You must have heard a lot of news surrounding MNP or Mobile Number Portability. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has finally fixed the various charges for Mobile Number Portability in India and the TRAI press release is below. If you are still wondering what does MNP mean to you read further.

  • Are you sticking to the same Operator for many years just for the fancy mobile number you possess despite the poor network coverage in your area  ?
  • Do plans from another Operator seem more affordable / attractive to you compared to the current operator ?
  • Are you a Technology enthusiast and want to figure out whats MNP ?

If you said to any one of the questions above then you might make use of MNP to move to another mobile network operator and retain your same old mobile number. Now lets get to the charges.

You have to pay a porting  charge to port your mobile number from one network to another.

This fee has been fixed at Rs.19 only. TRAI has indicated that

The amount to be paid by the subscriber shall not be more than the per port transaction charge i.e. Rs.19. Operators are free to charge any amount less than or equal to this charge

These charges will come into effect on 31st December  and MNP is expected to be available in Metros and Category A circles by this date. It is expected to be available in other circles by March.

Are you interested in MNP  ? Will you use the service ?

I want to know if the mobile no. with post paid connection of one service provider(old) can be ported as a pre paid connection of another service provider(new). Also, if one is having an ‘old’ metro city no. can it be ported to a ‘new’ rural no?

    Hi All,
Its very much happy to hear TRAI’s decision to fix MNP @ just 19 INR. Many cellular oparators in india now are failing to provide good & effective service to their customers. By introducing MNP they might be concentrate on providing good quality of services.

    Thanks & Regards

Really this is a very good step from TRAI. Now, you can choose your service provider even with your same number. And the portability charegs are also quite reasonable. Thanks to TRAI. Bipin, Vadodara.

I was wondering if I can get a number ported from one CP which is in State A to other CP which is in state B. Is this possible in MNP or number porting will be done only within the same circle unlike in UK where one can get a number ported to different place and different CP(also known as Movers)?

    • rama aju

Number portability in licensed Service Area it means limited to within state (LSA)

  • Aditi

It can be between prepaid to postpaid of two different operators ?

  • CDMA user

This a good move by TRAI… In most of the countries this option is available and now its coming to India too. I am a CDMA customer with reliance and I will be one of the first benefeciaries of this MNP policy.. In GSM you have all the fancy handsets and there is a great choice but CDMA users, who cannot change their numbers coz of years of usage will be very happy to get this option. Even if you pay and get a CDMA phone from abroad they will not activate the same. Its really stupid policy being followed and I am sure a lot CDMA customers will switch over to GSM.. But frankily speaking you may not get the same call clarity of CDMA in GSM. I am using CDMA for five years and GSM for three.

    • Abe rajan

i am cofused whether CDMA Number can be changed to GSM. When i asked to a dealer it will not work in gsm & vice versa

    • Zaheer

you bet..but Vodafone call clarity is said to be good
