Sony’s Camera Remote APIs lets you write viewfinder apps for its cameras

Sony just unveiled its new range of Camera lenses that use your Smartphone as a viewfinder. Pretty cool concept, but what if one wants to adopt similar functionality for Sony’s other cameras and make specialized apps for the same? Well, Sony’s got you covered as they have just announced their all new Camera Remote APIs that will let you write Viewfinder apps for their cameras, not just their Camera lenses. And since the APIs are platform agnostic, you can literally write camera viewfinder apps for literally any platform.

  • Develop your own applications to control camera or get captured image and create Photo Uploader,
Time Lapse Control Software, or other novel ideas for applications using the latest and greatest Sony cameras.

  • Start Today with the easy to learn and use, JSON based Application Programming Interface (API).

  • Since the API is platform agnostic, you can develop for your choice of operating systems like Android™, iOS™, Windows™ or others.

There you go. That’s how useful the Camera Remote APIs are. Really glad that Sony is opening up the APIs for its cameras, but how many of them will be supported?

The following eight Sony cameras are compatible with the Camera Remote API beta:

・ Action Cam HDR-AS30, HDR-AS15*2

・ Music video recorder HDR-MV1

・ Digital still camera Cyber-shot® DSC-QX100, DSC-QX10

・ Interchangeable-lens digital camera α ® NEX-6, NEX-5R, NEX-5T compatible with PlayMemories Camera Apps*3

More models will be added to this list in the future.

The newly released Action Cam, the Music video recorder, the new camera lenses and the recently launched NEX cameras are the only ones that are supported now, but if Sony is to be believed, any camera with WiFi facility will get the API support, hopefully. This is a great move from Sony in the world of connected cameras, especially with them promoting NFC-WiFi interoperability in cameras. Definitely a good sign.
