Airtel announced network transformation program – Project Leap last year, aimed at improving network quality. Later it launched a microsite so that all the customers can see the network coverage for voice, basic data services (2G) and high speed data services (3G/ 4G) in their regions. Today it has launched open network microsite under Project Leap that will allow customers to check if the Airtel mobile network in an area is excellent, good, moderate or non-existent, along with the status of corresponding sites serving the area – existing, required, being upgraded or forcibly shut down. Airtel has launched its 4G LTE services in Sivakasi and Villupuram in Tamilnadu. It was the first operator to launch 4G in Tamilnadu back in June 2015. It was launched in Chidambaram, Sriperumbudur and Karaikudi in the state last month and is already available in Coimbatore, Erode, Hosur, Madurai, Pondicherry, Salem, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Trichy, Vellore, Cuddalore, Ambur, Rajapalayam, Kovilpatti, Periyanaicken-palayam (Tp), Namakkal and Gudiyatham.

Bharti Airtel has announced that the company and its subsidiary, Bharti Hexacom have entered into definitive agreements with Aircel and its subsidiaries, Dishnet Wireless to acquire rights to use 20 MHz of 2300 Band 4G spectrum for eight circles – Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Assam, North East, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa for an aggregate consideration of Rs. 3,500 crore.
