“You want more megapixels? We’ve got more megapixels!” That seems to be the motto of Sony Ericsson nowadays. In the constant war between phone manufacturers to cram higher resolution camera sensors in their handsets, nothing is more enticing than hearing someone like Sony Ericson claim that 20 MegaPixel phone cameras will be available in 2012!

Yes, well that just wasn’t their one and only prediction for 2012. They also stated that we will be running 1Ghz CPUs in our phones, will enjoy full HD for video recording and XGA screen resolution, and will be browsing the web at 100 Mbps. Sweet.

But just today, we received confirmation that their predictions might be well on track. They made a very interesting announcement for their new Exmor CMOS image sensor lineup. The lineup includes a 5MP, an 8MP and the grand finale, a 12MP camera sensor. The best news is that it might just hit the street in mid2009!

Wow, Sony, just wow! Now how about making a wider availability of optical zooms, getting better lenses and coding better imaging software, and implementing HD video recording before 2012 for a change? We love Megapixels, but honestly, after 8MP, it gets silly to keep running after the numbers.

There are huge places and markets where nokia has extended its presence and it has raised its claim to an extent that it is sheer monopoly dominance. But it’s hard to imagine if there is a market that would force Nokia to even move out to pull of its loses. Here is the market anyways, that’s made nokia do so., Japan. Nokia never had a huge presence there anyway [the total market presence was only close to 1%., phew are we talking Motorola or Nokia].

“In the current global economic climate, we have concluded that the continuation of our investment in Japan-specific localized products is no longer sustainable,” Nokia executive vice president Timo Ihamuotila said in a statement.

He added that Nokia’s Japanese business would concentrate on research, development and sourcing for the global market as well as specific projects such as the Vertu brand
“Nokia is facing global earnings problems and many other issues, and this shows Japan was a low-priority market at a time when they are shoring up global operations, even though it may still be attractive,” IDC Japan analyst Michito Kimura said.

“I’m not very surprised by the decision.”

The move was still rather abrupt as NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan’s biggest mobile phone operator, said just this month that it would sell a new Nokia smartphone as part of its product line-up for the winter shopping season.

So Nokia just pep up and spend more on research and get us better phones. Don’t waste on a market that doesn’t know your worth.

The latest N Series phone a.ka. The Nokia N85 is in town.

Its one of the most feature packed N Series phones as on date.

The Nokia N85 is touted as the successor to the N95

We review the Nokia N85 and take you through the highlights of this NSeries phone

With a strong lineup of multimedia features, the Nokia N85 is taking the world of mobile convergence to the next level. Gaming, photos, navigation and music blend together with the newest Ovi and third party services via 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity to make discovering and sharing experiences quick and seamless.

The N85 reminds us very much of the N81 which was the first phone to support a new casing.

Slider:

One of the main drawbacks and the greatest strength of the device is the slider. It takes in a great effort to actually slide open the device to reveal the multimedia keys on the top of the phone hiding conveniently behind the screen. It’s really difficult to pull it open. It causes a great deal of pushing and easily scratches the device. Well the same is not the case when we have to reveal the keypad by sliding the screen upwards. It’s a breeze and slider mechanism is good. But this solution too causes several scratches on the lower part of the device, just below the keyboard. And this is a huge let down and also a huge finger print magnet. Being in a tropical country like India, devices so glossy really make you miss a beat when you see it get dirty with just a few minutes of usage. And when you use the d-pad or the highly unreliable navi pad, the entire top slider gives you a highly uncomfortable sense as it keeps dangling and I guess this is a serious design flaw. It is not very easy either to feel happy when such a device is designed so. Typing though is a breeze. It’s awesome to type with N 85 and it’s really reliable though its actually just a flat surface. Making a typo is highly unlikely. Of a month’s usage, I can strongly say, it’s impossible to type wrongly if at all, there are some issues with English.

Overall to conclude, slider is good, just to overcome some issues that can be forgiven considering the overall merit of the design.

This is one of the prowess nokia has developed over the years and this is definitely one of the best sliders nokia has ever made. Though some initial glitches due to mine being an early model, this is definitely on the better side.

Camera:

Camera I would say is not the best 5 mp option you have on the market. It would take a real long time for someone to produce some 5 mp cameras as good as the Nokia N82. The usage options though are good thanks to the sliding mechanism. The design feature interfaces though are the same as all other N Series models. But what was nokia doing when they were designing the camera lens cover. Gosh it collects helluva dust and can easily scratch the camera lens cover. The images are noisy and sometimes unpleasant. In proper lighting conditions the pictures are awesome. If you are not a party trooper or a real wild animal who prowls at night the N 85 camera with its decent looks is the way to go. It’s really a fashion stopper for what it can offer. Real cool looks and features for the power under its hood.

