T-Mobile G1 Unlocked works in India on Airtel

Submitted by Varun Krish on December 9, 2008 – 1:01 amEmail This Post Email This Post | 125 Comments

I recently got my hands on a T-Mobile G1 the first Google Android powered phone.

I brought it to India from USA. I unlocked the handset through T-Mobile and the phone now works perfectly fine on Airtel .

We are working on a in depth review of the phone which is the first phone based on the Google Android Operating System.

We have been telling you about gPhone since August 2007

As you can see the phone works perfectly fine on Airtel’s Network.

I was able to get most features working easily starting from calling , browsing , Messaging , Email etc.

Internet works totally fine with GPRS / EDGE (Mobile Office) and Wi-Fi

See the browser in action below

We also brought you live pics during the launch of the G1 from a T-Mobile showroom

Google Maps works .. but GPS / My location does not seem to work indoors

  • Sunny says:

  • Sunny says:

    Mr. Varun can you help me out? Can you please tell me the settings i need to have it in to get the maximum amount of apps and products that will work in India? Such as maps, gps and browsing.

  • Varun says:

    @Ekansh

    Any sim will work on G1 as long as internet / gprs is active on your number

    @Sunny All most all features work in India except Paid Apps in the Market.

    Google has restricted Paid Apps to be downloaded only to locked phones in the US.

    All free market apps are possible to download on unlocked G1

  • Vineet says:

    Hi Varun,

    I am getting a G1 from US, the airtel sim i am using does not have gprs(as i plan to use wifi for internet). In some comments you have mentioned that i need a gprs active sim to activate my g1. I guess that would be required just once for activation.
    Please confirm

    Regards
    Vineet

  • Akhil says:

    hey varun
    i got a sidekick 3 unlocked from us. but im not able to get the connection. only emergency calls allowed! what should i do? im in chennai using airtel postpaid. by default my network apn is
    hiptop.t-mobile.com
    username: dummy
    password: dummy

    please help me.
    thanks
    akhil

  • Varun says:

    @Vineet

    Yes. You need GPRS for activation only . Phone will work without that.

    But battery drains kinda fast with Wi-Fi on . If you can, buy an extra battery for the phone

    @Akhil

    I don’t know about sidekick. But from what your telling , looks like phone has not been unlocked . Did you try with another SIM ?

  • Akhil says:

    yea i tried a vodaphone sim it worked. not getting service on the airtel sims. can the sidekick 3 recognise gsm 900 in india?

  • Tejas says:

    hey,

    I know this is kinda of the topic here, but i’m sure this is releated.

    I recently bought a T mobile shadow from a credit card scheme, and my phone is working fine on my Idea sim (so its obviously unlocked)

    But i can’t access the internet on it… Can any1 plz lemme know if i need to unlock it further, or maybe call T mobile US?

    any help appreciated!

    Tejas

  • Tejas says:

    hey,

    I know this is kinda unrelated, and mayB this is my 2nd post.

    I bought a t mobile shadow from a credit card scheme, and my Idea sim card work well with the phone (so i’m guessing its unlocked). The GPRS however doesn’t work. I tried the same on my motorola phone, and the GPRS works fine. Is there any kinda further unlocking i need to do? or are my settings all wrong?

    I went to the idea site, and entered the data needed into the GPRS entry. But not all the settings provided had any options in the phone! So is there any hope?

    Any help appreciated!

    Tejas

    So may I know the prerequisites that need to taken care to use it in India with AndhraPradesh Airtel network. How to start off.

    Please it would be great if you mention from the scratch of how to start using it in India.

    Sireesh

  • Sagar says:

    Hey guys,

    looks like, my search has come to an end :-) and we can certainly use G1 in India. However here my questions; it would be god if anybody can help me with.

    1. What is the difference between SIM-unlocking and Hardware-locking?
    2. What extra things are needed to purchase the unlocked phone from T-mobile ?
    3. In-case, we purchase the phone in US and perform the so-called un-locking procedure, then putting a different SIM ( may be Verizon, AT&T ) and getting online — is this check sufficient to ensure that the phone is un-locked hence, 100% is going to work in India ?
    4. Any news on unlocking the G2 ?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Bharath says:

    Hi Varun,

    You are really doing a good job…i appreciate it…

    I have got G1 frm China which is one exported to US, all the packing everything is same. it is unlocked ( i dont know how to verify that, pls let me know how do verify wheather it is unloced or not), but when i put my EDGE activated sim of BSNL and after giving settings of APN it is still not going through and i am struck on the startup screen on gmail a/c details…. pls help.

  • richi says:

    hi i think its better u go to banglore and have ur mobile unlocked

  • Varun says:

    @sireesh

    You need have GPRS active on your number. Thats the main requirement.

    @sireesh

    1.SIM unlock is when you key in a code to unlock the phone , Hardware unlock might involve modifying the hardware , firmware.

    2. I think its priced higher thats it

    3. Verizon is CDMA , AT&T should be fine.

    4. No news on G2, We will kepp you posted .

  • Varun says:

    @Bharath

    Even if you get a signal after putting a SIM Card otther than t-mobile , it can mean that its unlocked .

    BSNL has a bad service record with regards to the GPRS activation.

    Are you sure , the GPRS is active on your number ?

    Can you try with a different network ?

  • Sagar says:

    Yes, richi, Why banglore ?

    @varun :

    1. Thanks for the comments!.
    2. Which unlocking method ( SIM/Hardware) will be useful, if I want to use it in india ?
    3. Any pointers how to get the phone unlocked ?

  • Prathyush says:

    I just bought an unlocked G1 from someone who got back from the UK. I have Airtel Live activated on my SIM but I’m unable to go beyond the Gmail login screen on the phone. After some snooping around, I also found and used the following information to create a new APN (which also doesn’t seem to work):

    Name: Airtel Live!
    APN: airtelfun.com
    Proxy: 100.001.200.099
    Port:8080
    Server: 100.001.200.099
    MCC: 404
    MNC: 45

    Left everything else empty.
    Am I missing something? What more do I need to do to get it working?
