Nokia 5800 vs 5530 XpressMusic

on August 25, 2009 – 1:11 am31 Comments

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the first touchscreen phone powered by Symbian Series 60 5th Edition was introduced in October 2008 and hit the markets during November 2008. Since it’s release, Nokia has had great success with the phone selling millions of units worldwide.

Initially the 5800 was available in Blue and Red variants which were, in time followed by a Black/Silver variant. A 5800 Navigation Edition was announced recently to celebrate the success of the 5800.

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic was announced as a variant to the 5800 XpressMusic in June 2009 and is set to release worldwide in August 2009. The Indian release is scheduled for 25th August 2009.

At first glance, both the handsets appear to be the same feature wise. However, these handsets are quite different despite them sharing a lot of similarities.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each compared to the other? Well thats what will be explained below.

Since the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was the first handset, let’s have look at it’s features first.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Features:

  • 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, 109 grams
  • 3.2 inch Resistive Touchscreen, 360*640 Resolution
  • 81MB Memory, 128MB RAM, micro-SD Card Slot (8GB Card Included)
  • GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, 3G, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro-USB
  • 3.15 Megapixel Camera, Autofocus, LED Flash, Carl Zeiss Optics
  • VGA Video Recording at 30Fps, Secondary Video Call Camera
  • S60 5th Edition, 434mhZ Processor
  • GPS with A-GPS support
  • 1320 mAH Battery, 3.5mm Audio Jack

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Features:

  • 104 x 49 x 13 mm, 107 grams
  • 2.9 inch Resistive Touchscreen, 360*640 Resolution
  • 70MB Memory, 128MB RAM, micro-SD Card Slot (4GB Card Included)
  • GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro-USB
  • 3.15 Megapixel Camera, Autofocus, LED Flash
  • VGA Video Recording at 30Fps
  • S60 5th Edition, 434mhZ Processor
  • 1000 mAH Battery, 3.5 mm Audio Jack

By looking at the specifications, we can realise that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is more feature packed than the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic.

Things that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has but the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic lacks:

  • GPS
  • 3G and HSDPA
  • Carl Zeiss Optics
  • Video Call Camera

The 5800 XpressMusic also has a bigger screen and a bigger capacity battery.

The 5530 XpressMusic also has some advantages such as being smaller in size and having a more attractive design.

But the main point of introducing a handset with lesser features is to create a cheaper version of the 5800 for the people who can’t afford to purchase the 5800  or even for the people who do not use all the 5800 features. Thus the touchscreen mania helps to reach a wider audience.

  • aditya

    arond 13.5
    gooooooooooddddddddddddddd phone

  • Andrew

Actually, the CPU is exactly the same on the 5800. The latest firmware increased the clock speed to the normal speed.

So the 5530 actually has nothing better than the 5800 apart from style.

    5800 is better than 5530:-
    1)3G
    2)video recording
    3)flash

launching 5800, 5530 and 5230 is a good strategic marketing idea of nokia….as you see….everybodys confused as to what to buy…so the idea is whatever suits your lifestyle they have it….and still they will profit….

    Now there’s a Nokia 5535 coming aslo

aditya, this is no better than 5800. With a touch screen, the larger d screen size, better. Processor is same for both. But 5800 jumps high on 3g, carl zeiss optics, more internal memory hence strainig the ram less, 8gb memory card included, free senheizzer headset. Never to forget, BOTH R D SAME PRICE APPROX. Its only looks that 5530 has better over 5800.

To be honest, it’s a futile exercise to compare 5530 and 5800 because clearly 5530 is a stripped version of 5800 with many features missing. They are aimed at different consumers. At the time of me writing this, the 5800XM has a lower price tag than 5530 because in the recent months the 5800 has seen major price cuts. So for me, there is no reason to buy 5530 anymore.

Build quality is superior for the 5530 but it has a smaller 2.9″ screen compared to 5800′s 3.2″ inch screen. For me the bigger screen matters more.

If anybody is concerned about some of the bugs in 5800, with the latest v40 firmware release, nearly all the problems have been sorted out. 5800 now also has Kinetic scrolling and it also allows more contacts on the homescreen contact bar. So 5530 and 5800 are equal in the aspect.

The 5530 doesnt have 3G. I know 3G is not widespread in India but if you are looking to keep this phone for the next 3-5 years, you should think about 3G as the entire world will be using it by then. 2G is already outdated in many parts of the world.

The 5530 also lacks GPS which the 5800 has. It depends on the user whether he needs it or not but its always a good feature to have.

Camera quality of 5530 is slightly better than 5800 but its not a big deal for me. Whatever picture 5800 provides is good enough for me. If I wanted professional quality pictures, I would look to buy a separate camera.

Hey i come to know from Nokia priority dealer that the new cheap 5800xm dont have few thing..like tv out cable.and even complete functionality…the pouch…a stand..and most amazing thing now it wont come with any GPS..earlier 5800xm was of arnd 20k in india and now 13.5 k . so now the diff b/w 5530 and 5800 is of only 3g…and other acc..like 5800xm comes with headset..zeiss optical camera..one video call camera….so i went for 5530..its cheap arnd 11700 rs. in india..with kinetic scrolling..good interactive home page..good touchscreen responce…and good design…..so take 5800xm only if u want 3g…else go for 5530..i m happy with my set..

  • kanak kishore

In between 5530 and 5800XM, I prefer 5800XM, indeed it is greater in all respect i.e. feature, quality of photo, wifi, flash and lot of things. In fact I can say Old is Gold but no doubt 5530 is also a good phone Nokia has introduced in such a small amount as cost. Thanks a lot to Nokia.

well, the nokia 5800 phone is quiet handsome but i feel the touch screen capacity must have a look over, its taking a long time to open the folders after giving a touch. The messaging facility in this phone is also really poor.Leaving all these, this is a good phone in every other feature.
