iPhone 3.1 Update might brick your unlocked phone for life Beware !

Apple is getting tougher against unlockers with each firmware update to the iPhone. Yesterday the 3.1 update was released. The iphonedev team which released pwnage tools to unlock even the 3GS is sending out a warning message.
3G+3GS unlockers must still stay far away from official 3.1. There’s no known way to revert from 3.1’s 3G+3GS baseband
This message comes from MuscleNerd who is part of the team which releases the unlocking tools . What this means that there is no way to re-virginize the 3G and 3GS phones once you upgrade to 3.1 .
2G iPhone users seem to be the least affected. But don’t worry these guys have already found a hack around which will be released soon. For updating your iPhone 3G/3GS to 3.1 you need a pre-hacked firmware file which is expected to be released soon. So stay away from the official update until this fix is out if you don’t want to turn your expensive gadget into a mere paper weight.

I am one of those poor, unfortunate T-Mobile iPhone users who accidentally upgraded my 2g phone to firmware 3.1. I meant to sync my contacts but ended up with an iBrick; no way to activate. At this point it shows the USB to iTunes graphic but gives me the ability to make “emergency calls” using my T-Mobile sim.
My attempts to downgrade back to 3.0 (or 3.0.1) and unlock via redsn0w 0.8 have been unsuccessful. I read that has something to do with a 3.1 baseband update that cannot be reversed. I eagerly await a 2g hack that might be able to help me. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas in the meantime. . . thanks in advance.

Yeaahhh.. That’s correct
even i am also one of those poor…..
Defntly, DEV team will come up with sollution to unlock 3.1.
As a 3G S owner, I await the day that an open source Android app store has more apps than Apple’s “walled garden.” Hopefully there will be a good iPhone clone with a 3.5″ or bigger screen at the same time!
We’re on the same page, man! I accidentally upgraded my 1st gen iphone to 3.1 Now all I can do is make emergency calls and read popup messages (or if there are more texts, i just know now how many there are. haha). We need big hacking help.
man don’t you just hate apple! pure greed that they tie themselves to phone companies. I have used apple for 20 years… my next computer will be a dell!
i am in the same sitiuation. I have no experience with computers, so when there is a way to re unlock the 2G iphone, please help me! ><

For people who accidentally did upgrade to 3.1 firmware should try to use at&t sim card to restore again.
Is there no way to downgrade the 3gs? I am being told I have to wait.. this realy sucks, I have only had the phn 2 weeks , and I was really enjoyng it, and I wasn’t aware that I shouldnt update it,

Follow the rules. Be an adult. Respect yourself and the company that made this gadget possible. Lol to all those ibricked phones. Serves u right.
check your setting in your cellular data network make sure it says payandgo or at&t or who ever yoour with
Jailbreaking iPhone 3G with OS3.1:
1. Download PwnageTool 3.1
2. Download the unhacked OS3.1 firmware from Apple. http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6600.20090909.AwndZ/iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw
3. Run PwnageTool and select the unhacked firmware from step #2. Modifying the firmware should take about 4-6 minutes.
4. A modified version of the firmware should appear on your desktop.
5. Insert an AT&T simcard into the iPhone.
6. Put your iPhone in DFU / hard reboot mode. (Power + Home button ritual)
7. Plug in your iPhone to your computer via USB.
8. Start up iTunes.
9. iTunes should detect the iPhone as in recovery mode and should give you a button to restore.
10. On a Mac, hold down the Option key and while clicking on the “Restore” button in iTunes to choose the location and file to use.
11. Select the modified firmware on the desktop (created from step #3)
12. Restore.
13. Allow anywhere between 10 – 15 minutes for the restoring process to complete.
14. The iPhone should reboot itself. Allow 3-5 more minutes for the phone to configure the new settings.
15. Cydia should appear. Install repo666.ultrasn0w.com into Cyndia’s sources.
16. Install and run “Fuzzyband” from Cydia to downgrade your iPhone’s BaseBand / radio firmware to version 04.26.08.
17. Remove the AT&T and insert in your non-AT&T sim card.
18. Reboot your iPhone.
19. The phone should be able to use non-AT&T network now (T-Mobile, Verizon, etc).
20. Enter in any appropriate network settings (E.g. for T-Mobile: Settings –> Carrier –> General –> Network –> Cellular Data Network –> Cellular Data section APN: internet2.voicestream.com)
21. Your phone should now work with your carrier.
22. This firmware hack will not brand your carrier on the top corner of your phone. You can install “MakeitMine” from Cydia to customize the top of section of your phone. This step is not required. It’s only for cosmetics.
