Good news from Blackberry maker RIM today as they announced higher than expected revenue for the quarter ended November 2009. They have sold 10 million Blackberries in one single quarter which is amazing considering the economic climate. What recession ?  Their revenue was up 11%  over the last quarter and 41% over the same quarter last year !

Although Blackberry phones are sold mostly with a BIS service , they are also sold unlocked. BB is clearly having handsets at various price points. The 8520 sold like hot cakes according to our sources.

Although RIM has earned its reputation for making Email Centric handsets looks like their efforts to transform into a Smartphone maker are paying off.

Some interesting points from the quarter results

  • The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 82% for devices, 14% for service, 2% for software and 2% for other revenue.
  • RIM shipped approximately 10.1 million devices, including its 75 millionth BlackBerry smartphone.
  • 4.4 million net new BlackBerry subscribers were added in the quarter.
  • Total BlackBerry subscriber base  is approximately 36 million.
