Nokia E71 Review

E71 is the latest fashion statement from Nokia
Its only 10mm thick and is rich in features. We will run through all the important features in this ESeries device
I admit that being a die hard Nokia fan. I just loved to get my hands on the device . Its such a sexy phone.
I would say its the sexiest and most beautiful phone Nokia has ever made .
Form factor , Display and styling
The phone looks damn small compared to the E61i and the metallic body makes this phone feel special and classy.

display has undergone reduction in size only 2.36 inches but it packs a 320X240 resolution and is clear and easy on the eyes
the phone comes with a 2GB microSD card and its hot swappable - port is present on the left.
volume keys are present on the right.

Connectivity
Its a Quadband GSM phone with support for 3G and HSDPA
Infrared , Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP , WIreless LAN a/b/g or WI-fi , A-GPS and 3G support . It’s also got support for HSDPA
There is a also a data cable which comes with the phone and port is below the memory card slot on the left.
Calling
Call handling was fine , no issues .
Keypad
The keypad has improved a lot over the E61i and E62 . As a matter of fact , I traded in my E61i to get this E71 and i am not regretting it
The click and feel of the new keys is great and gives you a good experience overall
There is also support for Predictive Text Input although most QWERTY phones drop this feature.
Frequent Texters / SMS freaks will love this phone for sure.
Theres is the normal D pad which has good response.
there are dedicated keys for home,calendar on the left and for phonebook and messaging on the right
keys are pretty close to each other and occasionally you might press the wrong key.
User modes
This phone has interesting new way of separating your work and personal life
Theres something called Switching modes and you can basically have 2 home screens for the phone.
You can have you personal mail accounts show up in one screen and have you corporate email show up on another.
Its a bold attempt to solve information overload.
Messaging and Email
Emailing has not got better in any Nokia phone. I added my gmail account and I did not have to enter any server information.
I just entered my email and password and chose my Wi-fi connection and it started .
I was up and running in under 30 seconds. Thats pretty good
SMS got a lot better and you can do a lot of stuff with the improved notifications system.
Mobile web browsing
Mobile browsing has got a bit better but not as cool as the iphone. I admit i have been bitten by the iphone bug
But one killer feature all of you would love . you can watch youtube videos within the browser it self .
you can actually watch streaming vidoes within the browser only which is a great improvment.
Nokia might beat the iphone hands down in this league if it improves this feature a bit.
Software , Applications , Performance and Memory
This phone runs Symbian Os 9.2 with S60 Feature Pack 1. There is some software which comes preloaded on the phone - Quickoffice(Quickword, Quickpoint, Quicksheet), Adobe PDF Reader, Active Notes
We installed Google maps , gmail app and youtube app.
It seemed to run much faster than E61i which was damn sluggish.
Theres about 110MB of phone memory and it ships with a 2 GB card, so you might not have to buy one immediately . It supports upto 8GB of memory expansion.
Camera
This e series phone has a 3.2 mega pixel camera with flash and zoom. this is good enough considering the fact that this is not a multimedia phone but a business phone.
[Sample image taken with phone]
VGA video recording (320×240px) similar to VCD quality is possible and fine for capturing great moments. Camera does not have shutter. There is a mirror on the right so that you can look into the phone while clicking your photo. There is a camera on the front but is meant for video calling.
Multimedia
Audio
There is a single speaker on the top left of the screen . Its louder than the E61i and is not bad at all for music playback. Its not perfect. Music gets a bit choppy with bass.
music playback is time upto 18 hours but sadly no 3.5mm port only a 2.5mm
There’s FM Radio too
Video
You can capture upto 1hr of video . Theres Real Player and it supports Flash Lite 3, mp4, .3gp; H.263, MPEG-4 VSP,RealVideo,H.264
Battery
Battery life is great ! 10 hours of GSM/2G talk time is as good as it gets . A 1500 mAh battery is packed at the back for device.
Conclusion
Considering the fact that the Nokia E71 is a business phone competing with the blackberry phones and other enterprise devices,
its a clear winner in most areas. Camera’s not the best but decent enough compared to E61i.
If you are looking for a phone for mainly calling , messaging and plenty of connectivity options and a fast OS plus phenomenal battery life this phone is a great buy for around Rs.20000.
This is a short review , please leave a comment if we have forgot to mention any feature.
We are still playing with the phone

