Sony Corporation has reported its revenues for the first quarter of the financial year 2017 that ended June 30, 2017. Sales increased by 15.2% to 1,858.1 billion yen compared to the same quarter last year due to increases in Financial Services and Semiconductors segment sales.

Sony Q1 FY2017 results by Segment

Operating income increased  101.4 billion yen year-on-year to 157.6 billion yen due to the improvements of operating results in the Semiconductors and Imaging Products & Solutions (IP&S) segments, partially offset by a decrease in operating income in the Game & Network Services (G&NS)
segment.

Its Mobile communications division reported sales of 181.2 billion yen, down 2.5% year-on-year. This is mainly due to change in product mix, partially offset by an increase in unit sales, both in smartphones, said the company. Operating income was 3.6 billion yen, up 800% primarily due to
reductions in operating costs and research and development expenses, partially offset by an increase in the price of key components.

The company shipped 3.4 million smartphones, compared to 3.1 million a year earlier. It has the same full year smartphone shipment target of 16.5 million units.
