MediaTek licenses ARM Cortex-A50 Series CPUs and new Mali GPUs

MediaTek has announced that they have acquired a broad license to Cortex-A50 Series processor cores and the next generation of ARM Mali Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) solutions. MediaTek already uses ARM Coretex A7, Cortex A9 and Cortex A15 CPUs for their quad-core and dual-core chips. The company recently announced a True Octa-Core chip solution and also revealed MT8135 quad-core chip based on ARM big.LITTLE and with PowerVR Series6 GPU.

ARM unveiled the Cortex A53 and A57 Processors in the Cortex A50 series last year based on ARMv8 architecture. These are based on ARM’s big.LITTLE Processing technology, offers better power saving and more performance than the Cortex-A15 processors. This is compatible  with both 64-bit and 32-bit execution. MediaTek has been using The PowerVR GPUs for its processor and this is the first time they would use ARM Mali GPU.

It is not clear which category upcoming chips are aimed at, hope we can expect both smartphone and tablet chips based the the ARM Coretex-A50 and Mali GPU. MediaTek did not reveal when we can expect these chips. These chips are expected sometime in 2014.
