Samsung just announced Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones at its Unpacked 2018 event at the MWC 2018 in Barcelona, as it had promised. The main highlight of the smartphones is the variable aperture cameras. The S9 has a 12-megapixel rear camera with variable aperture tech that uses f/1.5 aperture for night shots for a brighter picture and f/2.4 aperture for normal shots in daytime. The S9+ has a secondary 12MP Telephoto lens for live focus for bokeh effect with background blur. HMD Global introduced Nokia 7 Plus, Android One smartphone at the MWC 2018, as expected. It has a 6-inch 18:9 Full HD+ display, is powered by Snapdragon 660, has dual rear sensors with ZEISS optics that combine an ultra-sensitive 12MP wide-angle primary camera for both low-light and extra bright conditions and a secondary 13MP camera for 2x optical zoom.
HMD Global announced Nokia 6 (2018) and the successor of last year’s Nokia 6 China last month. Today at its MWC 2018 it introduced another Nokia 6 smartphone for global markets, which is an Android One smartphone. It has a 5.5-inch 1080p 2.5D curved glass display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, is powered by Snapdragon 630 Mobile platform, runs on Android 8.0 (Oreo), has a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash, ZEISS optics and a 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Huawei just announced MediaPad M5 series 10.8″ and 8.4″ at the MWC 2018 in Barcelona. It comes in 10.8-inch and 8.4-inch versions with WQXGA (2560 x 1600 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display, is powered by an Octa-Core Kirin 960 SoC and runs on Android 8.0 (Oreo) with EMUI 8.0 on top. It has a 13-megapixel auto focus rear camera with PDAF and an 8MP front camera. It has a metal unibody design and also has a fingerprint sensor on the home button, below the display. TCL Communication, along with the new Alcatel smartphones announced two new 1T series of tablets ahead of MWC 2018. Both these run Android 8.1 Oreo and feature Kids Mode, a dedicated mode that comes with pre-loaded applications and content, such as games, kid’s camera, and drawing app and also has built-in parental control interface to set usage limits. TCL showcased Alcatel 1X, Alcatel 3V and Alcatel 5 under new Alcatel 1, 3 and 5 series at the CES last month. Today at an event it detailed the specifications of the Alcatel 1X, 1C, Alcatel 3, 3X, 3V and Alcatel 5 phones along with the price and also introduced the first Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphone Alcatel 1X, ahead of MWC 2018 next week. All the phones have 18:9 displays, expect for the Alcatel 1X Go Edition, other 1X variants and 3 and 5 series have a fingerprint sensor on the back and Face Key face unlock.
LG just announced V30S ThinQ , the company’s first ThinQ mobile device with integrated AI features ahead of MWC 2018 next week. Apart from the A.I features, it has similar specifications of the V30, but this has 6GB RAM and comes in 128GB (V30S ThinQ) and 256GB storage (V30S+ ThinQ) variants. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones running on MIUI 9.2 based on Android Nougat 7.1 in India on 14th February. The smartphone duo went on sale for the first time in India on 22nd February and company claims to have sold over 3 lakh units under 3 minutes. Xiaomi today announced that it has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to collaborate in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and the development of equipment for use with notebook computers. The companies will also collaborate in personal assistants using their own existing devices, including Microsoft’s Cortana.
Samsung back in September announced that it is working on 7LPP (Low Power Plus) with EUV (extreme ultra violet) lithography technology for smartphones that is targeted for initial production in the second half of 2018.
