Intel showcased world’s first 14nm fanless mobile PC reference design at the ongoing Computex 2014 in Taipei. Dubbed as Llama Mountain, the tablet is based on the company’s upcoming Broadwell processor and is runs on Windows 8.1.
In a bid to boost sales of low-end Android tablets, Intel has teamed up with Chinese mobile chipmaker Rockchip. Under the agreement, the chipmakers signed an agreement to jointly offer a quad-core processor and integrated modem called SoFIA, which will be available in the first half of 2015, said Intel in an official release.

Intel has unveiled the company’s latest 64-bit Intel Atom Processor Z3480 (formerly Merrifield) for smartphones and tablets and has also detailed their 64-bit 2.3GHz quad-core Atom Z3580 processor for Android devices, code-namedMoorefield. The Intel Z3480 is a dual-core chip based on 22nm process technology. The Atom Z3480 has PowerVR G6400 GPU and is optimized for Intel XMM 7160 LTE Modem. Intel is the company everybody knew because of processors that still power the everyday PCs and laptops. But the sales of PCs and laptops has been outdone by the sales of smartphones and tablets. People are moving on and portable devices are the new thing. Intel has been producing chips for the smartphones and tablets, but it hasn’t earned much of a consideration from the manufacturers who seem to be more than content with ARM based SoCs. Intel has to fight hard to survive this battle and looks like they are having another go at the smartphone and tablet market in the upcoming MWC 2014.
Intel has introduced its first Android-based Education Tablet reference design aimed at students and schools. The tablet has Education materials for students, and tools for teachers to manage e-learning classrooms. It is a part of Intel Education Solutions which has Intel Education Software that includes tools for 21st century learning, communication, collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and literary skills. This tablet is rugged, which can withstand 70 cm drop, has IP52 rating for dust and water resistance. Intel has unveiled Edison, the company’s new Quark technology-based computer in an SD card form factor at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It also has built-in wireless support and is based on 22nm dual-core Intel Quark technology for ultra-small and low power-sensitive smart consumer products and wearable computing. Last year Intel unveiled Quark X1000, a range of small SoCs aimed at wearables. CEO Brian Krzanich has revealed that Intel would unveil innovative wearables at CES, according to his interview with Recode. Intel would introduce new SoCs in the Quark chip family and a range third-party wearable devices powered by the Quark chip at CES in Las Vegas next week, says the CEO. Intel is gearing up to start making 64 bit ARM chips starting next year. Before you jump to conclusions, do know that Intel is planning to fabricate 64 bit ARM chips for its partner Altera, signaling a huge wave of change for the company. It is very well known that Intel is struggling in its mobile business, only recently making strides with the Clovertrail and Baytrail SoCs, and they are all based on the x86 architecture. Intel does not only make its own chips, it does fabrication for other companies too, like Altera for example. The current market leader for ARM fabrication is undoubtedly TSMC, which does fabrication for most companies from Nvidia to Qualcomm. So, in perfect sense, Intel is now a competitor to TSMC rather than Qualcomm or Nvidia.
Intel has announced the Atom Z3000 Series SoC at the IDF 2013. This was previously called Bay Trail-T and was first announced in May, which is based on 22nm Silvermont Microarchitecture. This supports Android and full Windows 8 operating systems on mobile devices including tablets. The 22nm tri-gate transistors offers high performance and improves the efficiency and power sharing across the CPU and GPU, including graphics, camera and display processes. At the Intel Developer Forum 2013, Intel announced a new series of SoCs called as “Quark” SoC. The main motive behind the “Quark” SoC is small size and power consumption. The small Quark SoCs are expected to be much much smaller than the current Intel Atom SoC and that would make them perfectly compatible for the wearable gadgets that are expected to drive the technology race in the coming years.
Intel is the new company to join the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP). The A4WP technology uses near-field magnetic resonance technology to wirelessly charge devices. Intel joins several giants including Samsung, Qualcomm, LG and HTC as a board member of the group. The group has a total of 40 global, technology industry leaders. The aim of A4Wp is to create a wireless power transfer (WPT) ecosystem that delivers spatial freedom in the user experience and industrial design of wireless battery charging of portable consumer electronics device.
Lenovo today introduced its flagship smartphone, the Intel CloverTrail+ powered Lenovo K900, in India. Show off earlier at CES, the phone has a mammoth 5.5inch Full HD display that is covered by a Gorilla Glass 2 panel. Under the hood is a 2Ghz dual core Intel Atom Z2580 processor. During our brief time with the phone we felt that this processor was more than capable of keeping everything running smooth. Intel revealed its first prototype smartphone built on its next Atom smartphone chip codenamed Merrifield. The processor chip is slated to provide a 50 percent performance boost over current chips and will have much improved battery life as well.
Shown off by Tom Kilroy during the keynote session at Computex, the chip will ship to carriers and device makers early next year. Kilroy also stated that we should expect to see the first phones running on the Merrifield chip at MWC 2014. Intel today announced the next step of its mobile strategy. The Silvermont architecture is a complete departure from the Clover Trail and Clover Trail+ chips that Intel has been pushing since 2008. With a switch to yearly update cycles, the company hopes to be much more competitive in the extremely hot mobile chipset segment.