Nice review. One suggestions you have started the review by saying that E71 is the new fashion statement from Nokia, whihc is entirely wrong as E71 is for the business conscious and not the fashion conscious.
Vikram .. good point .. IMO i felt it more like a fashion statement than a business phone . But in my conclusion i mentioned about the business phone part ..
I was attracted to this phone mainly because of looks and battery life
Yeah, I agree to that, this phone is pretty stylish as compared to E61i. The steel like back side and slim features are its USPs. I have one more question, how is its 3.2 mega pixel camera, i know its beter than that of the E61i but then has Nokia added any more features to it??
hey varun.. nice review.. this phone has actually caught my eye (i dont like nokia much :D).. i’m sure you hav seen the features of the xperia by now.. how wud u compare this one with that?
@narayan
you still have that k750i
i know ur a die hard sony fan ..
experia looks much more powerul compared to this phone.
it would also come at almost 1.5 times the price of this one
need to do some research on the xperia
ur review on E71 is very nice and simple for the beginners. pls compare E71 with Sony Ericsson’s P1i. looking at E71’s connectivity options and look i am tempted to go for nokia E71. i am using P1i at present and no issues with it except VOIP calls over GPRS mode. but voip works well with wifi mode.both P1i and E71 have got good battery life but p1i lacks EDGE.P1i camera and sound quality are very good for a business phone. P1i never hangs and never restarts even if u open 10 or more applications at a time.i have been using P1i for the past 1yr and only on 3-4 occasions it restarted.
pls do tell me how does E71 perform when u open many applications. pls do some research on it and let me know so that i can go for E71 by selling my P1i. pls compare and give me feed back. love u fonearena for the review and for all latest news.
thanks a lot.
I read about E71 but it is not been compared with any existing phone of any other brand. i want to know whether it is better than nokia E90 or not.
@Lokesh Kochar - See E71 and E90 are two different phones that target different strata of the market. Even if you compare them E90 will win as it is a enterprise functionality heavy phone and will beat E71 in all aspects. Also it is very much costly than E71. E71 will beat E90 if you copmpare their ergonomics, shape, slim form factor. I have used E90 for a while and beleive me the phone is one hell of a enterprise monster, the only drawback of the phone is that it is pretty costly and heavy. Let me know if you have any queries.
Pls compare SE p1i with E71 and review them properly as both of them are business phones. Hope u r hearing to my request.
@raj - Hey raj, agreed that the P1i and the E71 are business phones but they cannot be compared because p1i was launched before the E71 and E71 outperforms p1i in many departments incluidng,
Robust mobile OS
Resolution
Connectivity options,
inbuilt camera
Internet Browser
PC connectivity
Well it was a nice review and would definitely help me to go for the device but one thing I would definitely like to know is how is the music playback / calling on the earphones…….??
is it same as N series or below par…….??
Regds,
Hi,
Thanks for the Review & Comments, which definetly will help me in grabing a business phone. Can you please compare Nokia E 71 with any Blackberry business phone of around 20000/-
Any chance of using blackberry on E71 and how to use fit to screen while browsing.
The E71 sadly does not offer Blackberry support.
The Blackberry connect application is missing .
you can use the zoom controls to reduce the page to fit to your screen.
thanks varun..
where can I find softwares for Nokia E71
Also some guides to use it
All your reviews are good, but I purachsed this phone in this month only & it’s getting hang frequently. That’s a major drawback. Just wanted to you, do you people are also experincing the same????
i have purchased the E71 but till date i am mot able to connect to to my e-mail as it says packet data not available or packet data connection error…
@Alok
what softwares did u install ?
Also what firmware of the phone do you have ?
you can find it by dialing *#0000# on the homescreen
@Rajimonly,
have you configured an internet connection on the phone - gprs or wlan ?
Good review but if it does not come with blackberry connect., it is of no use to me.
I like to buy this phone I just like it, but i doubt whether it is capable of editing word! in its quick office like other phones which are useing windows mobile OS.
All your reviews are good, but I purachsed this phone in this month only & it’s getting hang frequently. That’s a major drawback. Just wanted to you, do you people are also experincing the same????

@shaswat

@bhavesh parab
E61i production is stopped i guess. But plenty of those phones are in market still
@Asif
The browser supports popups and ajax . No java applets
@isha
You cant use skype to make calls. you can do only text chat using the skype mobile application
But there are application like nimbuzz and fring which lets you make calls via wifi and gprs
I purchased E71 from Dt. 18/1/2009.

