The Apple iPhone 4S was launched on both Aircel and Airtel in India today at a midnight launch ceremony. The Airtel launch was held at an upscale restaurant while Aircel decided to keep it real by holding the event at their South Extension market retail outlet. The launch events included handing over the handsets to the first pre-order customers.
You've already seen the plans on both the carriers. The iPhone 4S in India does not seem to have any specific tweaks made to Siri. Mapping via Siri did not work during our trials.
The Indian accent was also quite a hit or miss for the voice control service. The iPhone 4S has been priced at Rs 44,500 for the 16GB model.

We have just heard that the Apple iPhone 4S wont be coming for cheap in India. The price of the 16GB and 32GB variants on Aircel are out . The cheapest version of the iPhone 4S which is the 16GB version will come for Rs.44900 and the 32GB version will retail for a shocking Rs.50900. This information comes from a Nidhi Singal who walked into a Aircel store in the capital New Delhi and got this information. As you would know both Airtel and Aircel announced that they are launching the iPhone 4S in India . Both the operators are starting Pre-Orders from Nov 18 that is today and with this kind of pricing I'm not sure how many users would actually still think of getting one.
There is no word about the 64GB version and from what we have heard , it may never come to India at this point as even the 32GB version is priced above Rs.50000.I seriously can't digest this pricing . Is there some record for the costliest phone sold in India being broken here ? And we have not heard anything about the cheaper version of the iPhone 4.
We are still trying to confirm if ...

The operator just shared on it's Facebook page that it is launching the iPhone 4S in India on Nov 25th. Yesterday Aircel and Airtel announced they are launching the iPhone 4S in India soon.
We guess Aircel (and Airtel) might announce their pricing ( and weird money back plans ) on the 25th. We don't have any details about the pricing but should have some info soon. The iPhone 4S packs a Dual Core CPU , 8MP Camera with Full HD video recording and the interesting virtual assistant Siri. Looks wise its almost same as the previous iPhone - the iPhone 4. The device runs on iOS 5 which is the latest operating system for iPhone , iPad and iPod touch.
UPDATE : Pre-booking for iPhone 4S starts on Nov 18th according to Aircel

Aircel India just announced on it's official Facebook page earlier today that it is bringing the Apple iPhone 4S to India soon. The company would be sharing more details about the launch soon. There are no details about the pricing or the plans but expect it to be similar to the iPhone 4 Pricing with a slight premium. We might also see the introduction of the 8GB iPhone 4 along with the 16GB 32GB and 64GB iPhone 4S

If you are one amongst consumers who had purchased the iPhone 4S from outside India and were facing issues getting it to work here , good news for you. Many users including me were seeing no signal bars on the iPhone 4S in India. Calls and SMS were not working.Surprisingly 3G data was working fine on most operators including Airtel , Vodafone and BSNL. I had tried using some international SIM cards such as AT&T, T-Mobile , O2 UK, 3 UK, SmarTone (HK). The issue was strange as I had another iPhone 4S which was working perfectly fine with all the SIM cards.
Look at the speedtest below on BSNL. Awesome speeds but no signal bars ! Weird right ?
Awesome speed yet no bars
iPhone 4S was working perfectly fine outside India
This is the same phone which was working perfectly fine in the UK. In fact i was using the 4S as a Hotspot for my laptop as I had unlimited data from 3UK.
Hardware problem ? Not convinced
If the device had a manufacturing defect or if the hardware was faulty, how would it work in the UK that too for a couple of days without throwing up an error. In fact ...

To activate 3G on Aircel you have send an sms START 3G to 121 We did not get any settings but we got a reply that the service has been activated.Aircel has a promotion for 3G in which you get 250 MB of free usage till Feb 27th and 50 mins of video calls You have to create a new APN / Accesspoint – aircelgprs.pr in order to get the connection working on a prepaid sim card. The 3G coverage seems pretty spotty and not fully ready yet. The connection kept switching from HSPA to EDGE many times. I managed to get about 1.8 Mbps or 1870 kbps in terms of download speed. The upload speeds never crossed 300 kbps. Aircel has pretty bad coverage even for voice in my area and I can’t expect a miracle for 3G. But anyways , its always great to have choices. We have 3 operators ...

When the 3G licenses were awarded to operators in India last year , none of the players won a pan-India license. Some players won licenses in 13 circles and others in 9 or lesser number of circles. Now a report from LightReading states that Aircel and Tata have been busy in talks to roll out 3G services together .An industry source told the publication that Aircel and Tata have decided to team up to offer 3G services in all circles where they have won licenses. Aircel has won licenses in 13 circles and Tata has won in 9. The duo share 3 circles. Tata Docomo has already launched 3G services in India and Aircel is expected to launch 3G services anytime.
There are also rumours that Airtel , Vodafone and IDEA are teaming up to roll out 3G services.
Hope we get our 3G at least in 2011 !

In a surprising move , Aircel had launched the Peek handheld email device in India. The Peek supports multiple email accounts with a unified inbox. Push email service is being provided along with the device. It is also possible to view attachments on the device.
On a hardware front, the Peek is fairly thin and light while packing in a full QWERTY keyboard and a large color screen. Being a single purpose device, the battery life has been optimized and delivers several days of backup time.
Priced at Rs. 2999, the Peek is a decent alternative for companies looking to equip their employees with smartphones for emailing purposes. However due to its single purpose nature, even a basic smartphone will provide much greater functionality.
The Peek data plans are available both on PrePaid and PostPaid and the device is available in Black and Red colors

Tata DOCOMO recently launched 5 new GPRS on Demand Packs. At first glance it was still unfortunate that Tata Docomo had yet not launched an Unlimited GPRS much like that of Aircel. However on careful analysis one can say that Tata Docomo has hit all the right notes with these GPRS packs which may ultimately prove to be more beneficial and equally economical for the customers.
As per an analysis the following are the facts:
1) Tata Docomo Rs. 5 GPRS Pack: This pack is the first of its kind in the industry, available on demand and seems to be catered for those who are not frequent GPRS users. So if you want to surf the net, suddenly need to check your mail or just chat for a short period of time, this Daily GPRS all you need to do is just send an SMS and it is activated. On Aircel however, a user has no option but to buy a Rs. 15 GPRS pack with a 3 day validity. Although this pack may have Unlimited data Usage, it is practically inconsequential and useless for a user who does not make use of the GPRS facility on a daily basis and also offers ...

After the immense success of Tata Docomo's per second pulse plan which made it the top operator in terms of user additions, TRAI is now considering the idea of introducing the same throughout all the operators now.
According to TRAI, all the telecom operators may be soon forced to give the option of paying based on the usage per second pulse instead of the current per minute pulse.
JS Sarma, Chairman of TRAI said that they will soon come out with a paper on this subject and invite suggestions on making this plan mandatory or not.
TRAI is also reconsidering the clause in current regulations which allow the mobile phone operators decide the tariffs and plans.
Some of the major Mobile Operators like BSNL and Aircel have already started offering per second pulse in select states like Karnataka, AP, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal etc and other operators like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are expected to follow suit soon.
What do you think? Would you prefer to pay by the new per second pulse or are you happy with your existent per minute pulse rates? Do Pass on your comments.
