India Ranks No.2 In Mobile Internet Usage

on April 4, 2010 – 10:02 am23 Comments

According to a recent report by Google, India has emerged as the second largest consumer of mobile Internet, after the US. India has accounted only for 5.9% out of the 14 million webpages viewed in February while the US has accounted for more than 50% of webpages viewed in February.

The report shows the statistics of only those countries where Google has a strong mobile advertising network and they might have not included the Chinese market since Google is having some issues with the Chinese government from the last few months.

“The number of mobile internet users has grown nearly five times in the last five years. In fact the number of new data connections added globally this year will be higher on the mobile than on the PC,” says Vinay Goel, Google India product head.

According to Mr. Vinay Goel, out of the 500 million mobile phone users in India, around 25 million users have paid for their data accounts while 55-65 million users currently use the free data services provided by the wireless operator. He believes that the number of users with data services will reach around 100 million by the end of this year.

Most of the Indians use low-end handset to access the web from their mobile phones. Nokia 5130 Express Music and Nokia 3110c were the top two handsets used by the Indians. On the other hand, iPhone was found to be the most used device in the world accounting for around 40% of web pages viewed during February.

In the last few months, it has been seen that iPhone is losing its market share to Android devices. Currently, Motorola Droid, HTC Dream and Apple iPhone are the most popular device in the US.

We would like to know, which handset you are currently using to access the web. Please let us know your views in the comments.

What about Japan? There are as many mobile sites on NTT DoCoMo’s iMode portal than there are on AdMob’s entire global network, and that’s just a tiny fraction of the mobile sites in Japan.
All these figures show is that AdMob global coverage is unbalanced (nearly half of its business is in the states) i.e. the sites that take adverts from its network are more interesting to US users or Indian users. Figures from a different ad network e.g. BuzzCity would say something entirely different. It might be that mobile Internet usage in the US or India is higher than Japan – though it would be surprising, despite the much bigger populations – but AdMob really isn’t the best outfit to tell you that.
