Did the Indian Weather stop Apple from launching the iPhone 3GS

Indian consumers feel humiliated , frustrated and irritated.  If the 3GS iPhone can go from Cupertino to China to Korea to Japan and even Mauritius ? Why not India. There are many reasons which might be preventing Apple from launching it here . But one reason which we like to bring to the table is the Hot and Humid Indian Summer.

The official Apple website lists the Environment requirements for the iPhone

Not the maximum Operating Temperature and Nonoperating Temperature. Its 35 degrees and 45 degrees. Except for the Himalayas and other Hill stations, Most of urban indian temperature hits aroun 40 degress Celsius during summer. Which means that it not great weather for operation of iGadgets.  Apple products are always known for the heat related problems. There are even videos on youtube of making an omlette on a Macbook.

Apple has a support page which talks about keeping an iPhone 3G/3GS under operating conditions and this page was created during summer this year. Apple even advises not to leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed the safe range.

Now if you already use a 3GS in India , make sure you purchase an Air Conditioner during summer to keep it cool. But for now enjoy the cool weather !

    Hi Varun
A lot of indians use apple products with no fear of overheating. I think your reason stated is invalid because if that was the case indians would have been deprived of Iphone 3G. I am not sure why do you say so since Apple has not launched any official statement regarding release/non release of the 3GS version.

I’d say that we should write to Apple and ask them to release the phone here. Maybe, if they see enough demand…

    Hi Kunal,

I m a huge fan of Apple products and have a macbook , ipod and the iphone :-)

I have few unconfirmed reports from anonymous sources that iPhone 3GS is delayed due to some roadblocks like Govt. regulations, Operator issues and also stock issues.

Since this is something not official and not 100% confirmed , I even put it as a question in the title :-)

    @author..

cud be one of the reasons.. but lemme just remind u 1 thing.. the indoor temperatures even in places like nagpur (where i live) dnt rise above 35degree C, hence it shudnt be a factor to be worried abt… and even if using outdoors no bdy will use it under direct sunlight (i wudnt coz its useless neway :P )

yet waiting for a launch or for somebdy to go abroad.. cant risk buying it frm nebdy here.. :P

    cheers..

The reason is simple as India has only setup the 3G network
in major cities. Just because some companies are advertising
it like it is all over the country is just wrong.
It will take several years for that to happen.

Just get yourself unlocked iphone from Singapore or something.

Not sure if you got the reasons correctly.. the 3GS has been available in Singapore, Malaysia etc. where temperature match or exceed India.
The real reason for Apple could be the lack of 3G in India and hence commercially it does not help them maintain a revenue stream from the carriers. This is the reason why the phone price in India is higher (not subsidised).

Also, based on my experience with various iPhones in India with data plans, it has been less than impressive. I have moved to a Blackberry (yes) as my primary phone with the iPhone 3G doing iPod and PDA functions only.
Moreover, the data plan pricing (BB vs iPhone) in India is not favoring the iPhone in any way.

    varun,

I am very sure that operating temp is not the case cos when 3G and 3GS can be launched here from apple officially, where max temp goes upto 60 during summer and its like 6 months summer and average temp is summer remain 40, i dont think it shud be any problem for indian climate. M sure there are other reasons. govt regulations, sales in indian market for that price, etc etc. But definitely its not the environmental factors.
