Google Maps for Android update replaces direction arrow in favor of blue beam

In a bid to make it easier for users to find directions, Google has updated Maps for Android with a small tweak. Maps will no show your current location with a blue beam.

Prior to the update, Maps use to show your current location with an arrow that was present in front of the blue dot. Google says the removal of direction arrow will result in easier orientation. The new blue beam tells you how accurate is your phone’s direction. The narrower the beam, the more accurate the direction while a wider beam means that your phone’s compass is temporarily uncalibrated.

In order to bring the blue beam on track you can simply move your phone in a figure 8 motion a few times. You can do this calibration at point of time and not just when a notification from the app prompts you. Currently users have to tilt their phones around for correct calibration.
