Mobile Web Server

Hi all,

Nokia Series 60 comes up with applications that simply amaze your imagination. It goes alike for applications that are released and those that are coming into existence quite soon.
The best place to find those which are coming is probably Nokia Beta Labs with an equally imaginative tag line – Shaping the future together.

Two great applications available for use are Mobile Web Server and Nokia Map Loader. While Mobile Web Server has been available for a while now, Map Loader has just been released.

I have been using Mobile Web Server for sometime, and can tell its a truly innovative application. A simple download, and an account does the trick. Oh yeah, you do need a GPRS/EDGE/3G/Wifi connection to make this work. Being totally dependent on the network, it might not be possible to make use of all the features but surely few of them can come very handy.

All the relevant information is available at Mobile Web Server site. An account is at the site and you are assigned your own address like http://yourname.mymobilesite.net

The download is available for Series 60 Nokia phones and is a Symbian download. I would recommend doing the download on the PC first and then transferring the application to the mobile through bluetooth or cable. Its around 3.8 MB on my Nokia E51.

How it Works:

Start the web server on the phone and login to your account on the web. Now your phone acts as a server, and the client (a web browser) can access all the information about the phone. This includes Phone Contacts, Calendar, Messages, Call Logs, Phone information (like battery level), Gallery to view all the Phone and Memory Card images. You can even control the camera of the phone with the web browser and click pictures. These are available immediately on the web.

It comes of great use when you forget the phone at home and need important phone numbers or need to read messages. You can even use it to transfer images to the PC without having to go through the hassle of a bluetooth connection or phone USB cable.

This is not the end of it. What is really cool is that you can set up guest accounts at different levels. All the friends and family can just log on to the internet site and see shared files! They can view pictures that you want to show them, share information on your phone including documents etc.

There is another feature of Blogs and Guestbook to directly publish your content on the website.

The phone client gives you access rights to the Users who are connected, the total statistics of data that has been flowing in and out of your mobile, setting access permissions, starting and stopping the server, and the facility to restart counter for web server.

And once you are done and don’t want to share anything, just Stop the server. Anybody going to your site sees your customized offline page.

All the information, including downloads and screenshots are available at Nokia Beta Labs website.

So start enjoying this great new application!