I am facing these under mentioned problems in this Unit from day One and for these Problems they had REPLACED the NEW Unit but the symptoms and problems are same:
Problem 1. When I use GPS feature & go to GLOBE this unit got HANGED. I was told that GPRS is not activated so this is getting Hanged. After Installing GPRS in my Phone the problem was same. Then they replaced the unit on 19/1/2009.
Problem 2. In this NEW replaced Unit when I go to SMS to LISTEN the Text Massage this start getting HANGED! It got hanged aprox. 8 times in one day. Not only this if I open any Games in this then also this got Hanged!.
Solution Advised: sales persons told me that the unit Software Version is not updated (this was having V100) they Updated the Version by 200 (not known exactly) and assured this will not get Hanged again.
But yesterday it again got hanged. I took it to showroom and then they advised me to remove the DATA Card and see.
Unfortunately today morning when I open my phone I found it Hanged (after DATA Card removed). Might have happen during sometime in the Night.
Nokia says - bring it to customer care we will repair it - Who wants a Rs. 20000.00 new phone (3 days old) repaired?
Why not Nokia does some thing for this???
This new phone has become a riddle for me
Here is the reply of NOKIA for my complaint :
I ask Mr. Bibhu Chandan Dey, if this would have happen to his Rs. 20000.00 phone, for sure he would not have taken it to Service center for further R&Ds. How COOLLY he is advising me this? STRANGE

Hi Varun,
It’s the first time I’m coming to this forum and indeed I am surprised with the quality of the comments and your answers.
Many (many) years ago i started with Nokia untill i was moving to Sony Ericsson, where i have done the whole “family”, P800,P900 and since more than one year the P1i. I do like this phone, because it works very well, has a very good support by phone in Portuguese,and after installing the program StyleTap,
i could download a lot of programs from Palm, namely advanced astronomy,and medecine of wich i am fan.
Because the Symbiam(mostly the UIQ 3.0) will probably be taken out of the market and also because there is a time for everything, i am thinking, quietly, to change phone. i am not very enthusiastic about the Xperia X1, but i am thinking in returning to Nokia with the E71 or follow another way and trying the Blackberry Bold. With your enormeous experience and sensibility, what is your advice ??? Tks.in advance.
@jcamposlisgolfe
Welcome aboard ,
Xperia is a great phone , But now perfect . Its one of Sony’s first Windows Mobile Phones after they ditched UIQ
Coming to E71 , Its Nokia’s most popular phone currently and its a great mix of design , usability and features.
Blackberry Bold is primarily an Emailing Device compared to the Business phone aspect of E71 .
If Email is very critical for you,then Blackberry - Else E71, Emailing works but not as good as Blackberry and e51 was one of the last phones to support blackberry connect and e71 lacks it ..
Hope this helps !

Tks. i presume u want to say “not” instead of “now”, for the Xperia !! It makes a difference.
No, indeed email it’s not critical, thus E71. Any other suggestion to leave the P1i ?? What about the expected Palm Pre ?? Palm has a fantastic array of very good programs!
Comments,please and tks.again.
Sorry, but pls. include also in your thoughts the G1 !!
Hi Varun,
Being “welcome aboard”, I thought I was entitled to an answer, even if it is “have a walk” !!!!!
Shall I wait for comments or just forget about????
Jose
Hi jcamposlisgolfe,
Sorry was a bit occupied .
G1 is not a perfect device since its first phone built on a entirely new platform.
Unless you are a phone collector , I wont recommend the G1
Emailing is sluggish on the G1 . I love the Emailing on iPhone, simply superb . except for search
Palm Pre has been announced and its built on the WebOS platform which is also new. Lots of promising features ..
Looking forward in buying E71, what do you suggest.
How much will this cost any idea in Delhi
Hi ,
Good 1 . liked the review & the way you have taken through the specifications .
Would like to know if this device supports corporate mails supported by black berry . I bought a HTC & it supports only personal mails with po etc . My corp mail doesnt work in HTC . Pls clarify . U can write to me on vijeshnshenoy@gmail.com
Tnx - Vijesh .
Please suggest i want to puchase Nokia Mobile, but i am quit

Hi Varun.
This is a nice review, but since you’ve mentioned that you’ve installed Gmail App on your E71, could you please share some more details, or probably share some screen snapshots on the Gmail captured form E71?
I’m thinking about buying Nokia E71 and now the only thing I’m still not sure about before I actually go for it is:- How does Gmail(For Mobile) CLIENT App looks on E71?
I used to be using BlackBerry 8310 on which the Gmail Client App looks amazing, especially the fact that the font size is small enough(I like it to be small :)) to reflect high resolution of the screen(so there could be up to 8 or 9 words each line, which is cool for a Mobile Device).
But for NokiaE71, I’m not sure because all I can see(from all the pictures I googled) is that the font size on E71 is too big(although it has a 240*320 Resolution which is the same as BlackBerry Curve)
Hi,
Please let me know which windows nokia phone is compatable with SKYPE software ?
Hi
kinda repetition of what rajimonly reported earlier. I have configured my E71 in every which way (website/sms/bloghelps) but its not working. Seems I am making a basic mistake. Message being displayed is ” packet data not available, check network services”. Checked with BSNL, according to them my connection was made through 10 days back.
Any suggestions?
@rajimonly: Could you get it done? How?
@Leon
check out the video of Gmail App on E71
