iPhone 3G S Finally Getting Launched in India But At A Horrendous Price Tag

on August 31, 2009 – 4:44 am797 Comments

Here is some news that might cheer up all the iPhone fans. Finally after much delay, iPhone 3G S is all set to launch in India. Apple has decided it will launch iPhone 3G S this coming September 2009.

Meanwhile, you could also check out our exclusive review of the Apple iPhone 3G S.

The iPhone 3G S which is being launched on September 19, is however coming out with an horrendous price tag of Rs. 36000 for a 16GB iPhone 3G S and something around Rs 40,000 for the 32 GB version. Also there are some speculations going on that the older version of the iPhone 16GB might be discontinued.

So will this ridiculous price tag dampen your plan of buying the iPhone 3G S? Or would you still go ahead and buy it? Do Pass on your comments.

(Thx @unitechy who got the info from Croma Mumbai)

  • amrit

oh not again i never wanna be a iphone user if i spent 35000 to 40000 i prefer omnia hd

  • http://www.mymobilescoop.com Sachu

good pricing..companies like apple dont aim on much market penetration in countries like india. And obviously only a few is going to buy it at this price.I would rather buy htc hero for this price.

  • Ravz

Hopefully they would launch an unlocked version for that price tag, i’m losing hope on the unlocked version though but hope 19th sept is a true date for its launch..

  • Harsha

I Just Called Airtel & Vodafone CC, both of them dont have any update nor their websites are updated, apple website also has no update yet, hope this is not one more rumour and 19th Sept is Saturday, how come Apple changed its Friday Tradition ???

@ Vikas, Could you please confirm the source, I checked the Unitechy on Twitter, but did not find any news there, might not be checking the right page. Please confirm the same.

  • Jamal

Me too going for HTC hero.

  • Ananth

Crap…I rather wait for another year for Nokia N900

  • Saif

Ridiculous price, may consider it if the base price is around 22k

  • Anuj

    @vikas
how come u so sure about the launch date .. i need proof

  • ankit

i will definitely go in for the iphone 3GS 32GB Black.

    @vikas
will they start selling on the 19th Sept or will it be announced on 19th?

19th is weird coz its a saturday and apple products are always launched on fridays.

  • Aaron Lee

Gah! That’s diguised robbery. 36K for 16gb? That’s totally sucks.
People were getting it in grey for a similar price. Tsk tsk apple, lots to learn.

  • SANJU

Apple will sell carrier locked iPhone familiy devices according to Apple support page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

@vikas, This is news is CONFIRMED or again a GUESS!!!

  • Anuj

guys its not launching on 19th sep .. it can never launch on a saturday

  • Nidz

are u sure abt the 19th as the launch date ??? cos the airtel cc still has no idea abt the iphone..

    I will defi be getting a 32gb white.. ! cant wait .. :D

price is a bit high i agree..

  • kamath

at this price, i hope the phone will be atleast launched as unlocked by the istores directly rather than with apple or vodaphone

  • Mangesh S

Its too expensive. I wish the price was under 20k Rs. Apple is devices are at the class of BMW / Mercedes, so we can’t expect them to be cheap. We can just dream about having an iPhone.

  • http://www.harshals.blogspot.com Harsh

Is this for sure or just another worked up rumor? I can’t see an update on any of the official sites.. I also read somewhere that these will without bundling with any of the operators, if that is the case then it would justify the high price.

  • yogeh

@ poster please give source of info……. i dont belive tht it would launch in india

  • Joy

Could you please provide the source of your news?

  • Amit

    Hey,

The price you are quoting for the new iPhone 3GS are infact lower. Market feedback is that the pricing would be around Rs. 44,000 for the iPhone 3GS 16 GB and Rs. 52,000 for the iPhone 3GS 32GB.

  • arun

No comments about the price tag as apple products were always at premium price and moreover, people dont buy apple products, they ‘posess’ them!

only concern is will it be purely unlocked to be used with any carrier? i dont want a new sim or a connection!!

  • http://www.gauravgupta.in/ Gaurav Gupta

I’m still not 100% convinced, since the source is not official. Nevertheless, here are my top 10 reasons why iPhone 3GS will be a success in India – http://bit.ly/uzjd2

  • Brijesh

I dont think this is the final date as no info is there in any website regarding the launch of iphone 3GS in INDIA….Guys dont expect anything otherwise your hopes wil be dashed to Ground like they did in August… I think iphone 3GS will remain a dream for india

  • Naveen

WTF! Apple! We earn in rupees and we wish to spend in rupees only, but not in the range of dollars. Oh my Gosh, 40K for a mobile!!! Nice way to sell a brand-name! Anyways Steve Jobs wont give a damn about Indian market. Nokia can monopolise the market again, with all its new releases.

  • ankur

can someone validate this date? airtel was quoted as sayin no launch until Oct ’09

  • Anonymous

Apple selling $100 fone at $800 in INDIA….Mera bharat Mahaan

  • rAg

finally some good news!! but am disappointed with the early launch actually… was in a mindset that iphone 3GS will be launched in october with a bundled 3G service instead of the same old EDGE service which is being offered now for 3g iphone :(

i dont think i will upgrade from 3g iphone to 3gs now.. will get one from US itself… its costing me 500$ only after contract termination and stuff..

Will get this thing with airtel only if they plan to offer it with bundled 3G service in the future..

  • Nidz

No need to get exicted guys it’s not an official announcement just called up the apple helpline in del the lady there said she had no update and told me to keep checking da apple india site for any info and da apple india site had no info stating that 19th is da launch date..

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    Hi Guys ,

This news is from Croma which is a reputed outlet in Mumbai. I also spoke to a source in Vodafone which unofficially confirmed Sep 20 as launch date.

  • Anonymous

How is this price Horrendous, an iPhone in North America unlocked with no 2 or 3 year locked in contract is the exact same price. If people have a problem with the price they should get off their asses and complain to the government and cell providers to have locked in multi year contracts with penalties for early cancellation so you can get subsidized phones for cheap like the U.S. and Canada.

  • priya

donno abt wat d hell is happenin…weder dis is a rumour or a fact..anywhch ways if any1′s intrsted in a apple iph 3GS 16gb brand new box packed leme know // looneypriya@gmail.com

  • mathen

seems like jus another piece of crap!had enough of this for past one month,am going for iphone 3g itself, will get 3gs when it comes,,ahh too much….

  • Kavir

I guess we cannot take this date to be 100% sure

And the five thousand increase from the iPhone 3G in Mumbai maybe due to the 8.5% pt increase in VAT

Although i had expected a 3K Increase, similiar to the Bold which is now retailing at 34K in Mumbai instead of 31K elsewhere

Lets keep our fingers crossed that the rates at Vodafone and Airtel will be a little less daunting

Hope to see the 3GS released soon.. Iv personally been waiting since April and have almost become overwrought in anticipation of its release..

  • Kaushal

I’m happy to get my iPhone 3GS 32 GB white from grey market. At least I don’t have to wait to get the phone & moreover I can use any sim i want.

  • ankur

No point in speculation, the same thing happened in Aug. It would be better to wait for the official announcement.

  • Ramanand

    Guys,

All rumors about launch in sep 19, until the official date announces i will be not going to believe it.
Please have patience, even i believe it is hard to wait but need to get iphone officially..

  • Zkstuns

I wud definitely go for the 32gb black….but any proof for ur news ?

  • Brijesh

Exactly i second ankur i dont know where these rumours are coming from their websites dont have any trace for the same

  • REETURAJ

thank god its launching here in india v r waiting for this thing for last six month here……

  • REETURAJ

i dont think it launch before nov…….

  • Ryan

Are they out of their minds?! No way I’d spend so much on a phone. We always cursed Microsoft. Apple is a worse monopoly than Microsoft ever was.

  • nostradamus

The phone may be for a whooping 40 grand, but when you resell it a year later (provided you do so a bit before the next iphone’s launch), you would still milk 10-15 g out off the deal. So in a way, you’re parting with just 25 g. Spread that amount over 12 months, and ur renting a 3gs for bit over 2 grand a month. Worth it? app store (awesome games n utilities), jail broken (free downloads, themes, wotevr), exclusive online content, great browser (flash? puh-leez hardly essential), coolness factor.. hmmm …

  • Deb

I was waiting eagerly for 3gs, but it was a long wait, from 9thAug to 19th Sep now. everyday i check twice a day for any updates for the launch. But i think i will not go for 3gs anymore, for me it will be htc hero, smhow i fell that iphone is the present but anroid is the future, have seen a lot of comparison vdos between the 2, and read abt and seen vdos of the available apps on both. Suddenly it seems like a comparison between windows and linux. I guess i will take the less traveled path, price wise both are at par, hero will need a 8gb memory card and so the total cost will be the same as 16gb 3gs. I will wait for HERO!! I suggest you guys take a look at hero’s reviews and vdos too before deciding.

  • Bron

Lol the pricing is totally crap and the the launch date aint official.
Might as well go for the Omnia HD which is around 32k and way better.

  • rAg

    @Nikhil Josh

its ultrasn0w and not yelowsn0w now..

and anyways.. OS 3.1 is expected to roll out soon.. may be even on Sept 9th music event thats gonna take place..

once 3.1 is out and the phone is upgraded to 3.1 ultrasn0w no longer works on it as the baseband is changed and there are loads of patches applied to it covering most of the loop holes.. so even if an unlock is possible it will take lot of time till the new injection hole is found out..

So dont expect to unlock the phone once u r on 3.1 firmware..

    Hey Vikas!

Kudos. I am really beginning to like your coverage of all things related to the Indian mobile sphere. Good stuff and keep up the good work!

  • mediyoga

If we buy an unlocked 3gs i believe it gets locked to the carrier once you sync. is this right? Also updating oS with the risk of bricking the phone prevents me from buying it in the grey market.

  • mediyoga

I am not so confident of the unlock/ jail break procedures which is why I posted my comment above. I am fairly tech savvy but the risk of bricking prevents me . Any ideas?

  • Nidz

@neeturaj – how can that be possible the 3g s was launched only in June so how can you be waiting for it for the last 6 months..

  • Kaushal

    @ tong

I live in mumbai, so I dont really know where to get it in Chennai.

But I have been to chennai a few times…..so my guess would be Spencer Plaza. Try it. Or ask some local friend of yours for information about where to find grey market phones.

  • Prashant

They should come up with some good plan with Vodafone and Airtel, like they have with At & t, i wanted to buy one, but with this price tag i think HTC hero is far better option with almost same features.

Tong-Grey market in chennai is primarily at 3 places (all kind of close to each other)-your best bet to get it is at “Burma Bazaar” which is at Parrys corner and your next best bet is at a place called “Richie Street” which is a stones throw away from Devi theatre, and finally a smaller set of shops is at a place called Parsn Complex which is just after Anna Flyover and right next to the hotel-”The Park”
Hope this helps, and try to have a chennaiite accompany you as autowallas and shop owners alike will rip u off…

  • SANJU

    @Ramp
If you buy from “online Apple store” in Hong Kong, it works in INDIA. No problem at all. But how you’ll buy from “online Apple store”? Any known person should be there becoz apple verify your Credit card details wrt the shipping address. You can use the known person credit card for booking and get the delivery at the same address.

  • Harneet

@Ramp. You’ll be eligible for upgrades and firmware patches if you buy it from The Apple store in Hong Kong. But the warranty does not apply, here in India. It only applies to HK. So if it works, it works. If you find something like a crackling speaker, a broken ringer switch, volume keys malfunctioning, there’ll be no warranties. All you’ll have to rely on, are cell phone repair shops which’re a dime a dozen over anywhere. but if they can’t fix it, you lost your money and ain’t nobody gonna come help. IMO if you’re hell bent on not waiting, HK is your best bet. Hope this helps.

  • rAg

    @ramp

hong kong sells officially unlocked iphones.. so there isnt an hassle with unlocking and stuff.. u can directly use that iphone in india..

  • Raj Hardia

@Ramp – There shouldn’t be any problem in bringing a locked iPhone 3GS from Hong Kong and using it with Indian carriers as there is a software unlock solution available called yellowsn0w.

Though in my opinion if you can find a factory unlocked version, i.e., officially unlocked by apple, that would be the best thing as in my opinion and from my experience you will have to experience less problems in upgrading firmware because as it is well known that upgrading your firmwAre might upgrade your baseband which could possibly lock your device again and you would have to wait for the hacking community to release jailbreaking/unlocking tools for the new firmware. Also using such tools voids your warranty.

I, myself am ordering an unlocked iPhone 3GS 32GB from Australia which is costing me Rs. 47,000. I preferred ordering from abroad as locally the phones that are sold in grey market are used, opened. Also on eBay India the price for the officially unlocked phone is 65,000 rupees.

  • Drew

    @Ramp…

The iPhone purchased from HK will come factory unlocked. You must know that the iPhone even from ATT are “Unlocked”. When you ACTIVATE from iTunes, apple sends the certificates and verifies the udid to your phone is ATT’s or not and if it is without a ATT sim card, it denies your request to ACTIVATE. The HK, france, TIM Italy alike are ones that require ACTIVATION but Apple doesnt verify which carrier you have as the cert comes first due to your unrestricted UDID.

So in short, the HK iPhone will be no problem for you and will work in India or around the world with ease.
    Hope this helps.

  • tong

    @iphone

couldy you tell me the grey market contact number or the detail

    address thanks very much

  • tong

    @ramp

    i am chinese

i can sure to tell you you can not buy iphone 3gs in hongkong right now in offically, maybe next month

the only choice for you is go to grey market in hongkong

    maybe 38000RS for 16GB

  • tong

    @iphone

    first thanks for last one

and are you sure i can buy the iphone 3gs in burma bazaar?

how about the price ? unlock?

if anyone else know something about that ,pLZ tell me

    thanks here

  • Boltress

@Ramp: Yes, you get unlocked iphones in HK. They should be usable easily in India. Ofcourse, you won’t get warranty and etc. for it in India.

