The opportunities for VAS services are growing in India. Reliance Communication recently sponsored a seminar called “Opportunities for mobile VAS in Rural India.” The 4 participants in this seminar represented telecom service providers and rural application providers. The discussion gave some insights like, though mobile phones are penetrating in Indian villages and users are willing to pay fort; the key that will define their future is, how much local content is provided as a part of the value added service. The Head of VAS, Reliance communication, put this point forward. After reading all this I was wondering how much these people are worried about the people in rural areas. The Head of VAS, Reliance is adamant on bringing local content to farmers, Oscar Fernandes said that farmers should get mobile phones in 500 bucks. These initiatives will make the life of farmers easy, but there are instances where there are mobiles but no electricity to charge them, I feel contrast situations like these will certainly have a negative impact on these initiatives.
