    What about the accessories??????????

  • Ankit

    @Varun
I think there is some problem with my Nokia N8′s Photo gallery…..
Whenever I try to open any image, the window blacks out, but luckily the phone does not hang up, as I can still switch between application by long pressing the menu button.
Please can you suggest me what should I do?!?!

    Varun:
We believe that Nokia provided pre-release versions of the N8 to selected industry magazines (paper and web). Until you unboxed a production retail version, we had only browsed the comments of these magazines. Thank you.

Today the production version of the N8 retails in Nokia Priority stores in India. No doubt, Nokia would have fixed some early hardware and software bugs in this version. And in the days to come, some more software updates may become available online. We await your reports on the overall user-experience of the device.

    About the price
One class of consumer, seeks out first bragging rights on a new product. They would have paid the Rs. 2,000 pre-booking amount, even before Nokia announced the maximum retail price (MRP). It is reported that Rs. 26,259 is that highest price.

Small low overhead phone stores across the nation, have always been able to afford and offer lower prices than the Nokia Priority stores. A substantial section of savvy consumers stay away from the premium prices charged for every item by the Nokia Priority stores.
Our guess is, the small phone stores will sell the device for around 12% to 15% below MRP in the next few days to come. What do you think ?

      Hi Ram,
We worry more about the consumer than the brand :) Tats why we decided to get a retail version rather than the review device which will arrive this week.
Direct company controlled stores be it Nokia, Sony or any product sell the products at a premium price. Would advise you to get it from a smaller phone store if you want value for money and willing to wait :)
23-26K is rough market price for the phone now from our research across India.

    Hiii Everybody..
Don’t u think that the single speaker at back side in N8 is a problem…. specially when it is kept on bed n such type things… sound is also very low in the device..In my views Nokia should have taken care of this big n common issue…

      Issue of Speaker location
Question: What should be the minimum separation of speakers for stereo listening ?

Answer: At least more than the distance between the left and right ears of the listener. Mobile phones are not as wide as a human head. So it does not make sense to have stereo speakers on the body of the handset.
Might as well have one good speaker with both channels mixed.

How does a design-engineer choose a location for this one good speaker?

      (1) The interactive display screen occupies most of the front face.
      (2) With the trend to make phones thinner and thinner, the speaker grille cannot be on the edge.
      (3) The only choice is to put the speaker on the rear face.

The camera module stands a few millimetres proud of the rest of the rear face. This contains the Tessar lens, Xenon flash, recording microphone and loudspeaker opening.
If the phone rests on a flat hard surface, there is enough room for sound to exit the speaker and be audible.

Isn’t it obvious then, that, while listening to audio,
the Nokia N8 should not be placed on its back on a pillow or bed.

This allergy to beds and pillows, also applies to every other touchscreen phone from every manufacturer.

Do not make such huge assumptions. My N900 gets really good stereo sound when I am laid in bed with it, as its only a few inches away from my head so the separation is really good.

Even further away it works well, although in that case it helps that it has the kick stand as if you put it on a desk the sound reflects back off it.

Nokia never seem to learn from the good aspects of their older devices.

Still doubt if it can plays avi files?.camera is not good enough compare to my N95 y i don’t understand may b i m not able to set things properly???????????????????????????..

    • Ram

      Arun:

I have a Nokia N82 (equivalent to N95 plus Xenon flash).

In December 2009, I purchased online from MobiHand Inc.of California, a software called CorePlayer Mobile for Symbian S60 3rd Edition. The software cost me $29.95 [Rs. 1330]

It plays all kinds of multimedia. Besides youtube, it is also Matroska MKV Ready, Can handle the following audio:
MP3, WMA, AAC, MKA, WAV, OGG, Speex, WAVPACK, FLAC, MPC, AMR, GSM, ADPCM, ALaw, MuLaw, MIDI.

And the following video: CoreAVC (H.264), AVCHD, MKV, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 part 2 (ASP), DivX, XviD, MJPEG, MSVIDEO1.
It can also show still images in multiple formats: JPG (420, 422, 440), BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF.

Handles containers like FLV, Matroska, ASX, ASF, TS, PS, M2TS, 3GPP, MOV, AVI, MPEG-4 and NSV.

Overall I am happy with it.
I use it to play whole DivX movies while travelling long distance by train or bus.

      Arun:

I had a DVD rip of the movie Christine(1983). That was an avi container file.
A full length movie: 1 hour, 45 minutes, 34 seconds.

The video codec used was MPEG-4 video (Xvid)
      with a resolution of 640×272
and frame rate of 25 per sec.

The audio codec used was MPEG audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga) with
stereo channels. Sample rate was 48,000 Hz and Bitrate 128 kb/s.

Copied the file into a USB pen drive and plugged it into my Nokia N8.
The movie played just fine !!!.

Conclusion for you: The Nokia N8 can play .avi container files.
I have also tested it with .flv and .mp4 container files.

Very thrilled with this phone boss. And its battery life beats iPhone 3GS and some Android phones.

    Varun… KD here da.

i got myself an N8.. listen the OVI suite is so slow that i m unable to actually transfer any videos..

Do you have a suggestion to do it in a better way. looking forward to hearing from you at the earliest..

    cheers.

    • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

Best option is to connect the N8 in Mass Storage mode and do it via windows explorer

  • Ram

Wanted to try out the much hyped “Swype” on my Nokia N8.

    However the OVI store says,
“Sorry, this item is not available for the Nokia N8-00…
    …NOTE : Currently supported for C7-00 only.”

Imagine!! these are the early two Symbian^3 devices!

So I feel, it may be worth trying out the competitor “SlideIT”
This is available from the OVI store at