  • Aditya

    @Ramp
yes iPhone purchased in Hong Kong can be used in India as its not just without contract but also its not locked to the carrier.
i got this info from the official apple site itself. check it out :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

even if you get an iPhone which is locked to the carrier, it can easily be unlocked & used in India.
Im also planning on getting my 3GS from abroad by mid September..from the US..with full payment. i’ll unlock & use.

    @Mohamed Mothi
even i visited the apple retail store today & was told that the 3GS will definitely cost LESS than what the 3G used to. the lady said it with great confidence :D
so cant be too certain about anything right now.
    Hope for the Best!

  • Aditya

cant wait any longer to own an iPhone 3GS

  • Shyam

Hi all, is it true that iPhone 3GS will be launching thru BSNL as it is the only 3g survice provider.

  • Mohamed Mothi

    @iPhone
In Burma Bazaar 16 GB is sold for 37-38ks and 32 GB for 48k..
its not worth spending so much for it without warranty.
Lets wait for the official launch

  • Ramkumar

40K that to after the budget proposed promising mobile phone prices to go down, is pretty high… though not the same price as in US it should at least be slightly higher but not 8k more than US price.

  • http://www.propertywala.com/ASP/proxy.asp?u=http://www.propertywala.com/ Saurabh

I just bought a iPhone 3GS 32GB officially unlocked/factory sealed for $800 from eBay. Do you think it was a good deal?

  • iphone

is anyone can tell me can i buy the unlocked iphone 3gs in burma bazaar in chennai? what is the price for 16GB ?

    thanks very much

  • Anuj

    @Saurabh
what was the buyer’s ebay id?? and also tell me how much did u pay for the shipping

  • Yogesh

@saurabh in my opinion its best deal u got

  • Nikhil

@Shyam: I sincerely doubt BSNL being the sole carrier. Bharti (Airtel) was given the Phone because it was the one with most customers in India. Vodafone was included as it was a global partner(Egypt, Turkey, Australia etc)

Moreover BSNL is Govt. , and i dont think the GOI has enough funds to push such a product solo. :)

  • http://www.techieblues.com/ Vikas SN

@Asfaq Thanks for the compliments. Coming from you, its a great deal. Thanks a ton mate :)

  • Raj

    @Saurabh
This was a steal at 40,000. By the way, how much did you pay as custom duties? My 32GB factory unlocked version is costing me 47,000, which I’m ordering from Australia. Can you possibly let us know the id of the eBay user.

  • neo

Hey all …. Iphone 3Gs will be sold as unlocked in india just like HK. Also tentative launch will be around October near Diwali.

  • SANGU

I want to buy iPhone 3GS 16GB from Delhi/Noida, Can any body help by guiding/ or giving contact number of the seller.

  • Mothi

    @iPhone
Dude i_phone 3GS is available in EVENING BAZAAR(Also known as C BAZAAR) of Burma bazaar which is opposite to HIGH COURT..
I enquired last week. The price of 16GB is 37500 and 32 GB 47000.
i have no idea about the current price.CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK. They get the mobile from Malaysia/Singapore. Since its the month of RAMZAN(Fasting) People DO not travel abroad. Once Ramzan Gets Over, People will start going to Malaysia/ Singapore and there are GREATER CHANCES OF PRICE GETTING REDUCED. SO I SUGGEST U TO WAIT TILL OCTOBER 1st WEEK. EVEN I’M WAITING

  • http://www.propertywala.com/ Saurabh

    The eBay link is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270450602591

Its seems he had 4 but they are sold out now. I haven’t received the phone yet. I am trying to get it through a friend who is currently in Bangkok so that I can save on shipping and custom duty.

  • Krish

Any idea where unlocked grey market iphones would be available in Pune?
    And at what cost ?

  • Satya

    @Neo,
How can you be so sure about it? Tentative launch..October…
I am becoming Mad of the stupid Speculation. Can’t we hold our horses and wait till it gets announced officially. Aug 09…Aug 19…Aug 28…Sep 02… and now October… Pls stop speculating.

  • Amit

    @ Shyam,

It may be true that BSNL would be the next official carrier for the iPhone in India. Note that there is recent news wherein AT&T is looking to acquire a 25% in BSNL.

With BSNL also being the first mover for 3G services alongwith a wide subscriber base, and given the fact that Apple’s experience in India with Vodafone/ Airtel not being so successful, chances are that BSNL could very well be a preferred carrier.

  • Harneet

@Neo Tere mooh mein ghee shakkar er…:/ Tere fingers pe sonay kee angoothiyaan?

Bring unlocked phones with warranty in India and I’ll buy four for everyone in my family! :D

  • abhishek

sept 19th is just a rumor .. dont think its going to launch at that date.
A more realistic date would be mid october launch.

  • rohit

    @mothi
this problem is recent and apple is not giving it as much attention that battery seems to be overheating but then there are barely 10 phnes that have exploded that compared to the millons of iphone. the company does not think it is serious enough to asl for a recall.. do dont worry if ur phone overheats exhange it for another one..

  • Mothi

    @iPhone
yeah dude 32 GB is sold out for 48000 both in burma bazaar and kasi chetty street, sowcarpet..

    km

  • Krish

    Hey Aditya…..Where are you?
Did you get the 3GS and what was the cost?

Where is it available in Pune?

  • Grako

iPhones sold in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia & thailand are Officially “UNLOCKED”,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937..

so i guess there is no need to open the boxes to unlock them,
& generally the cost of 16GB “3GS” is more than 34000 in these countries.
So taking into account, these are sold for 37000.
difference = 3000, Which includes shipping, bribe to custom officials, their profit.

    Pretty hard to make profit.

So to make more profit, they need to source these from some other country..

    But
As the box are opened to unlock the iPhones, that means they are locked to a carrier, that means, Grey market guys, get these handsets from somewhere, where price is subsidized, & phone can be bought without any fuss, like signing a contract in the stores itself (in USA), that’s why iPhones is not imported from USA, nowadays… ‘ coz it’s not possible..

Wonder which country they import it from ?

Do u guys have any idea ?

  • Grako

It’s Indonesia, their iPhone 3GS 16GB is for 30,500 & locked to carrier.

So, they have 6,500 to distribute between Profit, shipping, bribe.

  • http://www.technobuzz.net Raj

    Hi to All.

Its Going to Be Launched in October Mid, and I think its Confirmed.

So wait for one Month More. And price is Near About 36k for 16 GB and 41k for 32 GB.

  • Sharad

    @Raj

Raj, what is your source of news? Please enlighten us so that we can all hold our horses of rumors till then ;-)

  • Aditya

@all those interested in buying the 3GS in Pune
i know 3 shops which all selling the new iPhone for sure. not exactly selling but can make it available in an hour or two hours notice.

theres a shop called 1) Digital World in Sagar Arcade, FC road
another one something called as 2) Sony World (i think..) on JM road, diagonally opposite Pizza Hut..its next to a small little place called Pearl Hotel.
    3) third shop i dont know where it is, but a friend of mine knows him n spoke to him on the phone..he has.
all these guys will get it from the grey market.

n 1 more thing..the grey market prices keep on fluctuating, on Sunday it was 37,500/- for 16GB 3GS..Monday increased by 1k. today (Tuesday) also the price is high. going to get higher now because of Moharram as new stock is not coming in. im going to buy if its available for around 38k.
i heard last week demand was low so price had gone down to as low as 34,000/- (low only for an iPhone :P )

maybe if 3 or 4 of us go together to a particular shop we can get a very good deal. or the prices might shoot further more cause of the demand. who knows!
very long post…sorry about that. i’ll keep you people updated.

  • Nidz

Apple has its eye on India. This information came in a pre-event pep talk in London from Apple’s European boss Pascal Cagni, who talked about the mobile opportunity there. Apple’s plans for iPhone in India will be worth watching.

    http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/34301/Apples-Its-only-rock-and-roll-launch-the-ME-take

  • km

    @Nidz

    thsxz for the link…

“Apple’s plans for iPhone in India will be worth watching.”

this statement is in itself a NEWS that something big is coming our way otherwise Apple wouldn’t have given such a statement.

    Lets wait and watch.

    km

  • Richee

Apple may launch iphone 3GS in India with 3.0.1 firmwire but the worst part is it may not allow jailbreak or unlock ever again.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sumitsharma Sumit Sharma

Well Well Well, I have some news here. Apple is perhaps not tying up with any telecom partner (Airtel or Vodafone or BSNL) and will sell the iPhone directly from its authorized retailers chain, just like its others products. Apple Online Catalogue for India is currently uploading while I type it for you all. Watch Out.

  • Grako

    iPod touch 32GB (18400) + [ Phone Chip + GPS ] = 36000 (iPhone n that too locked)

Is a Phone chip + GPS worth Rs. 18000 ???
    It’s just over kill.

Apple’s just looting everyone in the world !!!

  • Bhavs23

I want to sell my iPhone 3G Black 16GB…in mint condition..anyone interested?

  • Grako

    Update…

    iPod touch 32GB (18400) + [ Phone Chip + GPS + camera + compass] = 36000 (iPhone n that too locked)

    Is a [ Phone Chip + GPS + camera + compass] worth Rs. 18000 ???
    It’s just over-kill.

Apple’s just looting everyone in the world !!!

    but hey….
I’m still gonna buy iPhone 3GS !!!, even though it’s not fair.

  • Raj Hardia

I will die if apple happens to sell unlocked versions in India. I already have ordered an unlocked 32GB iPhone from Australia for 51,000 rupees.

  • Nidz

    @km – ur most welcome…

Yeah fingers crossed .. Hope we get some good news real soon !!

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    @Nidz

There are also some rumors that Apple might go the unlocked way in India and price the phone higher and say okthxbye to both Airtel and Vodafone :)

  • http://www.twitter.com/sumitsharma Sumit Sharma

@ Raj Hardia Its time you die, because I can bet you that it is selling unlocked iPhones in India.

    Reason:

    1. Neither Vodafone nor Airtel has 3G spectrum in India as of now and it would take, even if fastest, then too at least 6 to 8 months before the bidding is done and 3G is operational on either of those.
    2. BSNL is a poorest performing telecom company in the mobile and internet section of the telecom sector in India, and not that its very cheap either and Apple is in no mood to lose its credibility by partnering and relying on it.
    3. Its already more than 3 months since Indian buyers are waiting for the iPhone 3Gs and patience is running down as Nokia, Blackberry, Samsung and a couple of others are ready too woo the buyers with their latest offerings which indeed are quite competitive. Considering that it would lose the potential buyers to the above mentioned companies, Apple certainly is in no mood to wait for those 8 months before 3G is operational by private partners.

Relying on FoneArena, the date is fixed for 19th. Let’s see if we have some good news on the updated catalogue on apple.co.in

  • Apple Insider

    @Sumit Sharma

The apple online India store is updating their catalog for the just release new range of iPods… nothing else..
    Sorry to disappoint you…

  • sachu

Guys apple iphone 3gs is now shown in india page. but for now where to buy button is not working i think. anyway for me. so go check it out. finally its here. i think its glad news to all.

    http://www.apple.com/in/iphone/iphone-3g-s/

  • http://www.propertywala.com/ Saurabh

@sachu: That page has been there since the launch.

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

that page still shows 3G in most places . and yes been then for like EVER

  • Nidz

@varun – I have this feeling that apple will suprise us with the pricing it won’t be that high like what we are expecting.. They will do this to have a better market then what they had with the 3g and also this will kill the competition !

I hope my feeling is correct.. And yeah unlocked phones will be cool but to be honest for me it doesn’t make much diff whether the phone is locked to airtel or vodafone ..

  • drool

    @sachu

lol …. good morning sachu …. n thanks for the breaking news …. it is glad news to all indeed lloll.

    @nidz

lloll…continue with the feelings n dreaming thing till June 2010 n then i gotta feeling by black eyed peas that Apple will launch a new iphone 64GB at WWDC lloll.

  • drool

    @ nidz

lol… hey nidz I gotta feeling that maybe Apple will send Santa Claus with the iphone 3GS on the 25th of Dec to surprise you…lolololol.

  • http://www.atularora.com Atul

Bhavs, how much are you expecting for 3G ?

Sumit, what’s your point here ? You said BSNL is worst, Airtel/Vodafone will take forever to provide 3G. What are the options left for Apple then ?

  • drool

    @ nidz

lol… nidz as Apple wants to capture the Indian market santa will also surprise you with the pricing as he will offer u a flat 50% discount … but if you want you can still bargain with him …lololol

  • Joffin

Airtel CC today told that they may launch 3GS at the end of this month they dont have any confirmed news, i m not going to believe that :( . Apple Sucks!!!!!!!!

  • rAg

I still hope the phone to be launched in october.. by that time airtel and vodafone might start their 3G service and iphone might be offered with a bundled 3G service instead of the age old EDGE or GPRS

It would be a great deal that way. Its only a matter of one month but will be a huge benefit.. and i really dont mind using my 3g iphone till then coz i used 3gs for 2 weeks and 3gs is not much advanced compared to 3g, yeah its fast but thats not something u need to upgrade for spending 35k odd when u already own a 3g!!

