The potential of 5G ft. the only mmWave demo at MWC 2019

It’s not always that we get to see the birth of a new generation of cellular wireless technology. Sure we have been reporting about it since 2015, the murmurs started as far back as 2009 but fast forward 10 years, 5G is not a buzzword anymore, it is a reality. We have devices ready to go to market with battle tested functioning chips, the standards are in place and many nations are getting the 5G spectrum ready so that operators can deploy infrastructure. While operational difficulties are being solved at speeds we can’t imagine, it is time we take a big picture look at 5G. How is this new technology going to change our lives? Well, let’s first take a deep dive into this new technology and how it was demonstrated at the Qualcomm booth at Mobile World Congress 2019.

Conversations with Qualcomm – What’s next with 5G?

As with every technological leap, adoption takes time. Smart analysts use the adoption curve to predict how fast a technological advancement reaches people and how many people it reaches at a given time. We are now at the early adopter stage in 5G, it’s here but we are only at the very beginning of its inevitable spread to not just masses of people but devices as well. To understand how that’s done, read our first conversation but in this one, we are talking about the near term and long term plans. What’s next with 5G? Read on.

Conversations with Qualcomm – How 5G became a reality in 2019

“5G is not a buzzword anymore, it is a reality. 5G is here!” is what Ignacio Contreras from Qualcomm told me when I said 5G is a big buzzword at the Mobile World Congress 2019. Truth be told, he was right. There were some 5-7 devices all primed and ready to go to market, all with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem and the latest 855 chip inside. So, how did it all of this happen so fast? How did Qualcomm manage to bring 5G into this world way before they said they would. And what is 5G in 2019 all about? I’ll try to explain what I could gather from my conversations with Qualcomm at MWC 2019, read on.
