LG has announced the GW990 smartphone. This is a truly amazing smartphone. It has a cool form factor and runs Moblin
It's features include:
4.8" Touchscreen display with 1020*480 resolution
5 Megapixel Camera with Autofocus, LED Flash and HD Video
GPS with A-GPS Support, 3D Gaming
16 GB Internal Memory, micro-SD Card Slot
Intel Atom 45nm Processor (Unknown Speed)
	1850 mAh Battery, 512MB RAM
Linux Moblin OS with LG S-Class UI
7.2 MBPs HSDPA, 5.6 MBPs HSUPA
The handset is quite a handful and yet it is said to consume 10 times lesser energy than previous Intel Atom powered devices
One thing not sure is whether applications for other Linux based platforms such as Maemo will work on the GW990.
The device is expected to come out sometime during the 2nd half of 2010.

Qt is truly cross platform as you can see in the video below that the UI is almost the same on a Nokia N900 (Maemo) , Nokia 5800 (Symbian) and a Windows mobile phone.

My friend, Ranesh Kumar considered picking up a new Nokia handset before he heard about the new Motorola Droid. Just last week, he bought two Motorola Droids from Verizon, one for himself and one for his fiancée.
Ranesh was a Nokia fan for a long time and had owned few Nokia’s including an E70. But he made the transition to Verizon for a decent deal on a Voyager two years ago (because he likes qwerty keyboards and that was the only one he liked at the time). Ranesh couldn't wait for a decent Nokia device to hit the market he liked, so he took the plunge. When he tested out the N97, he was terribly disappointed with the overall OS and decided to hold out for the Christmas season of this year to see what was around the corner and settled on the Motorola Droid running the Android 2.0 OS.
Nokia is readying the release of their flagship handset, the N900. Unfortunately, Nokia posted it’s first loss in 10 years.(We know Nokia Siemens Networks was to blame.) The problem wasn't lack of phones worldwide but the Chinese “bandit” or known as “shanzhai” manufacturers eating away at Nokia’s bottom line. Several of these ...

Nokia has officially announced the Qt port to Maemo5 Linux and shows it off on Video using the eagerly awaited Nokia N900 .Qt comes to Nokia from the acquisition of Norwegian company Trolltech back in 2008 and it was formerly referred to as Qtopia.Enjoy the video after the jump.
Qt is a UI Application framework and follows the wrote once and run anywhere approach. Developers can target Nokia N-series devices including the N900,Symbian, Windows Mobile and embedded Linux. Sounds cool isn't it.Maemo mobile applications cam also be ported to the desktop on Windows, Mac and Linux. Its a great move by Nokia it demonstrates the power of Linux and the greatness of a Community driven project. The port has been released as a initial Technology Preview and the final version will be out in Q1 2010. In the current mobile ecosystem a certain OS from a specific vendor can't dominate the market as consumers want variety. Android is going to be pretty big by 2012 according to analysts.

These are the pictures of a LIMO powered Samsung phone under the Vodafone network. This phone has been leaked ahead of the Vodafone release schedule. Rumours say that this might be the Samsung Riedel i8305.
The handset is powered by LIMO which is Vodafone's own Linux variant. The handset has a great brushed metal finish which houses an OLED Touchscreen. The touchscreen size and design looks similar to the Samsung i8910 OMNIA HD. It may even turn out to be a region specific OMNIA HD variant. The handset appears to be quite slim and is rumoured to sport an 8 Megapixel camera.
Further details are not known. Announcement should be on 24th September if sources are right.

Till now, Nokia was the only active company which ‘cultivates’ a league of bloggers, but it is not so. Samsung seems to have clearly declared ‘war’ on all fronts. Fonearena was also invited to the event at T.G.I.F, Vasant Kunj in Delhi. Since it was the first that Samsung was doing, we just had to go.
Going there seemed worthwhile too, as we got meet a whole lot of other bloggers and also the Samsung team of Ankur and Sarfaraz, both important men within the scheme of things at Samsung.
A demo of the Samsung Jet, aka the S8003 was given by Sarfaraz, Product Manager,India at Samsung. He said that Samsung wanted to create a 'touch' leadership globally. So whenever someone thought of a touch phone, Samsung would be the first that would spring to mind. There was also a contest for us bloggers, yes even we have contests! where the lucky winner to tweet the answers stood to win a brand new Jet.
The event was planned very nicely and was more of a fun session than a presentation or a launch.
Onward now to the Jet, which we will be ...