  • Apple Insider

    @rAg

Airtel and Vodafone are looking for October 2010 to launch their 3G service not the coming October… So that way we might have to wait till next year for Airtel & Vodafone to launch 3GS phone with bundled 3G service

  • ramona

i think all this speculation is getting ridiculous by the day..3G will not see the light of day this year for sure..with the auction of the spectrum being delayed..

there are only two options from here

    1. india will not see the iphone 3GS launch(unlikely)
    2. apple will introduce unlocked handsets at a higher price

  • Sachu

sorry guys..i thought 3gs was not shown in apple india site so far.. by the way here is a doubt i have got..plz help

a frnd of mine who sells iphones says that he got 3 iphones from US i think, and these 3 cannot be unlocked it seems. he says its some other operator lock and they can unlock it. my questions is ” is there any un-unlockable iphones like that??”
    they r iphone3g not 3gs.

i was looking out to buy an ipod touch and was waiting for the camera. But as u know, since no camera came out i thot not to buy it. but then this seller told he is giving out these locked iphones for 8000rs. So for me it will be the camera ipod touch i wanted and if there is an unlock, may be i can do that as well. i have macbook. i hope we can unlock using macbook. is it?

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

MAy be its iphone 3.1 ?

  • http://www.atularora.com Atul

    Sachu,

Can you pls. let me have the contact details of that guy who is offering locked 3G. I need to buy it.

    Cheers.

  • Sachu

No varun, they r not 3.1
its been with him for 2-3 months…so can it be unlocked..i think i should buy it?? so i can hav a touch with cam and if possible touch with cam ??
for a guy who is not worried about cam and video 3g and 3gs wont be a big diff right..performance difference is not tht big deal i guess..

  • Sachu

    @ Atul
the locked 3g is not to indian operators..its locked to some foreign country..US i guess..

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

lol 8k is a steal . but not clear why he is selling for less ?

  • Sachu

apple site is down now?? and catalogues r being updated..its 12th already..hmmm..does tht mean its time to say i..ip..iph..ipho..yey iphone is here…

  • Sachu

ok..apple is bad..i jus saw the ipod prices and they r jaw dropping
check these prices in US and India

    product US rate Indian rate

    ipod touch 8gb 9631 12400 before tax
    ipod touch 16gb 12051 18400 before tax
    ipod touch 32gb 19312 24400 before tax

    source: apple online store site
now everybody know iphone 3gs price is $199 there which is rs9631.
now just imagine how much its gonna cause here.

and yeah, apple actually slashed ipod touch prices there which they announced in the event. But here prices went up. whom should i congratulate for this mercy on us …eghhh !!!!

  • Sachu

    slight change
instead of 16gb ipod its 32 gb whose american price is 14441 while india 18400 before tax.

and instead of 32gb its 64gb. but the price listed is correct.

sorry for the mistake i made..was too excited to post the comment.

  • ankit

Chinese knock-offs , KIRF’s for sure…there isnt any network in the world that can stop an iPhone from getting unlocked…no such thing as an un-unlockable iphone.

  • Bhavs

@ Atul…my 16GB 3G is locked to Airtel…I don’t have any ideas abt what to quote actually…you tell me how much? I have the bill and dock and everything!

  • http://www.atularora.com Atul

@ Victor, can you let me have your no. I’ll call you for your 3GS. My no: 99101-62621

  • http://www.atularora.com Atul

@ Bhavs, can you let me have your no. or call me at: 99101-62621

  • Sachu

bhavs, since its licked to airtel and 3g version, I dont think it wud go out for big amount..if its less than 20k, i shall buy it.

  • Atul

    @ Bhavs

    How about Rs.15000?

  • Grako

    iPod touch US 32GB pricing:
    $321 =15550 includes tax

    iPod touch 32GB India pricing:

    18400 includes tax

    Difference:
    2850

That means for every Rs.1000 spent in US, we pay a 1184 in India.
    Now,

iPhone 32GB US (Locked, No contract) pricing:
    $643 =includes tax = 31150

Now for iPhone 32GB India pricing:

    31150*1.184 =Rs.36890

That means iPhone 3GS 32GB (Locked, No contract) india pricing = Rs.36,900/-
    that’s for Airtel

& hoping Vodafone will charge Rs.1,500 less, same as 2008.

    Airtel’s price=36,900/-
    Vodafone’s price=35,400/-

Now Apple, Airtel, Vodafone CEO’s might be thinking, if only 2000 people bought iPhone 3G @ 31,100/- in 2008.

How many will buy iPhone 3GS @36,900/- in 2009 ?????????

Compare this with Unlocked HongKong price 33,700/- (Tax free)

    Don’t forget, Samsung Omnia HD 16GB @31000 & Nokia N900 @36000, X6 which will be priced at around 29,500.

  • Grako

One dis-advantage for Consumers, of buying iPhone, is that it’s price doesn’t decrease with time.
as through Airtel, iPhone bought in January’2009, will cost same in October’2009.

but if it’s sold in open market, it’s price will decrease with time, due to various factors, such as new product launches from other company’s, competition between different dealers, in a same area.

I mean, you just can’t bargain, for this phone.
    Take-it OR Leave-it.

It’s just bad for Indian Consumers.

aur sone pe suhaga, it’s Locked, even after paying more than Thirty five thousand rupees……

  • Sachu

    @ Grako

Thts some real good math and good view on the current scenario of iphone in India..lets wait n see…

  • Ankur

    @bhavs
I’m also interested in buying your iphone 3g…
give me ur contact no or call me at 9871528377..

  • http://www.atularora.com Atul

@ Bhavs, Someone who’s also interested (like me) in buying your phone has posted a comment “using my name” offering you 15K for it. Pls. ignore it. If I have to make you an offer, I’d call you, that’s why I asked you for your contact no.

I didn’t know there are backstabbers surfing this website too :-(
This is sheer stupidity. That’s why we Indians are considered low profile in western countries. For a mere few thousand bucks, cheapsters like the one who used my name to post bring poor name to the entire nation. Too bad !!

  • http://www.atularora.com Atul

@ Bhavs, Furthermore, the intention of that guy is to use my name to offer you a low price of 15K and then use his real identity to make you a slightly offer hoping that you’re too naive and would sell it to him. Hold onto your phone buddy, it’s worth at least 22-23K. Don’t go for anything less than that.

  • vankoo

i am goin to buy a iphone 3gs 32gb officially unlocked and sealed from grey market tomorrow.. it will cost me 51k. totally f…ked up and frustrated cos of its delay in launching..

  • Raj Hardia

waY to go vankoo. I did the same, though I ordered from Australia. It’s costing me 47,000 for 32GB+4000 for shipping. The kind seller marked the package as gift for me.

  • Arun

    @Raj Hardia

Who is this seller from Australia?? I mean is he a online shop owner or an individual? Even I wud like to get one from him if he is shipping to India. And do we have to pay customs here to get the product?

  • rAg

    @raj harida

dude it doesnt matter if u declare it as gift or anything.. sadly the customs people are not so dumb man.. they know the prices of all these gadgets and charge u the customs duty..

i got a phone shipped from US.. my fren took it with contract for 200$ initially so he even kept a copy of the bill and declared it as a gift and sent it to me..

the bloody customs people still charged me 4.5k as customs duty for the phone.. the took a valuation of 26k which i still wonder about.. and charged me around 14.5% customs duty which is the actual amount they need to charge..

if at all they get to know the phone u purchased is for 51k then they will rip u off with a huge amount as customs duty..

and added to that they took 12 days to clear it man!! its so damn frustrating..

  • Zkstuns

Guys my brother is going to new zealand next week . there it is subsidised to $ NZ 599 which is locked . So please tell me if i purchase it from there can i unlock it and use it here ?

  • Kavir

    Any further official confirmations??!!

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    Not yet

  • Raj Hardia

    @rag
thanks for the info but you should learn to spell people’s name properly. And yeah I’m ready for a amount like 4.5 k and I highly doubt they’ll be charging me in excess of that.

    @Arun
the seller was from eBay Australia. Ishop-88
though as rag confirmed, you are most probably liable to pay custom duty.
but you are really really lucky I should say. eBay India has started it’s service called globaleasybuy where they let us buy items(Inc. Electronics) from US at no extra custom charges. The shipping and etc. charges are all combined in the price shown. Basically the item first ships to an international reseller from the actual seller and the int’l reseller ships to you.

Last time I checked they had iPhone 32GB for 51,000 rupees. (how coincidential?)

  • rAg

    @Raj Hardia

oops!! sorry dude.. it was a typo error :)

  • Anonymous

Well iv been waiting for the iphone 3gs since quiet a long time…… I hope the date’s confirmed this time…

  • Suren

Please, Somebody confirm a valid source for iphone launching on 19th September 2009.

  • Raj Hardia

    @rAg
    It’s perfectly fine now. :-)
so the phone that you got shipped was 3GS or 3G? Is it really fast, the 3GS? even after installing tons of apps? right now I have 3G and it’s gotten pretty slow. ( I have eight pages of apps.)

  • Brijesh

no way the iphone 3GS gonna launch this 19 sep no clue no trace…..
yet again the same rumourslike for august spoiling the excitement

  • Apple Insider

    Hello all,

19th September, as I said earlier, is just another rumors buzzing on the net… if it has to 19th septemeber, apple and Indian carrier would have started their advertisement by now..

  • KK

The price point at which it will be sold is too much..
will it be carrier-locked or unlocked..?? any idea?

    KK

  • Mothi

No ways. iPhone 3G S will not be launched this month for sure..
when i called up and asked the iStore, they said that they’re expecting it by mid of next month

  • Raj Hardia

One thing people can do as I mentioned earlier Is buy the 3GS from eBay india’s GlobalEasyBuy. It’s just launched. Last time I checked there was a 3GS 16GB for 35,000. You won’t pay any custom tax on that.

  • Zkstuns

Yeah thats wat seems to be the case .. i went to digital world in sagar arcade on FC road in Pune . . He told me that the 32 gig was for 46000 and 16 gig was for 38000…so if apple doesn’t release it anytime soon . . i am gonna buy it from here . .

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    @Raj Links please :-)

  • http://www.propertywala.com/ Saurabh
  • Raj Hardia
  • rAg

    @ Raj Hardia

i got a 3GS dude.. yeah its much faster than 3g.. you can easily notice the difference in speed especially when ur iphone is loaded with apps, 3g wont perform as good as a 3gs.. there isnt even a time delay when we type on using virtual keypad for searching in cydia, but in 3g its a big pain to search in cydia..

but anyways i am planning to get one officially with airtel this time, thats the reason i sold off my 3gs for a hefty price and waiting eagerly now.. :D

  • Raj Hardia

If you read the FAQ, it clearly states that all charges incl. Duty are in the price listed.

  • Bhavs

@ Atul, John & Ankur, guys i have taken down your numbers…I will probably call u over the weekend…

@Sachu, I am definately not selling my phone for 20k or less…anyone who will see my phone can never say that it was actually used…its in such nice condition with a scratch guard and plus i always keep it in a pouch

  • Aaron Lee

    @ Raj
Even though the prices are 36K and so on, the S&H(Shipping and handling) is average around 6500rs. So when you think you’re paying 36K, the total comes upto around 42K.

    Hello,

I have bought iPhone 3GS in Europe with T-mobile contract, but when I am back to India, is it possible to get it unlocked ? ( i am hoping this is possible). Dont want to pay heavy roaming charges to T-Mobile.

I have one more question, does iPhone supports GPS in india also ? does it show where on the map a person stand or route planner.

I asked too many questions! I have seen, iPhone 3 GS is having double speed than iPhone 3G and has 3.2 Mega pixel camera instead of 2 Mega pixel(3G) and it supports video also.

  • Bhavs

@ Ajay…dude Duh! I think every one of us here in the forum knows each and every difference between the iPhone 3G and 3GS!!!

  • Joffin

    @Vikas SN

    Any new updates????

  • rAg

any update guys.. if they are planning to sell it tomorrow they would atleast have the stock ready right?? anyone with high level contacts with airtel guys can confirm the news??

  • iPhone lover

    @Vikas SN,

I think it is now Vikas SN’s responsibility to get updates on possible launch of iPhone on 19th Sep 09, as he is the one who posted this

  • Harneet

Guys, my friend’s selling a legally unlocked 8gig black iPhone he purchased in November last year from Vodafone. He shot an email to customer care that he’s going back home to The U.S. in december and got it legally unlocked from Vodafone itself, within the next four hours lol. He wants to sell it now and there’s like, two months or so of warranty on it, still. What’s the best price he’ll get for it, because he says that a legally unlocked phone with a warranty of an Indian carrier(albeit two months) will fetch him a nice offer. What do you guys think?

  • Ramesh

Hi all, anybody have good contacts with BSNL admin. As I understood from one of the BSNL employee that they almost finalised the talks with Apple for iPhone 3GS. He said it will be launched on 16th October as Diwali and its subsidised and the customer has to locked with BSNL for 2yrs contract. If this come true, we have to hear “ALL THE LINES U R TRYING IS PRESENTLY BUSY!! PLZ TRY AFTER SOMETIME” caller tone :-(

  • rAg

One of my fren knows a guy who is a distributer for vodafone. It seems that the launch has been postponed to October 2nd week. They are postponing the launch on purpose it seems :(

So i think it will be launched on diwali itself as many of them were pointing out..

  • Pal

Hi all curious to know about 3GS launch, here is some news. Apple is not in a position to launch this model in India this year due to horrendous demand in US and other countries it’s been launched. Also the preparation for festive season in US has made Apple make this decision to delay launch till Jan 10.

  • A

A source from Airtel assures that they aren’t launching anytime before October/ November…

Still not sure about the croma bit of news tho…

  • Seshu

    @ Ramesh

If it is tru then Apple is doing another big mistake. this time nobody dare to take iPhone even though subsidized thru BSNL, bcoz of their network issues.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sumitsharma Sumit Sharma

Unitechy has deceived us with wrong information. And we are doomed once again. What the heck is wrong with apple, they are losing out on customers this way. Most of my friends have already got themselves Nokia N97, and I am on the verge to buy ‘Bose’ speakers the money I’d saved for iPhone. Abhi bhi time hai, ask them to release it before Durga Puja or at least before Diwali.

