Well the title says it all and no you haven’t read it incorrectly. The Apple Application Store has indeed hit the 2 Billion Application download mark. This was announced today at a press conference in Cupertino, California.

Apart from this, some other aspects highlighted at the event were: The Application Store now hosts over 85,000 applications for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Over 125,000 Developers are involved in the Apple iPhone Developer Program. There are more than 50 million Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users worldwide.

Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) was quoted as saying “The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone. The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

The Apple iPhone and iPod Touch are available in 77 countries worldwide and the App Store contains all the apps necessary for the wide user-base including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.