The N900 codenamed Rover aka RX-51 seems to be getting a lot of attention due to the platform on which the phone is built - Maemo Linux. We have seen tons of pics of the N900 and package. Now a site named BeGeek has got it hands on the first official press pic of the phone which is most likely to be announced at Nokia World 2009
We are certainly excited about this device - not because its linux but this device is a prelude to a new series of phones built on a platform other than Symbian and yet has beefy specs. We are planning to bring you a first hand account of this device live from Nokia World 2009 . Got any questions ?

Well here is something good for you Linux fans out there. Nokia recently leaked their Nokia N900/RX-51 Rover which runs on the Maemo (Linux) Platform.
It now seems that Samsung are also wanting to try out Linux on their phones and here's the end result. The Samsung i8320 is a Linux Based smart-phone which is in the final stages of production. The phone supports touch pad.
The phone appears to be a full-touch screen phone devoid of any hardware keypad. But the sketch shows things which look like hinges at the top of the phone. So it could be a flip phone too. But we cant say anything for sure. No other features are known. But the handset should be announced pretty soon.
We will keep you up to date on the information of the handset.

Recent acquisition of Symbian has created quite a stir in the ever increasing market of Mobile Operating Systems. Symbian OS accounts for 60 percent of the converged mobile device segment, but has been loosing share lately. This has been largely to Windows Mobile and Linux.
Symbian has largely been controlled by Nokia. And it seems pretty odd, other phone manufacturer's paying large sum of money going into the hands of a competitor. But this will all change with the Symbian foundation. How much? Only time will tell.
Google is about to unleash linux-based Android pretty soon on Motorola handsets. So this means putting additional pressure on Windows Mobile, which charges heavy on licensing fees.
Samsung has already introduced Windows Mobile, while Sony Ericcson will soon be releasing Xperia. But how much will the Symbian foundation affect Windows, only time will tell.
Keep reading this column to choose a better mobile platform.

After Nokia's recent acquisition of Trolltech and seeing from the loads of in house Open source initiatives seems like Nokia wants to get out a Open Source handset Series . We call it OSeries
It might sound funny but when we learnt abcd its its O after N...
Jokes apart .. Nokia might be working on a Linux / OS handset lineup .. Symbian has still a low adoption rate and its got a huge learning curve. Theres a huge Java developer community out there. Android handsets are expected to hit the market by mid 2008. So the Finnish handset maker might want to get some part of the Open Source / Linux handset market for sure..
For now this whole OSeries things seems like a rumor but its closer to becoming a reality after their recent buy.
Imagine being able to program your own Nokia handset !!
The possibilities are endless .. The next Nokia O Series phone might be called the O95 8 GB O82 .. Sounds really good .. Imagine having a linux variant of the same phone hardware.

The news is out Nokia buys yet another company. This time Nokia is buying a Norwegian Linux mobile developer firm Trolltech
Trolltech are the makers of the Greephone
The Finnish giant seems to be embracing the Qt or Qtopia mobile platform as Russ points out. Its seen as a move by the worlds largest handset maker to expand its software and internet based services.
Dr Kai Öistämö, the head of Nokia's devices unit, said the acquisition would aid Nokia in its strategies of being "a leader of the converged world in internet mobility" and "growing consumer services and businesses solutions".
So is this the rise of the mobile web 2.0 or is it just Nokia 2.0?
Does this mean that Motorola , which is already having problems with its handset business has to shut down it handset business ?
Interestingly Motorola uses Qt platform for some of its phones and Motorola is a leading developer of Linux based phones.
Also would it be great if Nokia acquires Motorola's handset business ?
Nokia seems to be thinking beyond the mobile these days .
On a sidenote is this buy influenced by the rise of the goolge android platform and also due to power of the OpenMoko platform.

The pact between the Finnish company and Web search leader Google Inc. would offer consumers the ability to chat with other users of instant messaging software via the Nokia Wi-Fi device, which relies on short-range wireless networks.
The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, introduced last year, offers wireless access to digital music and video playing on a high-contrast color screen, as well as to check e-mail, surf the Web and read computer documents or play video games.
At a press conference to be held in Stockholm on Tuesday, Espoo, Finland-based Nokia will introduce a new version of the Internet Tablet with upgraded software and hardware elements, one source said.
In contrast to phones, the Nokia 770 relies on unregulated local wireless connections rather than cell phone networks.
Google Talk, which allows users to chat via text or to talk with other instant message users, will be one of the featured applications on the Nokia Internet Tablet, a second source confirmed.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the news.