  • rohit

just bought the iphone 3GS today it doesn sync with itunes though and you cant download the new update beacause it cancels the jailbreaking software…

  • Raj Hardia

    @rAg
that’s great to know, thanks. Gets me even more excited.

Now, I don’t think 3GS is gonna get a proper launch in India anytime too soon.
    Reasons,

    1. Media especially the dumb and backward Hindi news channels have had created negative publicity about the iPhone 3G’s price in India vs USA(which was wrong in it’s entirety) back in 2008. Many people saw this entirely unfair and chose to ignore the iPhone.
This resulted in poor sales both for vodafone and airtel.

    2. The subsidy, contract-based plans cannot work in India. People in the US have extraordinarily high call rates in comparison to that in India.
Even if they do bring it here(the plan pricing of $65/month= 3100), it will be too high for the average or even the high-end mainstream mobile user. We in India prefer prepaid solution vs the postpaid solution in the US.

    3. Now coming to the cost, apple treats the whole world almost the same pricewise. The myth that iPhone is overpriced in India is entirely false. The mobile operator companies couldn’t be able to reach a deal as the they saw a heavy loss with the iPhone 3G and apple is probably too stubborn to listen to them to reduce the price. It wants it’s revenue and thus a deal could not be made.

If 3G sales were better, 3GS wouldn’t become such a dream.

  • Arun

I got my new iphpone 3gs….guys its awesome….i got the officially unlocked mob and have updated to 3.1 without any problems…

  • Pankaj

its been a very long time now and still no update as of now..
friends i would sugggest you one thing that u can purchase an iphone from hongkong reason is that apple is officaly selling unlocked version of iphone in hongkong and its ready to use handset just enter any sim card connect it to itunes and your phone will be officialy activated by apple server.. so jailbreak no hacking nothing like that….

if any of ur frds or relatives is in hong kong then u can arrange an unlocked version at cheap price rather than buying jailbroken handset.

    ——————————————————————-
iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS purchased at the Hongkong Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and connect to
iTunes 8.2 to complete activation.2 Purchase limitations may apply.

  • Arvind

    Hey Guys,

Even i am an iphone fan. I “thought” that no other phone can even come near to it in terms of the usability it offers, tough not on the features front. But my perception has changed after seeing Nokia N900. Please check out the promo video on YouTube. Its brilliant. The difference this time is, its working with a Linux OS(Maemo 5). The touch experience too is smooth and fast(like the iphone). Its going to be released in Oct 2nd week in india priced at about 35-36K. I had my plans of buyin a 3GS, but after this, i want to compare these phones and then go in for the kill:-) I’m just waiting for the launch of these two phones.

  • Anonymous

Raj got busy with his iphone it seems.

  • Anirudh

Hey guys i am an Indian but living in Buenos aires right now. Will ne home for Diwali. I was also waiting for the phone so desperately here. The finally launched it here in end aug bur the phone was being sold only unlocked. Anyway I went and bought the phone from the grey market here but it cost me like 1260 USD for the white 16 gb it’s like 65k I paid for this thing but it’s been worth it and I am so happy, it’s really sad to see apple not launching the phone in india yet. Hope all u guys get it soon.

  • yogesh

However what I interpret from our conversation is:

India isn’t in their top priority list. Apple iPhone 3GS launch could be delayed by months if negotiations with Vodafone n Bharti doesn’t fall through anytime soon.

Major concerns raised by Vodafone n Bharti are:

Limited market size of few hundred phones.
Near 50% of early adopters n iPhone fans have already brought from Grey market.(similar to original iPhone case in 2007)
Without 3G and poor internet usage, there is no compelling reason for upgrades. Unlike other countries, average data traffic via iPhone have been low in India.
Poor PC and Internet penetration. Many iPhones still running on v1 firmware.
Indian market specific issues like lack of file sharing, poor speaker volume and other miscl reasons.

Hence they aren’t willing to agree on Apple’s demands which include:

    Committed volumes for cheaper pricing
Cheaper n more attractive data n voice plans and better EDGE networks
Apple is unhappy about the way iPhone 3G was promoted. (Blackberry storm was given a better push)
Unlike Nokia and many others which are carrier independent, iPhone is locked to network and thus operator’s offerings has a major impact on sales.

Moreover, Both parties aren’t eager because:

Studies shows that high end phone sales essentially doesn’t translate to bigger usage bills.
Indian Market is unfamiliar to Apple and it’s content delivery model which includes iTunes
High end phone sales have been driven by social status n peer pressure demands and most features (areas were iPhone excel) remains poorly used.

Thus iPhone 3GS launch depends on how soon both parties arrive at a deal. It seems shortage of stocks isn’t a concern and the real issue is at what rates operators will buy from Apple which in-turn depends on the volume that operators can commit on.

Bottom-line is that iPhone 3GS launch won’t come anytime soon unless we get really lucky.

My good friend also hinted on a possibility of coupling Apple 3GS launch with 3G network services launch which is currently under testing.

Now all this is disappointing. Till today I hoped every upcoming Friday could be a possibility. Oh, I really hope what I heard is wrong and that those guys hv already finalized the negotiations. However, there is no question of switching sides. I would rather wait than go for N97

  • Pankaj

Its been a long wait here in India for iPhone fans to get hold of iPhone 3GS. There has been no news about its launch date though Apple had said Aug 2009. With just 3 days left, an August launch looks impossible. Major tech websites have been spinning up launch dates beginning August 9 to Sept 18.

I got a chance to convince an old friend of mine to get some information on what could be the reasons for delay. As a well placed insider he does know the dates but wouldn’t disclose the same due to obvious reasons.

However what I interpret from our conversation is:

India isn’t in their top priority list. Apple iPhone 3GS launch could be delayed by months if negotiations with Vodafone n Bharti doesn’t fall through anytime soon.

Ya agree with bhavik , its all copy pasted

  • Bhavik

    @Aaron,

Well whether it should not or it should is not the problem here. Whats the point to put a already published article/blog on some other site. if its so important just give a link. any ways.. why are we even discussing this.. the point here to discuss is iPhone 3GS launch.. and not what matters and what doesnt :)

no hard feelings @aaron and @pankaj.

  • Varun

@bhavik — this blog is for information sharing and its very funny u r taking it to copyright matter lolzz — if pankaj copied from somewhere then it doesn’t matter

i have visited the airtel store in faridabad & they have published the huge banner of iphone 3gs in which it is written that iphone 3gs is coming soon by airtel,i got confirmed from store manager & he confirmed that iphone will be avilable from diwali on all airtel stores across india & will launch in 3-4 days i.e. in first week of october,he has not confirmed the price. This is confirmed news not any rumours or fake report.cheers for all iphone fans

  • rohil

guys i am also jus bugged up dese news , i am goin to buy hk

  • siddharth

ha ha ha agreed with Varun…

Bhavik just chill yaar and enjoy the blog…..lolzz

  • siddharth

hey buddy please dont spread rumours unless u have a solid source behind the news …. i am dam sure iphone 3gs will not come in 3 days and ur news is fake…

  • Aaron Lee

Haha true. None taken. Credit’s must be given.
I’m frankly tired over waiting for the launch. People with their fake dates and false hopes. I think i’m just going to settle for a Nokia 5530 XM, pretty cheap and good. Although it lacks 3G and GPS, but then again, i don’t really need that in India.
Btw, do we have any Iphone programmers here? Cocoa touch or Objective – C?

  • Pankaj

@Amit Parmar : great news buddy lets hope on this diwali iphone 3GS will be out…

  • jatin

hey amit, are u sure it will be launched all over india on diwali???
Cs it doesnt matter if its launched through airtel or vodafone.
Because all of us will be jailbreakin it n unlockin it i guess??
CS jailbreakin gives us the option of bluetooth file sharin which according to me is the ONLY drawback in the iphone!
so if you could pls confirm the news v all would be greatfull!

  • Sam

    @Amit Parmar
well i hav askd here in airtel store dey said dey hav no updates yet.. can u plz mention ur state???

  • Anu

Amit if dats d case y aren’t airtel advertising it on their website and y only in a store and that even in faridabad…i m sure its fake.

  • Zkstuns

@Amit Parmar: Can u post a hoto of the banner which u have seen as a proof . . .Sorry dude , but we here are tired of the rumours and just need some kinna proof !

  • Zkstuns

  • Ankit

My God What a discussion going in here for iPhone 3GS :)

Well whenever it may be coming, I just want the price in 20k’s line.

If not, I don’t think its worth investing in 3GS for more than 30k as Apple might be ready to get another version of it next year in US. N then we will die for that 1 to come to India.

So I think grey market is best, atleast you get the piece when its newly launched and also have good resale value in India until a next version is out! ;)

  • Pankaj

well i agree with Anu if there will be any chances of iphone 3gs launch in india then firstly it will come on vodafone and airtel website coz this is the first way of communication i think….

  • Atul

    @ jatin

who the hell told you that if u jailbreak the iphone you can start file sharing with bluetooth…lol

  • Amit Parmar

i dont know man why they r not advertising,i also wanna buy as quickly as posssible,so i dont wat to say any fake reports, airtel confirmed that i will be avialable from diwali,i dont know abt the vodafone.

  • Amit Parmar

ya jatin i do confirm the news as i had personally visited the airtel store in faridabad,i havent seen any banner of iphone 3gs anywhere except in sec-15,the branch manager aloso confirmed me that it will be available thsi diwali at all airtel stores,i also wanna buy ASAP dude

  • Amit Parmar

    yeah in sec-15,faridabad(haryana)

  • Amit Parmar

yeah i will try that dude, when it is possible for me to go i will sure do that for all of us

  • Amit Parmar

yeah dude i have beeen waiting for 3gs from alst 3 months

  • nanda

stop spreading rumours its not getting launched in india this year cos i work for a network company

  • Raj

    @Atul

There is no need to lol, there is an application called ibluetooth that enables file sharing!!!

Can’t believe people can be so ignorant so as to leave sarcastic and hostile remarks.

  • Sid

@Atul — buddy Jatin has just communicated the information which is useful for others, u first try to google ibluetooth application & see what it can do then put any comment against that person…

everyone has right to say — so plz dont use sarcastic comments let it be a good thread

  • rAg

@all u guys talking abt ibluetooth

when u know so much abt it u also should know that its not compatible with 3gs yet :P

  • jatin

@rag…ya i din know that ibluetooth is not compatible with 3gs but i am sure in some time a similar app will b launched 4 3gs too..as v all know..jailbreakin d iphone makes it a phone imposible 2 beat(this was 4 ppl who think not being able 2 share files over bluetooth is a BIG drawback of d iphone!)
But lets just hope pray n wish dat v get d 3gs soon!
    But guys 1 advice 4m me 2 u all!
If u r even thinkin abt buyin sum other phone then plz dont! Because i know there are lots of gud phones in d market n sum r cumin, but believe me guys after usin an iphone u wudnt want 2 use ne oder phone!!

  • Pankaj

i have used other touch phones like nokia , htc , LG cookie but i must say iPhone is simply great when it comes to touch technology…. no one can beat it …. will wait for iphone 3GS …

  • Joffin

    Hi Guys

At last I bought a Samsung Jet and i ll buy one Ipod touch third generation total 19500+18500 Now I got two devices for the iphone price.

Now I love my Samsung Jet its an excellent mobile.

  • Zkstuns

Guys shud i buy it from the grey market ? Will it be fake or something like that ? will it gimme any problems later ? Can i update it via itunes ?

  • Anonymous

you can buy the phone from grey market but be carefull as cheap duplicate versions of chinese iphone are also there, about the phone giving you problems well buddy it totally depends on luck some give problems and some dont and you cannot update it via itunes as it will get locked then

  • Zkstuns

So that means i will get a jailbroken version in the grey market. . . okay. . .So then wat are the potential risks ? Should i wait or go for it ? please suggest me guys !

  • Fenix

    Hey folks ,

I am just a buyer like u intenting to purchase iphone 3gs but alas we still r in a dark room and dont know where to look for .

I am from Chandigarh and had a conversation with one of the Airtel top notch official . Can`t give out his Job profile or name and the way he was talking seemed like to be knowing a lot of stuff .
He said that as per a survey 60% of the iphone in India are from Grey market and They could only sell less than 200 phones in Noth region . The main reason is that simple functions are missing and in comparison Blackberry were selling like hot cakes . He also said that the price is too high and cellphone under 20k category sell better in India and Nokia has a tight grip in the Indian market . Currently Airtel and Vodafone in talks with Apple about the Duty/plans/Profit sharing . He said that it might be after post Diwali that we would get to know about the Launch . He said that might be Mid November / He said that they burnt their fingers with the iphone 3g and dont want the same to happen again .
The left over iphone more than 50000 were sold by Airtel and Vodafone outside India.
He suggested me to rather purchase a blackberry .
LoLzzz . Let see wat happens .

  • Fenix

If anybody wants to get an unlocked he can get it from Hongkong or Australia by ebay for 42k -16gb model and 50k for 32gb model and shipping is a bomb like for 5k but i still would wait for one month .

  • rAg

Guys dont even think of buying a phone from grey market.. here are the disadvantages..

Apple has started a new security check for iphone 3gs which will disable users from restoring to 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware.. So as of now u can only restore to 3.1 firmware.. The problem here is that if at all by any chance your iphone crashes when it is on 3.0. or 3.0.1 then there is no way u can restore your iphone back to 3.0 or 3.0.1 and unlock it coz u can only restore to 3.1 and as of now 3.1 has no unlock and your iphone will be locked down..

The only way you can restore to 3.0 or 3.0.1 is to bypass apple server check by redirecting it to saurik’s server(DEV team member helping us all) but for this you need to already have the IBEC and IBSS files generated for your iphone and updated with saurik server. And this should have been done before 3.1 was released coz there is no way u can get them now as far as i know (not so sure abt this)..

