Samsung, with a mad obsession with large screened devices, a market they themselves help pioneer, launched two huge handsets fit for their name, namely the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, with the respective screen sizes appended to their name. We found them quite huge, unsurprisingly, and we wanted to see how the trend has been with the Samsung’s Galaxy family of Android devices with respect to growing screen sizes. So yes, we took some devices we had with us to the launch event and put them side to side to see how the screen sizes fared against each other. With that said, lets just ponder on one thing. The original Galaxy Note, that launched with a massive 5.3 inch screen was a highly criticized product for the screen size, and look where it’s got us now, with an even bigger 6.3 inch screen, the one behemoth at the end of this image below –

The smallest being the Galaxy S3 mini, with a 4 inches display. Yes, the same as the first Galaxy S device, and that was considered to be big those days. That is the smallest of the lot here –

Weirdly enough, huge devices like the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4, which are arguably of the same size thanks to a smaller bezel on the S4, look comparatively puny in this line up. Even the 5.5 inch Note II, which was Samsung’s biggest device until it unveiled its Mega devices looks small in this lineup.

Phew, these are some really large devices! But then, the market seems to be actively enjoying them no matter what Tech pundits complain about. In our small interview with Samsung India’s head of smartphones, Vineet Taneja, it was clear that Samsung wants to attack every consumer need and that they have carefully selected the screen sizes according the various consumer inputs from focus groups and surveys. Samsung says there is a lot of market research behind their decisions and we believe them, people do want a large screened device as their primary one, with the massive sales of calling tablets being a loud testament to this fact.

When is this trend going to saturate? When are we going to get tired of large screened devices? Hold on to that thought while we go ahead and pre order our Samsung Galaxy Note III in the present future.
