ARM unveils Cortex-A12 Processor and Mali-T622 GPU aimed at mid-range smartphones and tablets

ARM Cortex-A12

ARM has unveiled the the Cortex-A12 Processor and Mali-T622 GPU at the Computex 2013 in Taipei aimed at mid-range smartphones and tablets. The Cortex-A12 would offer 40 percent more performance than Cortex-A9, brings premium features such as virtualization, TrustZone and ARM’s big.LITTLE processing,  It is based on 28nm technology and is about 30 percent smaller in area compared to the Cortex-A9 processor in 40nm technology using the same configuration. The Mali-T622 GPU in the Mali-T600 series would offer 50% improvement over the first generation of the Mali-T600 series and supports OpenGL/ES 3.0. ARM unveiled the 2nd Gen T-600 GPUs, Mali-T624, Mali-T628 and Mali-T678 last year.

Main Features of the ARM Cortex-A12 Processor

  • 1TB addressable memory space – supporting future needs of mobile software
  • Virtualization and TrustZone® security technology – security enabling new use cases like BYOD for your mobile device
  • Based on the ARMv7-A architecture that allows existing applications to operate seamlessly on Cortex-A12 processor-based SoCs.
  • big.LITTLE compatible and allow big.LITTLE configuration with the high-efficiency Cortex-A7 processor.

ARM Mali-T622 GPU

Main Features of the Mali-T622 GPU

  • Offers 50% energy efficiency improvements over first generation Mali-T600  series
  • OpenGL ES 3.0 conformant that supports the Renderscript and OpenCL APIs

ARM has also introduced Mali-V500 video engine that provides dedicated video processing that is capable of offering 1080p/60 encode and decode to multiple cores supporting ultra-high definition 4K at 120 frames per second. Combined with all these IP components, the Cortex-A12 processor in a mobile SoC with Mali-T622 GPU supporting OpenGL/ES 3.0 and a Mali-V500 video accelerator, it would make a great combination that offers optimal performance with minimal energy consumption.ARM expects this IP solution in mobile devices by mid-2014.