All your future jailbreak and unlock will be related to these files.. If you dont have them then you might never be able to jailbreak or unlock your iphone..

You might be thinking that u can use the new pwnage tool and upgrade to 3.1 safely without upgrading the baseband but pwnage also is giving lot of problems.. there have been a vast number of cases where u get a 1604 or 1600 error while upgrading and your iphone will be looping into recovery mode even when u restart it.. so its basically bricked and u have no option except to use an original 3.1 firmware which locks you iphone again.. The problem is with the custom firmware generated which is causing this error somehow..

So think about all this before going for a 3gs from grey market.. Get an officially unlocked phone if you wish to but dont go for a software unlocked phone at all..

  • Aaron Lee

    @Zkstuns,
    First off, awesome name.
I suggest you opt for a grey market iphone, cause if you don’t, you’re gonna be waiting for a long long time buddy. Try and get those with warranty, (you get those types on ebay), and you’re good to go.
I know heera panna is charging around 40K for the iphone 3gs without warranty. You can get one with warranty for maybe around 45,000 on ebay.

  • Anonymous

well some people posted in this thread before that they got officialy unlocked iphones also which mean u can update it from itunes and use it with any carrier check older comments to see where they got it from some shipped it from australia its all there in comments elsewise you will get a jail breaked phone which you cannot update/ should not update with no warranty personally i would not go for it as spending 40,000 and buying a phone which turns out to be brick after a while and nowhere to go, its big loss if you ask me

  • Sharad

In grey market what you get is unlocked (or firmware hacked) iphone which allows any sim to work. Jailbroken means you can install any App developed for iPhone even it is not from App Store of iPhone. The biggest risk of buying unlocked phone from grey market is that once you update your firmware through itunes, it will lock phone again and you will not be able to use any sim of your choice. However, if the phone is officially unlocked (unlocked by Apple itself or authorized service provider from Apple) then you can update firmware from iTunes with no worries. Currently, Hongkong and Australia are few of the countries where Apple is selling officially unlocked iPhones. So, on places like ebay if the seller is selling officially unlocked iPhone from Hongkong or Australia then its a good buy.
Hope it will help you to understand the difference between jailbroken, unlocked and officially unlocked iPhone.

  • rAg

    @Aaron Lee

what do u exactly mean by with warranty dude?

iPhone carries a valid warranty in india only if u purchase it with airtel or vodafone in india..

all iphones do have warranty.. but only in their respective country of purchase.. iphone is the only apple product that does not have a valid international warranty!!

  • http://www.harshals.blogspot.com Harsh

Had been to alfa pune in sagar arcade.. he quoted me 40k for unlocked 3gs. he was not sure if it was factory unlocked. will buy one if i get it in 35k.

  • Aaron Lee

By warranty here, i mean the vendor who sells you the phone will provide warranty over your phone for a year. So if anything has to happen to your phone, the vendor will take care of it. Otherwise, you can’t go to airtel/vodafone, since you don’t have the proof of purchase, and if you go to a normal vendor, he’ll probably charge you an arm and a leg.

  • Aaron Lee

    @ Fenix,
    16gb iphone 3gs is not 42K, it’s 32K. Officially unlocked.

  • Zkstuns

    @Aaron Lee :Thx man !
Today i went to two shops in the grey market
One is Digital world in sagar arcade..he told me that 3gs was out of stock and i wud have to pre order it…16 gb will cost 37000 INR…Which i think is a good..infact a great deal !

Then i went to sony communication at bal gandharva chowk on JM road .. He also said that it was out of stock..He also quoted the same price and told me that i will have to pay him in the morning and he will give it to me till evening…
I need ur suggestion guys please..
My brother will be in pune on sunday and i have to buy that fone with him on sunday or monday…

  • Zkstuns

@Aaron : I have the same name on all the warez forums

  • Shreyash

I know the guy from Cell Zone in Sagar Arcade, FC Road, Pune very well. He quoted me 36,000 and i am buying it in 1-2 days.

  • kiran

    Hi,

I bought a Iphone 3Gs in USA. this is a “No commitment” instrument that I bought from Apple stores. I use it wit AT&T prepaid card in USA. I use Airtel prepaid phone in India. When I tried to use my Iphone with the Airtel sim in India, My Iphone does not detect the network. Can you plz. help.

    Regards,
    Kiran

  • Aaron Lee

    @Zkstuns
Bro, that’s a great deal. Trust me, just take it. In Mumbai, you can’t get one for less than 40K. Just physically check if the product is authentic, like check out everything, from hardware to software, before you purchase it from him. And ask him if he has a warranty scheme, like suppose you pay him some amount of cash, will he cover all your repair and faults for a year. Where is the shop exactly? I’m thinking of buying it myself.
Btw, on an unrelated note, how would you pronounce your name?

  • Makarena

Guys, can anyone suggest to me some shop in Cannought Place or Nehru Place to purchase the phone from? And also, if possible, quote a reasonable price as well. 32gb version. And also, who can provide me warranty/guarantee on it? Are these local shops to be trusted in that regard?

  • http://www.atularora.com AtulA

    @ Kiran,

iPhones sold in the US are locked to AT&T. So, unfortunately, you can’t use it in India unless you unlock it. If it’s version 3.0 or 3.0.1, it can be unlocked but if it’s version 3.1, you’re out of luck at this time. Can you check what version is it. See version field under “Settings > General > About>

  • Sharad

    Kiran,

The “no commitment” iPhone from USA are still locked to be used with AT&T and thats the reason you were able to use AT&T prepaid. To make it work with Airtel or any other sim for that matter, you need to get your iPhone unlocked.

  • kevin

i need help i wanna know if it is possible to get contract free iphone 3gs in usa (preferably factory unlocked)either in AT&T stores r in apple stores …….r can we get in walmart r best buy….if anyone of u knows it plz reply…..tell me de prize if u do know

  • Sharad

    Hi Kevin,

In USA, you can get contract free iPhone from Apple store or AT&T. But it will be certainly not officially unlocked which means you still have to use AT&T sim card. It just that you will be just contract free. Officially unlocked iPhones (means you can use any SIM) are sold by Apple in few countries like Australia and Hongkong.

  • Bhavs

    Hey Guys,

I want to sell my iPhone 3G 16GB locked to Airtel network…interested parties email @ bhavnaa.t(at)gmail.com

  • http://www.atularora.com AtulA

Bhavs, I’ve just sent a message to your gmail Inbox.

  • Aaron Lee

Is anyone sure that the iphone 3gs is available for $599/699, for 16/32 gb? That is, contract free. If so, please let me know ASAP.

  • Sharad

Sorry Kevin for late reply… Wasn’t in town for weekend,,,

No, you are not liable to pay anything to AT&T for unlocking if you buy no contract phone for $599/$699.. Once you get it here in India, you just need to spend INR 1000 for unlocking it

  • http://www.atularora.com AtulA

    Hi Kiran,

A friend of mine is going to the US to study and in case you decide to sell yours (since it’s not unlockable), he can buy it if the price is reasonable. Pls. let me know, my email ID: a023624a(at)gmail.com

  • Amrita

    Hey guys,

I am going to Delhi during Dewali. Can anybody give the address & contact number of shop selling Iphone 3GS Please.

  • Neetu

    Folks,

I got a 16GB iPhone 3GS thru a friend who visited US recently. But it has firmware 3.1 that is not unlockable at the moment. Thankfully, it’s not the latest 3.1.2 so there’s a good chance that it can be unlocked soon.

I did successfully jailbreak it yesterday using Geohot’s “blackra1n” utility and Cydia and Rock are now there.

But my other phone (Nokia E90) is causing me hell lot of troubles and I need to replace it now. So, instead of waiting for the unlock of 3GS, I’m thinking of selling it and buying another phone so as to use it immediately.

Lemme know if anyone wants it. I paid Rs 30,500 for it and will let you have it for the same price. It’s iPhone 3GS 16GB Black in its box. My email ID: neetuwason(at)hotmail.com

  • Neetu

Sorry, when I said “I did successfully jailbreak it yesterday using Geohot’s “blackra1n” utility and Cydia and Rock are now there”

    I meant

I did successfully jailbreak it yesterday using Geohot’s “blackra1n” utility and Cydia and Rock are now there on the iPhone allowing you to download free 3rd party applications/games/utilities from Cydia and/or Rock. I can install Icy also if you need it.

  • Neetu

    Amrita,

Pls. see my post below and let me know if you’re interested in buying iPhone 3GS 16GB Black for Rs 30,500. I’m in Delhi.

  • kevin

    hi neetu
how much did it cost u for 16GB iPhone 3GS(around 599$…?)…..is it contract free…..if u do know de place where friend bought it plz tell me………

  • kevin

    hi neetu
how much did it cost u for 16GB iPhone 3GS(around 599$…?)…..is it contract free…..if u do know de place where friend bought it plz tell me………

  • kevin

hi sharad….thanks for replyn .i do know how to unlock so that wont be a problem…………

  • Neetu

Yes, $599 + 8.25% taxes = $648.xx. Multiplying it by 47, I paid my friend (who brought it to India for me) Rs. 30,500 for it.

    Yes, it’s contract free.

He bought it at AT&T local store where they kept him waiting for more than an hour making calls to I don’t know who, discussing with store manager, checking their systems and finally allowing him to buy it contract free for that price.

  • Techkid

I hope you know that the so called cotract free iPhone from AT&T is not UNLOCKED, you still need to find a way to unlock the device.

Further more you can get the $599/$699 contract free phone only AND ONLY if you have an existing 3G iphone which is not eligible for upgrade.

  • Aaron Lee

    Same. :)

  • Avinash

    Hi All,
I have been following this post over the past few months and have gone through almost all the comments. Thanks a lot to all the guys who have posted here.i know that there have been a lot of rumours floating around but yeah the iphone 3GS has still not been launched here in India. So i decided to get mine from Australia as my relative stays there. He has already bought the phone and its a 16GB White that i had asked him to buy.It costs AUD $879,which will roughly work out to Rs 36918(1 AUD = Rs 42 approx).Ishould get the phone by the end of this month as my relativeis flying down to India.Yeah its officially unlocked as the law in Australia doesnt permit them to lock the phone to any particular carrier. To buy the phone in Australia one needs to be a resident of Australia.
So guys start saving up and i think it would be a better deal if you know someone in hongkong as its cheaper than in Australia.
Will talk more on this after i lay my hands on it.I read many posts on the net and a lot of people told me if you buy the iphone from Australia,Hongkong,etc.. where you get officially unlocked iphones it works on any network all over the world and the best part is that you can upgrade the iphone OS as and when apple launches a new software upgrade without having to worry about it getting locked again.
It better work here in India on any network as i am spending quite a lot on this iphone.

  • kevin

hey one more thing is it true that you can get the $599/$699 contract free phone only AND ONLY if you have an existing 3G iphone which is not eligible for upgrade.

  • richee

Any confirmation of launch, will it be available in diwali.

  • richee

Will iphone 3GS launch in diwali?

  • Aaron Lee

Yeah im aware, that’s why i mentioned Contract – free.
Thanks for the info btw. :)

  • kevin

guys i have a doubt is it true that you can get the $599/$699 contract free phone only if you have an existing 3G iphone which is not eligible for upgrade.

  • qwerty

inquired at “Imagine” store (specific Apple outlet) at noida and was told that the iPhone 3GS will be available next month, i.e., November. No info about the pricing though.

  • rAg

Just got an iphone from canada for 850 CAD.. its coming upto 40k including the conversion price to INR.. I think its a pretty good deal for a 32gig 3gs compared to the indian prices :)

  • Neetu

Yes, you’re right. I didn’t know that. Reading your comment, I called my US friend who got me the 3GS and he told me what you mentioned. And even with him possessing a 3G not eligible for upgrade, they gave him hell of a time before handing him over the 3GS that he was buying a no-contract price. Apple is simply amazing !!

So, I’m thinking now that for Rs 30,500 16GB 3GS is a heck of a deal.

  • Sachu

hi all…i have a friend of mine going to US for a month. Iam gonna ask him to get me a 3gs. So guys tell me the cheap n best to get one.
iam not looking for apple unlocked contract free. its arnd 32k.
some people told me we get from grey market in US sellers or like people take from apple for contract n then they cancel it n unlocks it after bring it here. Can someone help me on this ??

  • kevin

so my cousin does not have an existing 3g phone contract with at&t but he does have an at&t contract for a nokia phone he possess rite now…so its not possible for him to buy me an iphone 3gs contract free ?????????what are the other possiblities for me to buy an iphone 3gs say from best buy or walmart stores….if u do know please reply………

  • Rohan

What nonsense? iPhone 3GS is not yet announced in India….

  • Aaron Lee

    @ rAg
Where in canada did you get it from?

  • rAg

My fren got it from a guy on craigslist. He met him personally and got the phone :)

  • ashish

hey i want one if u wanna sell it out.. how old it is?? i can pay 10-12k if u want

  • Bhavik

    Guys,

I want to confirm two things:

-> We all know that iPhone 3GS purchased from Australia,Hongkong are officialy unlocked but has anybody actually got one from Australia (to be specific) and is it working in India? I am planning to get one from AUS through my friend but i dont wanna waste 37K :P

-> Are the unlocked ones only available on store.apple.com/au i.e. online store or are also available in their retail stores like apple resellers? Does anybody know that? The apple site says:

“iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and connect to
    iTunes 8.2 to complete activation.”

Can somebody confirm the two things above?

  • Harneet

Haanji… 42k for 16 and 48 for 32. Confirmed. Source: My cousin working in Airtel. Launch date: Unknown to employees.

