Mobile data traffic soars 74% in India in 2014: Study


India as recorded 74% rise in mobile data traffic in 2014, according to a latest study from Nokia Networks. The study said that both 2G and 3G mobile broadband services were responsible for the rise.

The Nokia Networks MBit Index report revealed that 3G data traffic in India grew 114 percent while 2G data traffic in the country increased 41 percent in 2014, while the 2G data traffic growth was reported to be 41%. According to the study, 3G data consumption was 52 per cent of the total data consumption in December 2014 as against 42 per cent in January 2014.

3G data consumption surpassed 2G use across India during September 2014.   On an average, 3G data increased 29 percent to 688 MB per month in 2014. On the other hand, 2G data increased by 48 percent to 216 MB per month during the same period. The report further added that 3G users consumed 3.2 times more data than 2G users in 2014, as per the study.

“A surge in 3G and 4G compatible smartphone use underlines the greater need for operators to expand the 3G network coverage and selectively rollout 4G services for higher speeds across all the circles while modernizing the existing 2G networks.”

said Sandeep Girotra, vice president and head of India region.

Moving on the report stated that 4G in India is in the nascent stage, the country already has 5.5 million 4G capable devices but only about 85,000 subscribers are active long-term evolution (LTE) users. Giving insights about 3G and 4G users the report said that, India has about 130 million active 3G capable devices while there are only 5.5 million 4G devices out of which only about 85000 are active LTE subscribers.
