorney Steven Burley said "It is one we don't accept and there is no surprise. The main reason we are here is to prevent the launch and maintain the status quo."
Neither Samsung nor Apple are in a hurry to conclude the battle. Each will take their own time in preparing to bring down the other.

For quite a while it had been rumored that Sony Ericsson is getting ready to use the Windows Phone platform for its mobile phones.
However, in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg put rest to the rumors by stating that Windows Phone isn't as good as the Android platform which they're already using.
Bert Nordberg - "At this point I wouldn’t feel comfortable investing in a platform that isn’t as good as the one that we currently use. Therefore we have remained with Android, but I am quite curious about Windows Phone."
In October 2010, Nordberg had said that Sony Ericsson would look to use Windows Phone for their devices in 2011 and the appearance of a few Sony Ericsson Windows Phone prototypes only ignited the rumors.
He said that 70% of Sony Ericsson sales are from smartphones and their goal is to become solely a smartphone company by mid-2012. He mentioned that they should have taken Apple more seriously and that they no longer are competing with Nokia since theyre mainly concentrating with the smartphone market.

The battle between Nokia and Apple is well known. In the end Apple was forced to pay licensing fees to Nokia. Now another lawsuit has been filed by InterDigital against Nokia, ZTE and Huawei.
InterDigital states that the three companies are using unfair trade practices and importing 3G devices like mobile, hotspots, tablets and computers into USA.
These devices infringe on the patents held by InterDigital. No details regarding which patents were infringed have been given. but we should expect to see a lot of the battle in the news considering the kind of companies involved.

Nokia is ready to invest heavily in the promotion of their upcoming Windows 7 phones. They are reportedly spending a sum of 127 Million US Dollars (80 Million GBP).
A Nokia spokesperson however stated that it's not their policy to comment on campaigns for unannounced products. The campaign is set to start in October and will be aimed at re-branding Nokia as a Windows 7 phone company instead of Symbian or MeeGo.
October is also the month when Nokia World 2011 is scheduled to take place and it is expected that Nokia will showcase it's first Windows Phone there including the Nokia Sea Ray.

Apple has just filed a second patent infringement complaint against HTC. The first complaint was issued for infringement of 20 patents.. Apple has asked to block the import of "personal electronic devices" manufactured by HTC.
The complaint was filed on July 8th at the International Trade Commission. Apple has been issuing complaints against companies using Android OS.
A judge is expected to give a judgement by August 5th. The court will be able to block imports if they find that that the patents have been infringed.
HTC hasn't seen the details of the complaint and no comments have been made yet. HTC's own complaint against Apple is pending and a result is expected by September 16th.

Microsoft has demanded Samsung to pay 15 US$ for every Android phone that Samsung sells.
Although, there has been no comment from Samsung yet, they might try to lower the rate to 10 US $ in return for deepening the alliance with Microsoft for their Windows Phone 7 OS.
During April last year, Microsoft had come to agreements with HTC to receive royalty for the Android handsets that they sold.
Android is gaining popularity and this is just one of the measures Microsoft is undertaking to reduce the sales and encourage manufacturers to adopt Windows 7. Together with Nokia they are looking to challenge both Apple and Google.
Samsung have managed to sell 19 million smartphones in the April-June quarter and most of them are Android devices. Samsung are also on the verge of overthrowing Nokia from their top position after their reign of 10 years. Their flagship model, the Galaxy S II itself accounts for 3 million out of the 19 million handsets sold.

Samsung and Apple have been in a legal battle for quite sometime now. Samsung had demanded to see prototypes of the Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3.
Apple in return filed a suit claiming they need to see the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G, and Droid Charge.
Samsung argued that taking a look at Apple's upcoming devices would be relevant to the legal ruling.
Finally the ruling was made in Apple's favour especially since Apple are more tight lipped regarding their upcoming products as compared to Samsung which gave out 5,000 units of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the public.
But the court is still leaving Samsung the opporunity to argue the case.

Jens Wilkes, the product manager of Nokia has stated that the N9 is the fastest image capturing phone on the market. Nokia claims the N9 to have an image capture time of 2.6 seconds.
That is the time the phone takes to turn on the camera, viewfinder to get ready, focus on the subject and capture the image.
The graph below shows the comparison between the N9 capture time and various other phones. The iPhone is the closest competitor with its quick 3 second capture time. The Galaxy S II comes in third place.
The Windows phones seem to be slower especially the HD 7 which takes 8.3 seconds to capture an image. Lets hope that Nokia can work the same N9 magic on their WP7 phones as well.

Nokia's move of switching over to Windows Phone 7 as it's main platform caused quite a stir. People began questioning the support for Symbian devices. But there is good news for the users of Symbian devices.
Stephen Elop (CEO of Nokia) stated in a video interview today that Nokia would continue supporting and updating Symbian till at least 2016. He said that although Nokia are in the transition period of moving from Symbian to Windows, the support for Symbian will continue.
This might be a good move as it allows Nokia users who are hesitant to move into Windows enough time to take a proper decision. Stephen Elop also showed the Nokia ORO which he uses as his personal smartphone.

Tim Cook, Apple's COO and acting CEO had visited South Korea last week and reports state that, he went to discuss the possibility of using Samsung's AMOLED screens for the upcoming iPad 3.
The Apple iPad 3 as we mentioned earlier might be more interesting than the iPad 2. It seems that Apple have planned to launch the iPad 3 towards the end of 2011 and that Samsung's AMOLED technology might be used in it.
Earlier reports suggested that the production capacity of the AMOLED units wasn't acceptable to Apple since Samsung had a tough time supplying screens for their own phones.
The news has not yet been confirmed and as of now it is just a rumour since a Samsung Mobile Display spokesperson said that he has not heard of such discussions taking place. The rumour suggests that Apple offered Samsung an advance for the AMOLED units.
The offer comes at a time when the two companies are engaged in a legal dispute which again causes us to doubt the legibility. Lets wait and see what happens eventually.

Sony seems to be facing a lot of problems with hackers these days. After the breach in the PSN (Playstation Network), now the Sony Ericsson Canadian Store has become the latest in the series of attacks from hackers.
The personal information of around 2000 consumers have been stolen from the Canadian store The information that was stolen includes emails, password and phone numbers.
The details of around 8500 users were also stolen from the Sony Music Entertainment website in Greece. Apart from this, the Music Entertainment site in Indonesia and the Sony site in Thailand have also been hacked although no information has been leaked.
All four sites have been temporarily shut down.