    Chill maadi.

  • Aaron Lee

I just got my iphone 3gs white 16gb from Alfa, Irla. Got it for 38.5K, unlocked and jailbroken. Factory unlocked models were 40K.

  • anand

rohan call airtel or vodafone. its true 3gs will be available in india within 7-8 days.

  • anand

i dont understand why u people wanna buy iphone from grey market when u can buy it officially here in india price diff is not that much, 3gs grey market price for 16 gb is betn 36000 to 40000,official price for 3gs in india will be around 38000 with warranty.

  • anand

i bought 3g a year back for rs36000 from airtel and now im waiting for 3gs which will be here anytime (it has now 180+ paid & free apps worth rs7000,anybody wanna buy??at discounted price).

  • Sachu

Its hard to believe. First of all, apple is facing iphone shortages. Secondly, they just introduced iphone in China which is a big market. Surely, the will need a lot of phones there coz they have low price n good plans.

In India where 3g went out in small numbers, I dont think apple would be introducing it now. In addition, the price tag is also unbelievable. In Hong Kong, unlocked original iphones from apple cost around 32k. So this cant be true.

Moreover, holiday season is approaching in US and other countries. Well, thats one of the strongest shoppping seasons there. So Iam not pretty sure. And its suprising to know how pricing details came out first before launch date or any sort of ad. That is so not apple style.

Please Note: I dont have any source or anything. It’s just what i feel. So no offence ok. Let’s hope for the best :-)

  • AtulA

Anand, what price are you expecting for 3G ?

  • Avinash

Guys as promised here i am am now holding the iPhone 3GS in my hands.
As discussed earlier i had asked one of my relatives whol lives in Australia to get one for me.I got the the phone today and i should tell you the phone is awesome and incredible.
The phone being an officially unlocked one i tried using both the Airtel as well as the Vodafone Sim and vola it worked perfectly fine.
The phone came with the iPhone 3.1 OS and i even tried updating the software to 3.1.2 and that worked just as fine.
so all my doubts on whether the phone will work here in India have been resolved.

  • Mandeep Singh

    Dear friends

    Hey Avinash,

You cleared most of my doubts and my biggest fear that it will not work in India. But i still have couple of questions. If you can answer:

-> Did your relatives purchase it from apple retail store (apple resellers or apple showroom) or apple online store?

-> Did they activate it in Australia or you did it yourself in India?

I have also asked my friend to get it for me from Australia who is scheduled to come in 1st week of Nov. He said he will buy it from apple showroom and not from online store. But i just want to be sure that do they actually sell factory unlocked ones in retail stores.

  • Avinash

    @ Yogesh & Chintan

The iPhone 16 GB in Australia costed me AUD$879.
Considering 1 AUD = 42.20 INR it works out to Rs.37000 approx.

  • Avinash

    @ Bhavik,

Regarding your answer to the 1st question my relative had bought it from the Apple store in Sydney where he stays and yes the Apple stores in Australia sell Officially unlocked iPhones.

Regarding the answer to your 2nd question i activated the phone from India and it works. The moment you connect your iPhone as soon as you boot it up for the first time and iTunes opens up automatically and you get a message stating that “Congrats your phone is Unlocked” after which you are free to use any SIM and update your phone with the Software updates that Apple launches quite often without having to worry about anything.

Hope i answered all your doubts.

  • Bhavik

Thanks for the information dude :)

Etisalat and DU in UAE have launched iPhone 3GS at the price of INR 30,000 for 16 GB and 35,000 for 32 GB. Goodnews is both are officially unlocked as per the iPhone website and are contract free. So, go for it guys as I am sure more easy to get from Dubai than Australia. Cheers.

  • Shashi

    Hi.. matt
visit Sukh Sagar Shopping mall @ Gandhinar, Bengaluru

  • Yogesh

    hi,
i just checked both store sites of Etisalat and DU. They are not giving officially unlocked iPhone 3GS. They are giving on contract basis.
    Etisalat = http://www.etisalat.ae/index.jsp?lang=en&type=service&contentid=131abe955cd7f110VgnVCM1000000c24a8c0RCRD&currentid=86ff59ecfb01a010VgnVCM1000003c05000a____
    DU = http://shop.du.ae/en/iphone?campaignId=10000474

  • matt

    @ shashi
could u be more specific as to which shop in sukh sagar mall… i mean the name of the shop or atleast shop no

  • cd

From the link you just gave
“Etisalat is currently offering iPhone 3GS (16GB & 32GB) standalone devices at very exciting prices. More exciting iPhone 3GS offers are coming soon.” The packages mentioned are for 3G model only. If you know someone in Dubai, he has to go to the Etisalat outlet and get the phone without any conditions. As for whether it is locked to the carrier is confirmed from following page of Apple/iphone:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937
    Hope the above clarifies…

  • Sharad

    Hi all,

The Apple Online store is online again and once again Apple took so long to just update products like iMacs and Mac mini… Nothing about iPhone 3GS… I think it pretty clear now that India is definitely not on Apple’s list.

  • matt

    @shashi
dude the shop in sukh sagar mall ground floor says he has the 3gs 16gb priced at 35k…he says it is factory unlocked but how do i make sure that it is indeed factory unlocked

  • Kunal

    Hi sharad

I wonder how you could see the online store. It still says This section will be updated shortly.

    Regards,
    Kunal

  • Kunal

    Hi

i have some questions for you!! I hope you dont mind it
I am considering to buy Iphone 3GS from Mumbai Alfa (grey market)
How do i authenticate that its an original piece and it not jailbroken. i mean i want a original one and factory unlocked.

    Regards.
    Kunal

  • Kunal

    Hello Aaron

Nice to see that you got hold of one. I wanted to know how did you find whether its factory unlocked or jailbroken? I am planning to buy one this sunday.

    Regards,
    Kunal

  • Sharad

    Hi Kunal,

It was online last night and again this morning it went down for updation. However, this time the message is even shorter than before. Till yesterday it was “This section is updating and we will be back soon” and now it says “This section will be updated shortly”.
I saw it online yesterday 11:30PM.

  • Bhavik

It was up yesterday afternoon and it went down again today morning. Don’t know what they are up to :)

  • Bhavik

Ask him to connect to itunes – update it to version 3.1.2 and then insert your sim card and see if it works. If it works then it is factory unlocked. This is the sure shot way of finding out whether its factory unlocked or not. I guess if the shop owner is claiming that its factory unlocked then he should not have problem in doing so :)

At times behind the iphone box the country/carrier to which it belongs is written like AT&T in case of imported from US. You may want to check that also.

  • Shashi

Hi matt, go to Gurudev Shop

  • Kunal

    @sashi

Same question dude any idea? i would be first time buyer of iphone and how to authenticate it that its the original one and officially unlocked? i mean not jailbroken.

    Regards,
    Kunal

  • Rinku

    Folks,
I just stumbled upon this website while looking for info. on 3GS launch in India. I’m based in the US and while visiting my parents in Delhi during holidays, I brought 16GB iPhone 3GS for my Dad. But, he’s okay with his old phone and so I have this 3GS on offer for you. It’s Brand New and fully unlocked. Lemme know if anyone’s interested. Write to me at: dealwise(at)gmail(dot)com

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

Updating to 3.1.2 might brick the phone .. so don’t pay if its bricked :D

  • Victor

dude …go on an update the phone with 3.1.2 ..blacksn0w is out . it will unlock your phone in 20 sec… i did it few mins back ….. just released 10 mins back

  • saahil

hi Aditya…..i want to ask why u sais so??………..how buying an iphone from foriegn countries will benefit me??

  • RajBlore

    Hi! Guys,
In case anyone of you from Bangalore are interested in getting an unlocked iPhone 3GS, then just go to Sukh Sagar Plaza next to National Market in Gandhinagar. I just saw a few 32GB phones in one shop over there. The guy was quoting 45k. The box was opened and he claimed it comes open because they unlock the phones and then sell them. The phones he had looked brand new, and I have dealt with this guy earlier. He seems to be quite a genuine fellow.

  • Shashi

Sorry for the late reply Kunal… pls visit shop “Gurudev”, SukhSagar Shopping mall, Gandhinagar …. after entering the mall .. go straight …. leftside 4th shop. Ask for Factory Unlocked Not Jailbroken(sealed box)

  • Nidz

Got sick of waiting so went ahead and got myself a 32gb white 3G S from they grey mkt yest !!

  • Nilesh Patel

Just bought a 16GB iPhone 3GS in mumbai, already had a 8GB 3G sold it for 18k,got the 3GS for 34500, was lucky, coz every else where it is around 37-38K, guys buy it from gray market, dont wait for the official launch, coz this phone rocks, amazing amazing speed

  • saurabh

Please let me know if i buy company unlocked ipone 3gs from Hong Kong will it work in india without any problem ?

  • kunal

    hi Shashi

No problems. I unfortunately live in mumbai so dont know this place. Do you mean factory unlocked phones are sealed and not opened at all.
What i see in mumbai grey market is the boxes are opened i can wilfully surf on the phone by switching it on and do other things as a trial. i guess those are jailbroken.
Can you explain in more layman language? I quite a dumb in all this

    Regards,
    Kunal

  • Nilesh Patel

Yes it will, just pop in any SIM, if u get a locked one then u need a Airtel or Vodafone for it to work. But the HK one will work with any SIM

  • shashi

Yes ..definitely work.. I’m using the factory unlocked iphone

  • Anup

Have got iPhone 3gs 32 gig fact unlocked frm aus. It is simply amazing. It works fine.

  • SaiLeSh

Guys…the iphone 3gs 32 gig factory unlocked from dubai costs Rs.36 k(2800 AED) only….it is the best option other than hong kong….the iphone comes with 1 yr apple warranty…offered by etisalat…

guys aakhir kab tak hum log dusri countries se iphone lete rahenge sala apple india mein kab launch karega…..

  • matt

but dude the etisalat website does not mention that the iphone is factory unlocked….moreover it has a 12 month contract….how can u be so sure that it is factory unlocked

  • SaiLeSh

    @MaTT:

dude….no offence, but u need to go thru the etisalat web page a bit more closely…u can notice that the 12 months contract holds valid only for the “3G”…the “3GS” is offered as “standalone device” …..meaning officially unlocked!!!
hope i have cleared ur doubt…..and yeah…the phone is not releasin here before christmas for sure…

@ ppl who have doubts on how to find out whether the iphones are legally unlocked or not:

go thru the link i have posted in my previous message….it clears all the doubts anyone might have….and also all iphone owners need to go thru it!!!

  • http://cultofmac.com/ Sayam Aggarwal

    Hey Guys!

I am fed up of waiting for an official iPhone 3GS in India. All I want to know is, if anyone knows of a place in Delhi that sells factory unlocked 3GS (Model no. – Australia: MC133X, MC134X; New Zealand: MC134X/A; Singapore: MC131ZA, MC133ZA; Malaysia: MC134MY, MC133MY, MC131MY, MC132MY/A, MC132MY; Hong Kong: MC134ZP/A) in sealed box and for how much.

I do not want a non-sealed package cos I know of all the tricks that these stupid little vendors play and especially since a permanent unlock (hardware) just like the factory unlock (I know what this term means) is possible (a friend of mine in Gaffar knows how). :)

If anyone here has any information, contact me directly at sayam[at]cultofmac[dot]com. You can even check cultofmac.com is you like :p

  • saurabh

When i visited apple store 2 months ago they told me it will be avalable near diwali , second time they told me in 1st week of nov , now they r saying on X-mas …. but really i dont trust them now ..
some says the delay is due to stock prob world wide , other says that they are facing some issues in the contract done with airtel and vodafone … dont know whats true but now i am thinking that may be its just too late to buy iphone 3gs because i heard that they are planning to launch next-Gen Iphone …(new version )

  • http://cultofmac.com/ Sayam

I have got some useful information here people. I contacted some guy through an online ad and he has 3GS 16GB white/ black for Rs. 31,900 in sealed packaging!

You can contact the guy at mobilehunt[dot]org[at]gmail[dot]com if you wanna buy. He does pick up and pay but sadly, just in Mumbai (that’s why not useful for me as I want pickup in Delhi). If you are comfortable he can courier it or something but just ask him :)

Just my 2 cents paise. :p

  • Mandeep Singh

Saurabh my sentiments exactly with you even i have given up hope of 3gs launch dont know what these apple guys are thinking i mean they say stock issues but they just launched iphone in china and about vodafone airtel issues again its selling iphone through vodafone in other countries i agree policies will be different but still managment is the same and my dear about next iphone i would say we got first generation iphone when 2nd generation was launched in u.S then we got 3g when 3gs was gonna launch and so is the case with 3gs so what makes you think that they will release the 4th generation iphone in india??

  • Deen

Can I buy iPhone 3Gs in Apple store, Canada????

Happy to know that we have option to unlock even the 3Gs version.

But can anyone tell me what drawbacks will be there in buying the iPhone in Apple store??? should I need to pay any extra money to the cell phone service provider there in Canada???

My friend told me to buy second hand in Canada and do unlock to use it in India, to avoid the contract deal with cell phone service provider and extra pay.

  • Ravi

Can you let me know where in bangalore do you get Factory unlocked Iphone 3GS

  • sarvesh

    where? what’s the cost like?

  • Pankaj

yes the hongkong version is official Apple unlocked one. That means you can use it on any cellular network. Also, apple does give international warranty. No need to check the phone if your friend will buy from the apple store. However, to save custom duties at the airport. He will have to bring the iphone in hand as if he was using it.

  • Pankaj

I wish I had a friend in Hongkong. I would have already bought it by now.