Hardware and built:

Lag, delay and hang up are words you would never utter when you use N 85. Its one of the perfect software’s on a mobile phone yet to be made. No glitches no processing, opening screens. The speed is just awesome and definitive of how much nokia is progressing. Application compatibility is also being resolved each day.
Build quality was never an issue. Just one word: “awesome, no faux paux”.

Just awesome awesome awesome.

Music, FM, and FM Transmitter:

Music player and music quality is too good. Though there is no dedicated sound processing engine, the quality is better though it is not up to the tune of INNOV 8 or MOTO ROKR E8. It’s definitely one of the best nokia has to offer. The in house head phones are good and they offer good quality of sound to listen.

FM is good and the reception quality is awesome.

FM transmitter is a great feature and it worked well with my cab whenever I travelled to my shift in the cab.

Email and messaging:

All email clients are supported and the routine header limit size of the mail you can download all are available as always in every other nokia mobile.

Sms works like a cake walk. An interesting feature is that as it use feature pack 2 when you try to send a sms 10 sms long it automatically converts to a MMS and tries to send it. It’s a new feature and quite nice though for people like me who love to send sms forwards it’s a pain though.

Battery life and Memory:

Battery life is awesome and the best on any phone. It easily surpasses the 3 day mark for me, and I had to rush for the charger only on the 3rd day or 4th day morning. Any mode any technique of usage gives this much of a battery life.

It comes in boxed with a 8 gb card and that’s good enough to store all the music, videos we want.

WIFI, connectivity:

I used wifi to connect my phone for emails and all other web based services and its really great to use.

Conclusion

“The Nokia N85 was created to be more than the sum of its parts, offering a complete mobile entertainment package designed for connecting, sharing and discovering,” said Juha-Pekka Sipponen, Director, Nokia Nseries. “The iconic Nokia Nseries dual slider design has evolved to become smaller and sleeker while integrating the newest features and services to deliver the best mobile experience to date.”

All in all N85 is the best phone available right now in the N SERIES clan.

Its priced at Rs.24000 and is available with most Nokia retailers , its cheaper than the N96 by almost Rs.10000

Nokia launched its much awaited Touch Screen Music handset the Nokia 5800 in India.

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is the ultimate music and entertainment device that will bring touch User Interface to a broad segment of Indian consumers as well as provide them with a newer & better way of experiencing music. The device along with offering a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, also has a pen stylus and for true music enthusiasts, a plectrum.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a music and entertainment device complemented by a touch interface. Taking advantage of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic introduces the ‘Media Bar’, a handy drop down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, including favourite tracks, videos and photos. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the Web and to online sharing.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry’s most powerful sound. The innovative ‘Contacts Bar’ lets consumers highlight four favorite contacts on their home-screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

At the launch, Nokia also announced the scheduled launch of the beta version of the Nokia Music Store and its tie-up with a host of international and Indian music companies giving Indian consumers an opportunity to discover and enjoy their favourite music from hundreds of regional and vernacular music labels.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia said, “With more than 300 million music enabled devices sold, and a strong base of over 10 Nokia Music stores in operation globally, Nokia has been able to gain incredible amount of knowledge and insights on what people want in a music device and track important trends on how people consume music. We will continue to break new grounds in this space by building more and better services for our consumers.”

“Mobile music will continue to be a key priority area for Nokia in 2009 and our strategy is aimed at developing the market for mobile music by following a partnership driven model that enriches consumer experience with innovative devices, accessories and local content,” Mr.Vanjoki added.

Nokia Music Store, a part of the OVI, is an online music service that will deliver over a million tracks from global hits to local artists and provide Indian consumers the freedom to enjoy music at their fingertips. Everything works with one user interface, giving people the opportunity to connect to the music they want, in the way they want. The Nokia Music Store beta will go live in December 2008.

To enable locally relevant content, Nokia has tied up with leading international music companies – Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI and Warner – and major independent Indian record labels including Tseries, Big Music, Yashraj and many more. The company is also planning to join hands with India’s leading music body, Indian Music Industry (IMI), a consortium of over 150 music companies, to give consumers an opportunity to discover and enjoy their favourite music across genres and languages.

