Microsoft renames Windows Phone Marketplace to Windows Phone Store

As part of its rebranding and simplification efforts, Microsoft plans to rename Windows Phone Marketplace to Windows Phone Store on its smartphones. The new branding is expected to be rolled out with Windows Phone 7.8 on current devices and with Windows Phone 8 on next gen smartphones.

The newly revamped Microsoft Dev Center adds a caption saying “Join Dev Center and publish your app in the Windows Phone Store.” This has sparked off rumors of a new brand name for the marketplace. Keeping in mind that Windows 8 already includes a Windows Store, it is not much of a stretch to assume that Microsoft is aiming for consistency across their product lines.