  • Pankaj

The iphone 3GS is available in India through untrusted Sources and not Apple. I got quoted 42K for 32GB model by a seller on Quikr.com. Some phones are even stolen ones. So if you are purchasing one, make sure to get a Sealed Packaging one. Also get a genuine Bill / Receipt. Also you may want to contact Apple with the serial no. to get the exact status of the ownership.

  • Pankaj

There is no officical declaration for its launch in India. I have emailed Apple several times regarding this. They always tell me that I have been put on the list to be informed before it gets launched in india. What a load of crap. Like I believe that. Personally I believe, that it may be launched in the first quarter of 2010.

The best option right now for us is to get a hold of it from Hongkong. If anyone has any friends or family staying there then, they can tell them to bring one from them. Apple is selling factory unlocked 3GS models from the Apple Store. In INR it comes to 38K. I think that the price for a 32GB 3GS when it gets launched officially in India will be definitely more than 38K. If it’s more, it’s good for people (they’ll be happy) who bought from Hongkong. Or it may be lesser. If it’s lesser, then it will not be lesser than 3K to 4K which according to me won’t matter considering the official launch is months away. So friends by paying 4K more you get to enjoy the iphone 3gs much earlier than most Indians.

  • Pankaj

  • menon

hey.. i just lost my iphone 3G yesterday evening.. totally loved the phone.. don’t want to use any other phone.. any idea where the 3G S will be available in Delhi?

  • Sachu

r there any easy way to get from UK like in HK OR AUS OR US. I have my best friend in uk and i was wondering if i cud get it from uk for cheap. No matter if its locked. But i jus wanna know if phone can be bought cheap like takin in contract and then cancelling it or buying an unlocked one from there. no idea on prices. Can any one help ???

  • pankaj

Yes you can ask your friend to get one from UK through the Apple Store. The Apple Store will sell without the contract. However, it will be much more priced than the contract ones. And when you convert that price in Indian currency, you will see that buying from HK will be cheaper.

    Currently Iphone 3gs 32GB with O2 contract is £538.30 (Roughly 41,256.86 INR)
and with Orange contract is £549.00 (Roughly 42,051.28 INR)

Without the contract, it will be much higher. Maybe by £300 or £350. So I think buying from the UK is out of question for budget people. Moreover, the UK ones are not even unlocked.

Unlocked Iphones are being sold by Apple in HK, AU and NZ. Prices are as follows for a 3gs 32GB Black or White.

    6,288.00 HKD = 37,765.16 INR

    1,040.00 AUD = 44,263.09 INR

    1,349.00 NZD = 45,501.95 INR

  • Deen

@Pankaj, really a good required information to us. Thanks for that

  • menon

    @pankaj
but through etisalat, UAE too is selling standalone 3G S… afaik, it’s cheapest there… about 35k for the 32GB, 30k for the 16GB!

  • pankaj

Thats sad dude, Now a days people have become so greedy that they do not return anything they find. I hope some honest person finds it and returns it to you.

  • menon

    @pankaj
thanks man! they did not “find it” it was purposefully taken out of my bag.. during an exam.. top law school in the country.. makes you wonder…

  • pankaj

Yes it is true that Etisalat as well as Du are selling official Apple Iphone 3GS models for the following prices.

    32Gb iPhone 3GS

    Etisalat: 2,799.00 AED = 35,480.73 INR

    DU: 2,869.00 AED = 36,367.79 INR

    16Gb iPhone 3GS

    Etisalat: 2,399.00 AED = 30,414.66 INR

    DU: 2,459.00 AED = 31,190.22 INR

The above prices have been the most competetive uptil now. However, I am not able to confirm if they will sell standalone handsets. Menon thanks for the info.

  • Anil

There is a shop by name DG lifesytle in the airport terminal itself. It is a recoginsed apple reseller. You can buy apple products in that shop. Last time I visited Hong Kong he did have stock of iphones too.. But the shop is in Terminal 2 building. So you will need to enter Hong Kong after clearing immigration. But queue for security check in Hong Kong can be very long. So decide how much time you have and take a call. He typically offers abt 5% discount on apple products. Am not sure if it is the same for iphone.

  • menon

    @pankaj
it’s on their site.. etisalat is the site i’ve checked, because of the lowest price.. du i have not checked.. but standalone iphones, etisalat does sell..

  • pankaj

@menon: That’s wonderful news. That is the best price and it is official too. No need to worry about purchasing from crooks. Also, I don’t think that Iphone will be priced lesser than that when it gets officially launched in India. So this is the best deal we Indians could get anytime. Unlocking and Jailbraking is very simple too.

But Sadly I will have to wait another 3 to 4 months to get my cash piled up. After that I will have to dig around my contacts to see if some one that I know is in UAE. Then finally if I am fortunate I will have the Iphone 3GS 32GB in my grasp.

    Hi friends,
You people are so well versed with the details of pricing of iphone, want to get a couple of queries answered..
    1) if a phone is bought in US and is unlocked here, would it give any problems in function and would one be able to use all the features after unlocking?
    2) How much would a 3GS 32GB phone cost in US? (with contract or without AT&T contract)
    thank you..
    Naveen.

  • sarvesh

    hi guys,

got fed up of waiting for 3GS to come to india. went and bought a karbonn touchscreen for 3.5K. not an iphone nor a htc but still its wonderful. got a lot of useful functions.

waiting for the day i can get my hands on a iphonem officially unlocked. dont want to be a slave to any service provider :)

  • hmpatel69

Is there any place in Bangalore where they sell factory unlocked Iphone 3GS – let me know based on actual buying experience.

  • pankaj

@Naveen: Unlocked iPhones can be used with all cellular networks. It doesn’t matter where you get it unlocked or Jailbroken.

Try eBay.com if you want to purchase safely online or estimate prices. As per the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZF9NGI2qWc the girl bought a 16Gb 3GS for USD 638.

If there is a choice between N97 mini and 3GS, which one should it be? browsing is very important for me! so is reading pdf files!

moreover there is price difference and availability, both in favour of Nokia!

i would appreciate feedback frm ppl who have used both the phones! and frm others too ;)

  • Tanvi

    Hey

I woould like to know whats the best way the ATNT contract can be broken in USA ??
I dont mind paying the cancellation charges.. Coz even than after breaking the contract and paying cancellatin charges the i phone cost 25,000 INR But after the launch of 3gs, ATNT has became very stringent with policy breaking.

Also how efficent is it to buy the I phone without warranty..COz i know that apple phone bought with warranty can be replaced with new phone if somethign goes wrong. HOwever, when u buy apple without warranty and phone gets sick..its irrepairable..what can be done..

I know apple 3gs is available in MUMbai at ALfa stores from few months. but too paranoid to buy without warranty.

Im tired waiting for APPLE launch, really considerng NOkia 97 mini, which is available at NOkia stores for 30,000 INR and available at ALfa wihout waaranty for 27,000 INR..

I thinking of waiting for few weeks for Apple 3gs to launch in Jan 2010 or for NOkia 97 min to drop their prices around 25,OOo INR.

Im sure NOkia 97 mini has all apple features …seems great.!!

  • naveen’s answer

    Naveen,

I noticed that nobody has answered your question yet.It is possible to walk into any apple store or at&t store in U.S and buy a commitment-free iphone at the following price
    8GB-$499 (After tax $550)
    16GB-$599 (After tax $652)
    32GB-699 (After tax $765)

Please do the conversion to Rupees yourself.
A friend of mine bought a 16GB 3GS for me from US and brought it here (obviously green channel and no custom duty).
Thanks to blackrain and blacksnow,i have jailbroken and unlocked it myself in 2 minutes flat.

    I am loving 3GS!

  • Pratik

    @ Tanvi

at the end of the day a apple is a apple N97 mini cant match it.
    .
    .
does the jail break work fine on the new 3gS ???
heard there was issue with the new rom’s in the phone creating a problem to jailbreak it.

  • Victor

    Friends,

There is a good new news, I do follow the blog but missed out once i bought the n97. I just sold it off as once u use the iphone, u cant use anything.. I was using the iphone 3gs which I got from UK, but sold it off as the latest jb didnot work for me and thought it too much a risk to keep it as it can get locked it any time..
I was going round few shops to get the iphone 3g(8GB, as we cant get 16gb any more as all 16gb’s are 3gs) with airtel.

    NOW HERE THE STORY STARTS..

I BOOKED A CALL BACK FROM AIRTEL SHOWING INTEREST IN BUYIN AN IPHONE….
THEY CALLED BE BACK AND TOLD THAT ALL THE AIRTEL (KOLKATA) DONT HAVE IT IN STOCK AND THEY INTENT TO GET IT ON 3RD WEEK OF DECEMBER .. I ASKED THEM TO CONFIRM IF THEY HAVE 16GB COMING, THEY CONFIRMED BE “YEST SHIPMENT OF 16GB IS COMING THIS DECEMBER”

I WENT TO THE BIGGEST AIRTEL SHOP IN TOWN AND CONFIRMED THE SAME AND SPECIFICALLY CONFIRMED THAT 16GB IS COMING DURING 3RD WEEK OF DECEMBER.
BUT THE THING IS ITS NOWHERE WRITTEN ITS 3GS…
    BUT 16GB ARE ALL 3GS….

SO LETS WAIT AND SEE BUT DONT GET THE N97

  • Mandeep Singh

    Dear Pratik

Earlier the developers were not able to jailbreak the phone with new rom but now its possible now search the forum for the details but my dear if you are going for unlocked one then why do you need to jailbreak it??

  • Mandar

    Hello guys..
I am planning to buy an iphone 3GS in Sukh sagar mall, Bengalooru(grey market) this sunday. The shopkeeper is quoting 48k for 32GB factory unlocked phone. How can i make sure tat its in fact factory unlocked and not jailbroken?? Pls help guys..

  • sarvesh

Hope it comes soon and hope the price is affordable and not too steep! i’ve never used an iphone and i’m waiting for it! almost went for N97!

  • andy

    hi guys,
i have a friend coming in from canada and says that we get the iphone 3gs at standalone price of $700-$750 without any contract….i wanted to know if that is possible and if i get it do i have to do something like unlock….

  • sarvesh

what is he quoting for 16 GB any idea? all the best for sunday!

please write abt it so that we may also b wiser!

  • pankaj

Watch this video on youtube and you’ll know how easy it is to unlock and Jailbreak an Iphone 3GS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZF9NGI2qWc

  • andy

thanks pankaj…even wanted to know what will be the price if i get a 32g from canada….as per ur earlier posts is see that dubai is the cheapest.but my friend states that we can get it for max 800 canadian dollars which is around 34k inr…

  • Pankaj

@Andy: That is the best pricing if the 3GS 32GB has Apple Warranty associated with it. If there is no Warranty then, the phone is a grey market one which may give problems in future. I recommend staying away from Grey Market handsets. Most of the time they are refurbished or even stolen ones. The dealer will tell you that they have opened the seal for checking purposes or unlocking / jailbreaking. But the truth is that the phone is refurbished or stolen. Personally, I will buy an iphone directly from Apple Store or from an authorised Apple Reseller. They will break the seal in front of you or you can take the phone home and break the seal there.

  • Pankaj

In Canada the 3GS is being sold officially by the Apple Retail Store, Bell Store, Fido Store, Rogers Store & the Telus Store. Although, I am not sure if they are selling factory unlocked ones. Anyways that doesn’t matter when unlocking and Jailbreaking are a piece of cake.

  • Naveen

Thank you very much for your information and your promptness. Thanks once again
    Naveen.

  • addu

bt i reallY need d details ov d launch in india …thnx

  • Sam

    Hi Mandar,
Before paying the money ask him to connect the i phone to “i tune”.
If the phone shows i tune and you are able to download music or applications to your phone then the phone is unlocked.
Connecting to iTunes is nothing but unlocking the phone.
Keep this in mind before you make payment.
    all the best

  • sachin

Can anybody tell me how much it is going to cost me if i buy IPHONE 3gs (16 GB) from honk kong in INR. and if i do bring packed phone than what will be the duty that i have to pay

  • http://cultofmac.com/ Sayam Aggarwal

Want to know the duty, if any, if I get a sealed iPhone 3GS 32GB (officially unlocked) from Hong Kong (my cousin is going next week and I am psycho for the packed thing ;) )

@Sachin, it will cost you around INR 32,500

  • Vijaya Kiran

    Guyz,

Just hold on… do not bother if the iphone is locked or unlocked or what ever. Just buy anywhere in the world at what ever price you think is right. I bought an Iphone in USA – a supposed to be “NO COMMITMENT PHONE” from an apple store by paying 652USD(599+taxes).
I find that Apple is cheating us by selling these at that price. these are not actually “No Commitment phones”. They are all commited to bloody AT&T in USA and even when I shelled out that much, My phone is not working in India or anywhere in the world.

I searched the net and found “Blackra1n”. just downloaded and unlocked my iphone. Lemme tell you it took just about 6-7 minutes. and free!!!
I am now in Holland and using this phone with a T-Mobile sim!!!

So. dont care abou contracts. just buy at the cheapest place and unlock for free.

  • durai

dud!! can get the phone sent to me through air cargo….my uncle is in u.s. can i recieve it whitout any duty pay or tax (without customs problems and other stuff)….

  • anil

When its officially unlocked, it is sealed. But you still need to connect to iTunes first time to activate with Apple. On activation, you see message “Phone unlocked..” etc. Then you can use any SIM card. But this officially unlocked phone does not mean jailbroken. Jail breaking is a process to gain access to all the protected area of operating system and then creating compromise to install any software. Cydia is one such installer that will allow you to download such software.

So make sure you are buying a factory sealed piece!!! If you find box open then its not officially unlocked.

  • menon

went to an airtel store yesterday, spoke to an executive.. they’r still selling the 8GB 3G for little less than 30K… the guy said that they’r expecting the 3G S, Jan end (not a confirmation though).. delay is due to stock issues… from apple’s side.. they’r testing out different cellular networks on the iphone in b’lore!! TOTALLY UNLOCKED 3G S IN INDIA THEY’R GOING TO SELL!

