BSNL announced Commercial 3G services in Chennai and we already have a report for you. We grabbed our 3G SIM Card for Rs.179. Required documents were 2 Photographs and Photocopy of an ID proof. You need to fill a form which is common for all Prepaid mobile connections these days. And once you are done with the formalities , you get the SIM card in a Credit Card size holder.
We grabbed two of these so that we could test Video Calling. Luckily we have a lot of handsets lying around in the FoneArena Test Labs . We popped the first SIM in the Nokia N97 and the 2nd one in the Samsung Omnia HD. Since we keep our phones on GSM only mode to conserve battery and 3G is just coming up, we had to change the Network setting to Dual mode. We have tested 3G on AT&T USA , T-Mobile USA, Vodafone UK and O2 UK but experiencing 3G in your motherland India is always something to cheer about. No wonder we are all excited about the launch.
After some initial hiccups about settings we figured out the access point to be simply gprssouth.cellone.in
Just this and none of the another values in your access point settings matter.
Below is a speed test on a Omnia HD. It clocked 737 Kbps
Nokia E72 and N97 with 3.5G clocked 1 Mbps max. Below is Nokia N900 running the flash version of Speedtest.net and clocked 1Mbps download speed

actually in Chennai BSNL 3g working very small area , if your 3g phone status shows H symbol , you can make video call, otherwise you cannot make the video call but the stupid customer care people they did not know anything , the Chennai BSNL cheating the all customers,
I can’t able to make video call even when my phone status shows H symbol. Even i can’t able to browse or watch TV.
I recieved the settings and saved those, Could anyone help me?
I didn’t enjoy any 3G service in my #G phone.

3G data recharge vouchers are nowhere to be found in Chennai. Does anyone know where to get them ?
your rite yuvamani. when i called customer care they stated that they will issue data recharge vouchers at the end of this year. but i am not sure.

I have a nokia 5800 and recently got a bsnl 3g sim. the access point setting is gprssouth.cellone.in. when it try to connect via BSNL Internet, it connects (the E icon on the top). but no page opens. Please help.
u need to select bsnl internet as the access point whenever u connect to internet, then it connects using 3g network, it should work fine.
am also using nokia 5800 ,in chennai.

hi i’m from punjab.↲i am sure that every 3g user facing problems. Like timed out and many more. even we are not able download anything from rapidshare.com because of their proxy server. No port forword option for torrent client. I DON’T LIKE BSNL 3G because they are not providing public IP.

I contacted BSNL . Looks like they have only normal recharge vouchers . Works out to Rs.1 per MB . Expensive !

Yesterday,I went to Adyar bsnl and got ‘Data Recharge’ of 649(+Tax)= Rs.716 for 2GB free usage with validity 30days,
Since the schemes are new,most of the workers are not fully aware of the plans,but all of them are helpful and attendive!
I’ve configured ‘Tethering’ of iphone with my MacBook,it works really good!
Occasionally signal changes from 3G to E,which is really annoying!

BSNL 3G may be good or bad. But the voice quality of their mobile network is so bad that even with 3G or 4 G technology the voice breaks. BSNL does not have any intention to correct the problem and their officers are not helpful or just refuse to understand the problem. May be, they all wish to help the private players??

I got the Data Recharge coupon from BSNL today (total cost 606). It gives 1GB day time and 5GB night time usage.
I am trying to connect on my Nokia N900. It’s not allowing or some settings I am entering it wrong. Can someone help me.
If you too have an N900, you can help me like where to enter this WCDMA/UMTS ode thing. I am unable to figure it out!!

Enter access point as gprssouth.cellone.in or gprseast , gprswest or gprsnorth depending on where you are from.
remove all proxy
For n900
got to setting->internet connections->connections->bsnl internet(if not add new)-> connection name BSNL internet type as GPRS goto next
->APN gprssouth.cellone.in. rest all spaces( chennai).

I am also using BSNL 3G services in chennai.
Internet speed is awesome, It comes 787 kbps for me.While browsing in system.
As said as above i am also not able to use the BSNL Mobi tv facility.
It is not at all connecting and registering.
I have tried sending mails to Apalya.com but there is no response form the support team. Thank god! I didn’t lose any of my bugs from my Balance.
If u are buying 3G for:
TV service please don’t buy it..!
For internet.. Its Ok. (charges are bit expensive).
Video Calls. (Have didn’t tried yet..)