Call it a gigantic leak if you want, we’re calling it an early Christmas gift. The candy shop is open: Nokia’s internal roadmap has just been revealed by anonymous tipster to Engadget Mobile. What is an internal roadmap? Well it’s the products under development by Nokia, even before they become prototypes available for testing. Yeah, THAT early. But it’s our chance to delve through the numbers and the incomplete specs, and see what our beloved Finnish manufacturer will be up to.

It’s not one, but 13 Smartphone models under development that we’re looking at here, with tons of exciting handsets that we sure hope will see the actual light of day.

Before we show you the full table, let us highlight the models that we think are worth mentioning:

Surfer: runs S60 3rd Edition FP2, and features a QWERTY and a 5MP camera with DVB-H. We’re thinking this is the rumored QWERTY Nseries device

IP08: runs S605th Edition, with a widescreen touchscreen, QWERTY and 5MP camera. The other features are pretty much Nokia-standard now. This seems to be the new Nseries touchscreen handset! And it does look promising with a QWERTY!

Ivalo: Seems to be the follow-up to IP08 and holds 32GB of built-in memory!

Eitri: is pretty much similar to IP08 but has 8GB of internal memory, and an integrated compass, accelerometer and proximity sensor.

Corolla: runs S60 5th Edition with a 3inch VGA display (non touchscreen), but offers a dazzling 8MP camera, a “half-qwerty” keyboard, 8GB of built-in memory, and the other Nokia standards. This smells like the new flagship Nseries from Nokia, but put in a touchscreen and we will be drooling even more!

Now here’s the full roadmap, tell us if we missed anything worth mentioning!

HTC might bundle the handset with an Airtel Connection like RIM does for BlackBerry. HTC also offers a few phones exclusively on Airtel. Univercell shows this phone as coming soon and its priced at Rs.25000 or 500 USD

This is an interesting price point as iPhone 3G , Omnia and Xperia are all more costly than G1

G1 is definitely not a phone you would buy for its looks .. But still these are the phones which are making the news these days .

Would you buy the G1 for 25000 ?

Our feeling is that that HTC might sell this handset unlocked unlike the Apple iPhone which is a dismal failure in terms of sales .

Apple Inc. and AT&T Mobility LLC are being dragged to court by Avi Koschitzki who claims that the iPhone 3G is defective.

The suit was moved from the Nassau County Supreme Court, the state court where it was filed by plaintiff, to a federal court in the Eastern District of New York. The primary complaints are with the allegedly easily breakable casing and spotty 3G network coverage.

“The 3G iPhones do not and cannot adequately perform due to the insufficient 3G bandwidths and AT&T infrastructure,” the suit says. The suit is “based upon information and belief that the 3G iPhones demand too much power from the 3G bandwidths and the AT&T infrastructure is insufficient to handle this overwhelming 3G signal based on the high volume of 3G iPhones it and Apple have sold,” the suit says.

The class-action suit may include consumers that bought defective iPhones designed, marketed, manufactured, distributed and sold by the defendants.

The plaintiff and members of the class are seeking “restitutionary and injunctive relief, including: (a) compensatory, punitive and statutory damages; (b) disgorgement and restitution of Defendants’ ill-gotten gains for unfair business practices, untrue and misleading advertising; and (c) disclosures and/or disclaimers on the outside of its boxes or advertising material prior to making any electronics device purchase.”

In a time of excessive recession, the buoyant sales figures of both companies will hit a road block if the suit is successful.

At the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, Samsung announced a new beast after its stellar Innov8. The Samsung I7110 is an S60 3rd Edition FP2 device that has a lot to brag about. An awesome 2.4″ OLED screen, a 5MP camera with LED flash, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, an optical mouse for a more intuitive browsing experience, an accelerometer, built-in GPS with geotagging and navigation (only 10 European cities supported), an FM Transmitter.

Being an S60 device, the I7110 will allow you to install tons of 3rd-party applications and hence transform it into a mobility powerhouse. At only 12.9mm thick, and with a metallic body, the I7110 is definitely a looker and a very tempting alternative for the Nokia N85.

Unwired View has had their hands on the device and bring us a small introductory video:

The I7110 has also already been fully reviewed and although it obviously doesn’t beat the Innov8, it still is a very good value for money. The OLED screen is certainly a winner, as well as its great camera which delivers better results than the N96, its thin and slim design as well as the inclusion of Route 66 for the GPS. Every other feature on the I7110’s software works well. On the negatives, there seems to be a problem with the soft keys which are apparently difficult to use and poorly designed. Of course, this is still a prototype so Samsung can still fix this problem before the official release.