  • Techkid

Guys there is already talk of new version of iphone being launched in july next year, lol forget about the 3gs and start waiting for the new version already.

btw my sources from airtel tell me that there will be no 3gs launch coming either this year or the next… so yeah forget about the 3GS!!

  • akanksha

hi how did you do it?

  • akanksha

how did you do it? please tell me by mail. Its golugolamgol@yahoo.com

  • Mandeep

techkid i know i have read about iphone 4g being launched but the thing is bro look at it this way iphone 3gs launched in june we dont have it and history was this only iphone 3g we got our hands on it pretty late so is gonna be the case with iphone 4g apple will start selling it in india when they will be launching iphone 5g in america basically when they will be throwing away 4g

  • sarvesh

    guyz! u r confusing me!

i want to buy a warranty phone but cant wait indefinitely! is it going to b launched in india or not?

scared of buying frm grey market! no relatives abroad too!

anybody has confirmed news abt launch?!

  • Ram

did u get a commitment -free version ?? can i buy an iphone with at&t connection and jail break in india???

  • Ram

    dude are u sure??

  • menon

au contraire, my airtel buddies tell me that it’s expected soon… AND voda stores too, are expecting a launch soon..
as far as the talk of a new gen is concerned… they start work on a new version even before they launch a current one… it’s a risk u take… also.. if this has taken so long, the alleged “4G” will take just as long… the 3G too, came months later…

  • Mandeep Singh

    Dear Menon,

Soon ok but how soon that is the question as i have been hearing this SOON pretty often so i am planning to get it from canada but the only thing that i am concerned about is that if something goes wrong everytime i will have to ship it back to canada for repairs as i read somewhere airtel or vodafone repair only those phones which are sold by them and apple since it dont sell unlocked versions here in india of 3gs so no way of getting it repaired by apple.

    Can any one confirm this…..????

  • Rajan

  • Pankaj

We are all indeed so desperate in getting the new Iphone 3GS. However, one word of caution i need to put up for all you people. Please do not fall into internet scamming. There is a lot of scamming going on on the internet selling cheap iphone 3GS phones. Whatever you do do not send money to any unknown person over the internet. Pay only after getting the product in your hands. Deals that seem too good to be true aren’t true.

  • laprincz

    durai

  • rAg

dude u r confused between commitment to network for taking a phone and unlocked phone.. when u get the phone at subsidized price then it means that u need to make a commitment with the network for certain period like 2 years in the case of ATT in USA.. buying a phone at no commitment price does not unlock ur iphone.. your phone is still locked to ATT but you wont be paying any rental month..

before shouting out that apple is cheating u and all first atleast care to read the specifications.. in each and every bloody damn place it is mentioned that even the no commitment iphone is locked to ATT.. u missed out that point and are complaining that apple is cheating u????

PS: even in india when u buy an iphone with airtel or vodafone at 30k+ the phone is still locked to the respective operators..

  • rAg

u will have to shell out around 2k to 4k as customs duty.. and dont worry it will be delivered to u safely dude.. that actual duty is 14.5% but these customs people take the valuation on their wish.. when i got the phone they charged me 14.5% over an amount of 26k even though the phone was declared to be worth 200$ (he even attached the bill copy as he took it on contract :P ) but still it didnt matter.. they took the value as 26k and charged me 14.5% over it..

  • sarvesh

hey man u never wrote abt whether u bought or not and what was ur experience?

  • menon

well… soon is soon i guess.. i mean… we can discuss the discussion out of this issue but we’ll get the 3G S when they’re ready to sell it to us.. so either we wait.. or u can go ahead n buy it from where ever.. i had a voda 3G that i bought from a reliance store.. all legal n shit.. i mean voda was selling it through reliance digital stores yet when i had a slight query wrt the iphone, i took it to a voda store n they refused to entertain me.. it was very horrible… finally got the reliance people to speak to the vodafone executives after which thy helped me…
a far as 3G S is concerned, lots of stores are saying that they’ll be selling it totally unlocked.. but airtel n voda will only help if u buy it from their stores.. if u have any issue u’ll probably have to visit the experts in the grey areas.

  • Pavan

I agree we all are in need, but I suggest no one spend a single penny to BUY such unlocks. They are the same as the free softwares available on the net.
However if you have a new 3gS with version 3.1.2 be cautioned it CANNOT be succesfully permanent unlocked. All the unlocks only work till you dont let the battery die or dont restart.
Anyone has any other solution we are still waiting.

  • Pavan

SAIF i request you to check if your iphone is latest 3gs with version 3.1.2 FW 5.11.xx as it is not yet succesfully unlocked. The unlock only stays till you dont restart.

  • Ashish

@pavan dude 3gs firmware 3.1.2 is not the one that cannot be unlocked successfully its only the 3rd generation ipod touch which reamains unlocked only till the battery does not die..

  • rAg

its 3gs as well and its not about unlocking, its about jailbreaking..

The issue is with the new bootrom, once the ipod touch or iphone is restarted the device will be stuck in recovery mode.

It just take a min again to get it to home screen which isnt really a big deal coz i rarely restart my iphone :P

  • Pavan

just check the issue with the new bootloader (anything above 5.08 )
Its ok it only looses unlocking if it restarts…

  • Saurabh

    dear laprincz ,
Please let me know the condition when u recieve your 3gs coz i am also planning to import it through courier from AUS .
I was wating for X-MAS , May be i will get some Discount then … any ideas ???

  • sarvesh

any news abt official sale of iphone?

  • Brijesh

Hey tanvi i will suggest only iphone i am using the same for last 3 yrs but still crazy about it coz of thousand of apps i recently bought iphone 3GS from Hongkong believe me there is no phone incomparision to it.Nokia is nothing in frnt of thi 3GS >earleir i was having iphone 2G and this 3GS is really must faster. But apple should work in increasing battery life thats the only bad thing about it.

  • Mandar

    @sam
    @anil
Thank u so much for the info.. It helped me a lot.. :)

    @sarvesh
Sorry for the delay dude.. Due to some probs, me buying an iphone got delayed. Finally i bought a 32GB iphone 3GS(Black) in national market, Bengalooru, yest for 44.5k.. Its factory unlocked(verified it b4 buying) and works awesome!! Best thing i’ve ever seen!!! He’s quoting 38k for factory unlocked 16GB 3GS..

  • Prasha

    Hi Mandar,

Can you mention the details of the shop in national market? Also how did you verify it is factory unlocked?

  • Tanvi

    Hey guys,

thanks a lot for all your help !!

Well, I am really confused I can get apple 3gs from USA commitment free from Apple stores..

but i am very very scared to buy without warranty…

Honestly, i dno the difference between jail breakin and Factory unlock..wot it means to me is sum breakin tht will allow us in India to use the phone..

my another confusion is whether I should factory unlock or jail break in USa or India…

Since the cell without warranty..what if it gets damaged or dies..it cant be repaired right…it will be a showpiece than..

I knw from my friends that apple software rocks..but if hardware gets tampered …the phone is a waste then..

im dyin to get apple 3gs…but stuck with warranty and repairing and unclockin…

Please leme know what can be done if i phone 3gs gets sc**wd..
whether i shud unlock it from India or USA…
how safe it is to buy without warranty..

    Thanks in advance..

  • Prasha

    Hi Mandar ,

Can you give the details of the shop where you bought the iphone?
Also how did you verify it was factory unlocked and did they accept credit cards or only cash?

  • Pratish

Hey does anyone know where in Mumbai suburbs can i get my 3GS unlocked? Its firmware 3.1.2.

    thanks

  • sarvesh

    mandar thanx for replying!

i have a few questions to specifically 4 you! maybe i’ll have a few more after u answer these ;)

    1. Is it better to buy from the gray market or wait for the launch? will u get warranty on ur set and where will you go to claim it in case of any problem ( God forbid )!
    2. is this shop same as the sukhsagar mall shop or another one?
    3. how did u check ur phone for originality in the shop before buying?

please be patient and answer all these coz i’ll b visiting bangalore early jan and planning to do the same as u did provided i get an authentic set!

hope u r enjoying ur iphone!

  • sarvesh

    hi!

    its very easy actually

unlocking means u can use any sim from any service provider! not like u have to use only airtel / vodafone ( this was for 3G, presently for 3GS no service provider has got the contact). if it is factory unlocked like how mandar bought it, then unlocking problem is automatically solved.

jailbreaking means using software to make some changes is base software of iphone so that u can use third party applications which apple does not allow normally. this many ppl do in order to get more applications or to get free apps for which apple normally charges.

unlocking is safe. nothing will happen to the phone.

jailbreaking can cause problems. it makes the phone susceptible to viruses. heating of the battery can occur and can damage ur phone. also some ppl report low signal and dropped calls ( tho some ppl on this forum don’t agree with this, i read it in gsmarena reviews ). for most of these probs u can do factory reset of the phone. some times u have to take phone to apple for flashing!

if u do one, u dont necessarily have to do the other.

    hope i cleared ur confusion!

  • Tanvi

hey u can unlock it from Alfa stores Irla, Andheri (Mumbai)….they sell all kinds of cells..including i phone 3Gs and unlocking…its a reliable store…

  • http://www.propertywala.com/ Saurabh

@sarvesh: You have to jailbreak first to unlock (how else are you going to run the unlock app?).

  • sarvesh

ya right! what i meant is u dont have to unlock after jailbreaking! and now with factory unlocked, no need to jailbreak.

  • sandy

after jailbreaking if we have some probs like decreased gsm signal, can we reverse the phone to the factory state or is it irreversible?

i too read abt decreased signal and dropped calls after jailbreaking

  • Mandar

    @Sarvesh
Here r the answers to yr questions..

    1. Its up to u dude.. If u hav the patience to wait till its official launch in India, u can wait. If u r desperate(as i was), go for it and buy from grey market. Because no one knows wen it’ll be officially launched! Since its not yet launched in India, he said I’ll not get Apple warranty. But if there’s any prob, i can get it repaired at any apple service center by spending money.

    2. No this shop is in National market(just beside Sukh sagar mall). Shop number is 36 & 37(Two shops clubbed into one).

    3. Go thro the below points to confirm whether its factory unlocked or not:

[1] If you have access to Internet and a pc/laptop at the time of purchase just insert any sim card and connect the phone to iTunes and click on restore if the phone is already activated. If it’s an officially unlocked phone you will read a message on iTunes that ‘your iPhone has been unlocked’ this means it is officially unlocked

[2] just swipe on the screen to the second page (could be even 1st) and see if you find cydia or blackra1n installed .. If you don’t find any and your sim still works then it means it is officially unlocked

[3] If you do see cydia/blackra1n then check then go to settings->general-> about and scroll down to modem firmware there are two possibilities it could be 04.26.08 or 05.11.07
if it’s 04.26.08 then open cydia goto manage->packages scroll down until you see ultrasn0w or yellowsn0w .. If you don’t see it then it means that the phone is officially unlocked but if you do then tap on it and then tap on modify (top right) and then tap on remove after having done that restart your phone and if your sim card works then it means that the phone is Officially Unlocked

if the modem firmware is 05.11.07 tap on blackra1n to check whether blacksn0w is installed if it is then uninstall it after that reboot the phone if it works then it’s officially unlocked .. If you don’t find blacksn0w installed then go to cydia and check if blacksn0w is installed (manage-sources) if it’s there uninstall and reboot if your sim card works then the phone is officially unlocked.

Few words of caution: Don even think of buying the iphone if its not in a sealed box or if the box is tampered in any way!! Bargaining is of no use cos he won’t let go even Rs.100. But don pay him even a penny more than Rs.44,500. U need to insert yr sim card(any active sim card will work) and connect it to iTunes once for activation of phone. Get it done by him itself, it’ll take hardly 2 mins for tat.

U can ask more questions, if u hav any.. :)

    @Prasha
    He accepts only cash dude..

  • Mandar

    @Sarvesh
    @Prasha

Hey Sarvesh, Read This And See What This Girl Is Saying :-

The Message Says “SOLD OUT” , If It Were A Tactic To Sell The Old Stock They Would Have Written “LOW STOCK, HURRY-UP, BUY-SOON” or Something Like That. Sold-Out Simply Means Sold-Out.

Secondly It Says “NEW STOCKS”, Now I Don’t Think They Are So Dumb (These People Already Know The Market Stats. And Everything) That They Will Stock iPhone 3G Again, I Mean That’s Simply Out Of Question To Stock iPhone 3G Again, People Who Wished To Buy It Have Already Bought It And Sales Of iPhone 3G Is Stagnant For The Past 5-6 Months(As iPhone 3GS Was Introduced In June), So The “NEW” Indeed Indicates “iPhone 3GS”.

Lastly The Message Says “COMING-SOON”, That Message Can Only Be Written For A Product Launch Which Should Be Available Within A Months Time Not More Than That.

    One More Thing…..

Vodafone India Can Also Publish That Message Simply To Distract The iPhone 3GS Wannabees Of India(that indeed includes me) And That “Coming Soon” Messsage Could Remain On Their Site For A Long Time, I Mean For 4-5 Months Until Apple Starts To Dump The “3GS” Stocks And Prepare For Next-Generation iPhone In June/July
    .

Finally, I Would Say That This Is The First Time In The Past 3-4 Months That Any Official Indication Has Come, So Please Apple Don’t Disappoint Us More.

    Thanks For Reading.

Just spoke to one of the Airtel customer care people, he told me that officially its not been launched, but Airtel stores should have started selling it. He told me the prices would be iPhone 3GS 16gb: Rs 26,100 and iPhone 3GS 32gb: Rs 31,100. I hope they have started selling it.
